Justice Delayed: The Unresolved Case of David Josiah Lawson’s Tragic Death Seven Years Ago Today

Kyle Zoellner and David Josiah Lawson: One was badly beaten and one died seven years ago today.
Seven years after the tragic death of Humboldt State University student David Josiah Lawson, his family continues to seek justice and closure in a case marked by controversy and frustration. Lawson, a black student at what is now Cal Poly Humboldt, was fatally stabbed at a house party near campus on April 15, 2017, sparking a lengthy and complex investigation.
Despite the presence of DNA evidence linking a bloody knife to both Lawson and the original suspect arrested at the scene, Kyle Zoellner, no prosecution has been secured in Lawson’s homicide.
The lack of resolution after seven years underscores the challenges and delays in the legal process, leaving the Lawson family and the community at large grappling with unanswered questions and unresolved grief. Reaching out to Lawson on the eve of the memorial anniversary of her family’s untimely loss, the mother of three expressed optimism and passion for her family’s ongoing pursuit of justice.
“I am doing my 5k Run for justice for my beloved son, DJ,” Charmaine Lawson says in a video she forwarded to us. As she jogged in place over 300 miles from Arcata, Charmaine Lawson set the camera-phone down to film a quick message to Humboldt County supporters on the eve of the 7th annual memorial date of her son’s tragic 2017 death in Humboldt County.
As if running towards a verdict itself, Lawson told the camera, “I’m halfway there. So I’m almost done, but I just wanted to give a quick update. I’m doing it DJ! Mommy’s doing everything in her power to make sure you get justice and justice is served for you.” She shifted her focus to the prosecution in the case.. Channeling her energy toward the future, with conviction, Lawson said to the camera, “Evil will never win, And love never die. Justice is coming, baby, [I am] never giving up. Never giving up. You know who you are. We’re coming for you. We’re coming for you!
Before returning to a full jogging pace, Lawson added, “It’s never, never never, never going to end until we get justice. All right. I’ll see you all at the finish line.”
Charmaine Lawson, David’s mother, says she remains steadfast in her pursuit of justice. She continues to advocate for transparency in local government and policing, accountability of public elected officials, and a commitment to solving her son’s homicide, emphasizing the need for integrity and thoroughness throughout the investigations of the past seven years.
The Arcata Police Department say they remain dedicated to pursuing justice in this open murder case, actively following leads and encouraging witnesses to come forward.
In a recent press release, the Arcata Police Department emphasized the importance of witness accounts in advancing the investigation. With the passage of time, investigators hope that individuals who may have been hesitant to provide information in the past will now be willing to share crucial details that could help bring the case to a resolution. Investigators insist that eyewitness testimonies regarding the events leading up to and including Lawson’s murder are particularly vital in moving the case forward- despite the existing bloody knife and related DNA evidence in the case- which has not been deemed conclusive by investigators, and is simply not enough evidence to bring the case to a close, according to previous statments by the Humboldt County DA.
The full public advisory from APD reads as follows:
“On April 15, 2017, seven years ago this week, Humboldt State University sophomore student David Josiah Lawson was stabbed to death while attending a house party on Spear Avenue in Arcata. The Arcata Police Department continues to investigate this open murder case. Investigators continue to actively pursue leads and a 24-hour tip line remains open whereby information from confidential sources can be provided to APD investigators.
Witness accounts are essential to moving this case forward either by corroborating known information or in the development of new leads. Investigators are hopeful, that with the passage of time, witnesses that might have been reluctant in the past, might be willing to come forward now. It is imperative that those witnesses contact investigators to move this case forward.
Anyone with information regarding the murder of Josiah Lawson is asked to call the Arcata Police Department’s confidential tip line at (707) 825-2590 or APD Dispatch at (707) 822-2424. Eyewitness accounts of what led up to, and including the murder of Josiah are crucial to bringing this case back to court.”
For additional information, community members are advised to contact Lieutenant Todd Dokweiler or the Arcata Police Department, at (707) 822-2428 regarding Case #17-1302.

The new mural honoring the life of David Josiah Lawson was unveiled by the Arcata High School’s Black Student Union (BSU)
Multiple fist images in a mural honoring the life of a person who died in an unnecessary fight?
And with “love” superimposed over a large fist coming at you dominating the mural it’s hard to see how this honors the life of the deceased.
He was a true warrior! He went down fighting!…over a cell phone…
Right up there with St. George Floyd, a criminal drug addict, scumbag who held a gun to a pregnant women’s stomach, martyred after a drug overdose, blamed on the usual scapegoat, the evil evil white man.
I wonder if the dead man is the man who started the fight? Was he also the aggressor? The kid above looks like somebody was trying to kill him, was this self defense? Seems so…
City guys think they can come up here to go to college and just beat out local students and youth up.
If it was self defense then the mom needs to let her son rest in peace. Enuff poop slinging!
He was a student there and not just a city kid. Someone life was taken. whether he was the aggressor or started a fight. Why was the other kid there with a knife? What is the kid afraid of, it is a college party.
“The Black Student Union club at Arcata High is made up of six members. They hope their artistic efforts inspire other BSU or multicultural clubs to create meaningful and similar actions.
“I think it’s really important that the community shows up tonight,” said Shannon Kresge, the BSU club advisor. “It’s a big party. We want to celebrate the kids and celebrate the message. We want Charmaine to feel like we didn’t forget about that and the justice part of that component is really important.”
Charmaine expressed to me that a bigger mural dedicated to her son will be painted soon on D Street in Arcata. Arcata High School is also currently painting another mural with a broader representation. This second mural is an effort to represent the Black, Latinx, Asian and Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and the Jewish student body.”
https://kiem-tv.com/2024/04/10/spreading-love-and-joy-is-the-goal-of-the-black-student-union-club-at-arcata-high-mural-reveal/
Have we not arrived at the point where the participation award is no longer news?
“This second mural is an effort to represent the Black, Latinx, Asian and Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and the Jewish student body.”
In other words, everbody but white people.Liberal whites will be the first idiots to support this racism while they call you racist.Yawn.
“Black Student Union” sounds very exclusionary… is it also discriminatory? Are kids of other ethnicities allowed to join?
If not, why are race based, racist and discriminatory clubs allowed to operate in our schools, this is nothing more than a gang in my honest opinion
Only question is whether it is a criminal gang, this gangs legality is in question!
Is there also a White Student Union and a Latino Student Union?
Real Questions.
Too bad this young kid got killed and justice hasn’t been served. This article gives no indication of what actually led up to this tragic event, however the one boy who was acquired looks like he got beat up by a gang.
Unions like this was made because an entire school is based on discriminatory for other ethnic groups except for one. So that is why these groups even exist. Then people come and called them gangs. How is something positive always associated with something negative when race or even more the black race is involved.
Color of Skin used ONLY for the purposes to describe the scene;
White kid getting whomped on by black kid who was beating him to death, somebody ( we don’t know) who saved the white kid from getting beaten to death, by stabbing the perpetrator.
Sounds like self defense of one or another. End of story.
Could have been black or white or brown or yellow; it does not matter.
Josiah’s “Brothers” tried to ice Kyle and missed. They ended up skewering their buddy. Darn.
Sounds exactly right! City Punks
Given that none of the dozens of witnesses present will say anything this is the most likely reason no one has come forward to tell the truth. We’ll never know until one of them comes forward, but since many of them interfered with the first responders that’s not likely to happen. Only the people who were there know.
Fists and love all in 1mural.
How loving.
Our schools condone this crap?
The teachers are either raacists or moral cowards.
“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury signifying nothing.” Less than 60% of violent crime is ever solved. Give it a rest.
Agree. Given the chaotic events of the night and the conflicting testimony and motives of the witnesses, short of a confession, this case will never be solved.
Gotta love Shakespeare.
I wonder what percentage of violent crime was solved in Shakespeare’s day?
I guess it would depend on the competency of the Shire Reeve.
You ever had a dream you really thought was real?
??
The case looks like self defense or defense of another whose life was in jeopardy. She should have raised her son to not engage in violence.
[edit] If you don’t have nothing nice, positive, or impactful to say, don’t say shit at all. Would you say this if he was your white nephew?
Regretfully, as yours was the comment I agreed with the most, I had to edit it for breaking the rules.
You agree with the one comment trying to race bait?
With all do respect , not to insult the ruler… What is the fear if there was no “rules”?
What if everyone was left to speak freely?
I don’t understand what your fear is Kym?
Everyone is grown up here, does the community really need a rule book and a yard duty to correct us and moderate us… The posts left unmoderated get way more comments, and then you moderate them…. Why is this so important to you Kym?
We all get it dude. Your feelers were hurt cause you got put on moderation. So you come here and badger kym, smooth move.
Dont you have anything better to do?
Actually she does this to a lot of people especially if it doesn’t fit her narrative. I have posted things and it was taken down with no explanation and saw a comment way worse allowed after mine taken down. It’s cause we went against her and her narrative and to be honest I think it’s rude. I have added li is to my things but because it wasn’t what fit the comments it didn’t get posted.
I’ve been edited, deleted, placed on moderation. Never once did I cry about it. Her site, her rules.
With the numerous commenters who come here posting dozens of comments daily, trying to push an agenda, while trying blatantly to flout the rules, I’m surprised that more comments dont get deleted
Well, it is her blog……
She has a community responsibility and responsibility as a journalist to encourage community involvement and free speech.
Yeah that’s happened to me also a couple times. But After being pissed I’ve come to realize and respect that Kym is not perfect…and it will happen occasionally, nothing to cry victim over. It is her blog, the rules are hers, she may interpret her own rules differently at different times…because she is a human! I appreciate that she allows much ore latitude than any other site I’ve seen and since this neck of the woods has some very interesting perspectives it has allowed much animated wordplay and some back and forth not seen elsewhere….
Farce, I try to be consistent and follow the rules I’ve set up but I am trying to make snap decisions about King Solomon like differences. It is hard to be perfect. I appreciate your understanding and I appreciate that you note what should be obvious to others—that my rules are minimal.
Opinions from across the spectrum are welcome. Commenters are rarely banned for a single comment–though there have been a few, the guy who advocated raping someone at gunpoint comes to mind.
Breaking the few rules I’ve set up over and over as some commenters do though is exhausting and I just don’t have the bandwidth to deal.
The rules state commenters can’t advocate violence. Without quoting the one comment that you had taken down exactly (you didn’t use the same name so I don’t want to out you), you clearly advocated beating someone for theft. I don’t allow that.
I have seen many comments with the same thing and they were never edited or taken down. One was most recently on the post about the war in Israel.
I even posted a link on that post and it was never posted. It didn’t have anything rude it was about what is really going on.
If I missed one that breaks the rule, please bring it to my attention by replying to the comment with my name.
So go elsewhere.
If it’s ok for one person to do it it’s ok for all to do it. Don’t pick and choose.
Given the amount of incredibly inflammatory hate speech posted here that I personally do not think should be ok to post for others to read and create an echo chamber of hateful stupidity…
I have a lot of respect for Kim sticking to her rules on a much different level than most news blogs allow.
If you’re against hateful stupidity, do you condemn the pathetic attempt of Ryan Hutson to equate “justice” with convicting someone without evidence, simply because of the races of the dead person and the former suspect? (We can’t refer to a “victim” because we don’t know if the dead person was engaging in an assault at the time he was stabbed). Your problem is that you object to anything that is not your own echo chamber.
It’s obvious that this blog practices in Cancel Culture.
If the ruler doesn’t like what we say, it is deemed as hate speech… our post and opinion is canceled, if we continue to speak our mind we are threatened with being permanently canceled; banned.
This is what is happening on this blog.

That comment was both positive and impactful. The truth isn’t always nice. Sorry you can’t deal with reality. Liberalism is a mental disorder!
This spew coming from somebody with your moniker? What a joke.
Hey- don’t be scolding his mom! That’s cold. She lost her son and has every right to grieve and seek answers. I don’t agree with much of the way the situation is represented but it’s only basic decency to leave his mom out of any criticism. Have some decency and some respect, please.
To be fair she has made unfounded accusations that the people of our county are racists.
We are.
I’m not. Speak for yourself.
Real hard to raise anyone not to engage in violence. We’re surrounded by violence both real and imagined almost from birth. Video games, movies, the news is primarily about violence because that’s what sells copy. Most RHBB articles are about violent crime and crashes. (This is not a criticism, Kym).
Truth points to being stabbed by your friend on accident. Step up, take responsibility for your actions or remain silent like a coward. Your choice you’ve got to live with.
Is there a white students union? Just wondering…..
That would be considered racist, same as All Lives Matter is. Do better!
So if I understand correctly the person who stabbed this young man is free to roam the streets?
They have dna evidence but that isn’t enough? I cry b.s on this. If the young man’s dna is on the knife then he had possession of it. So that is enough to charge someone for murder. Is the young man related to someone in the judicial system by chance or maybe even a prominent business owner.
No to all of the above. Most murders do not result in a conviction. Because of the presumption of innocence in the judicial system, proving something in the theater that is a court room is hard. If this case had proceeded with all the uncertainties in evidence, the assumed killer would have been acquitted. And no second jeopardy rule would have made it final. Delay was the only reasonable course so that the possibility of a conviction is still there.
Usually that means forgotten too. The reason for it to be on this site now is not that it is unusual. It’s because it checks all the boxes of the agendas on race in this verynlittle corner of the world.
Well I do know that they can take it before a grand jury and let them say yes or no if it should go forward. But then the witnesses would have to want to cooperate in it. And it seems they don’t want to cooperate at all. I could be wrong.
But I get what you’re saying.
You obviously know nothing about the disposition of the case. It did go before a grand jury, which considered all the evidence presented for review to the California Department of Justice, per the demands of the so-called “Justice for Josiah” movement. The demands of the movement for State review of the case were met and the case was dropped. The original case was based on an investigation derailed within the first hour by a mob and provably lying witnesses. Not proven lying, as the techniques used to ferret out lying witnesses were not used by APD, which rendered the rest of their investigation useless.
It is possible to get beaten and be bleeding profusely and have your blood/DNA get on objects that you never handled or wielded.
Yes and no. The victim was stabbed and the knife used to stab him had his and the stabbers blood in it. That I think doesn’t fit in this instance. Sorry I could be wrong but I don’t think so.
By looking at the victim who got beaten up, it looks like his blood would have been on the person who beat him, blood could have easily een transferred from the victim to the aggressor Josiah.
The young man whose DNA was also found on the knife (Kyle zoelner) was very bloody from getting his ass whooped prior to any stabbing, so the presence of his DNA all over the scene isn’t proof of anything other than that he was bleeding at the scene of the stabbing.
It says his dna was on the knife used to stab the victim. So unless someone rubbed a knife on him and then stabbed someone I say he did it. Kinda like the game clue. Put the pieces together.
Get a clue.
If you’ve ever had a facial laceration, let alone the many facial lacerations evident in Mr zoelner’s booking photo, you would know that they dump blood at an astonishing rate.
Based on the timeline that’s been released to the public it’s fully probable that any person could have stabbed Josiah and gotten both his and Kyle’s DNA on the knife
CSI.
Any halfway decent defense lawyer would tear you a new one. And I would support it. Also he was charged with murder. This is the murkiest of cases and to just feed someone to the wolves is not in line with the way our criminal justice system is supposed to operate.
He was bleeding from a severe beating so his DNA could be on the knife even if he was not the person who stabbed JL.
Oh jeez. And what law school did you attend? Sometimes it’s a good thing to know enough to know what you don’t know. ?♀️
I don’t know anyone involved; but I do know a lynch mob being formed. Look up the story of the Grayson County Texas Courthouse being burned down.
Zoellner is innocent until proven guilty. And the police could not build a case that would hold up in court or he would have been tried.
Lawson’s “friends” refused to cooperate with the cops. I think one of them may have stabbed David by mistake as they were piling on the unattractive white guy.
Opinions don’t count, though, and, like assh0les, they have a variety of unpleasant odors.
The family should be blaming the “witnesses” who refused to give evidence that night.
And stop spreading racism in Humboldt County. It does not help David’s legacy to drench it in hate.
Did they ever scrub Josiah’s Facebook page? It was full of violent, racist material which was posted and promoted by Josiah himself. Sickening stuff. I can’t believe the mother is still milking this tragedy. And I can’t believe racists in this community are still egging her on. Pathetic.
More race baiting crap.
Yea it to bad he died but I see no racial motovation for this. More race baiting and another chip out of the log to sew hate and anger between groups of people in this case racial groups.
Does anyone remember in 2020 or so, someone said there was a new bit of evidence? Wonder what came of that?
It’s sad, to me, to read this comment section 7 years on.
This was a senseless death. A sort of petty death that happens in any setting where young men are left to their own devices. Maybe it happens more these days, I dungy know. The data doesn’t back that up.
Ms Lawson hasn’t been the best advocate for her cause in the broader community up here, with her insistence that her sons crime is uniquely unsolved thanks to local racism. But comment sections like this one don’t do anything to discredit her perspective.
It’s sad, to me, seeing the ignorance and childish defensiveness that is so often deployed to lampoon or community, on film display anytime this case is mentioned.
Mr Lawson made some stupid choices the night he died, not terribly creative stupid choices for a 20 year old. The young men and women around him made similarly stupid choices. A choice that one of them made surpassed all the youthful idiocy in offer that night and changed a lot of people’s lives while ending one.
The only closure that will ever come from outside is if that person who made that most impactful choice decides to make a different choice and come forward.
I would love for our community to rise above the ignorant race debates and move on from this case. Most of the relevant parties have likely left the area, as the college kids do. Ms Lawson will likely have many more years of grief. We can empathize with her pain without empowering the race aspect. Her son died. APD fucked the initial contact and investigation up properly. That local police mistake will probably cost her a lifetime of closure. I hope she can find peace for herself.
I agree with your overall sentiment. People do not like unwarranted accusations of racism, so I find the comments to be understandable. They neither discredit or lend credence to her accusations imo.
Lacking any shortcomings of local law enforcement, I’m not sure that a self defense verdict would have provided her a greater sense of closure or not. It seems that would had been the verdict if KZ had been charged.
Given the chaos that evening and the conflicting testimony and motives of the witnesses, APD could have done everything right and the case would still be unsolved. Unless the stabber confesses that won’t change.
This is so sad and disheartening to read. Mothers should not have to bury their child, and fight or not, bringing and using a weapon which inflicts deadly force is unacceptable. I wonder how people can leave such hurtful comments and not consider being young themselves and all of the things that you naturally get into and experience. Unfortunately for Josiah, he no longer has the possibility to experience these things with his friends and family. Color or not, to be murdered while going to a party is not okay.
Everyone has sweet plans this year to gather with their families for the holidays and his mom has the void of him not being there, and yet this is becoming a race thing. Why is that we may ask? Because race does matter, and it does impact people’s experiences. Why are there clubs for people of color some may wonder. It is because people of color are the minority. Could you imagine living somewhere where only 1 out of 10 people looked like you? Or even less? If not, that is how far the impact of your lived experiences can carry you. Being White actually does carry priviledge, and in this case in particular, we can see why.
If this situation went down differently then the community would be responding and reacting very differently, and with the upcoming election this week, I am concerned that the ADP not acting on the evidence they have will be showing people that killing others is an acceptable behavior, and this to me is sad.
I do hope that this case is resolved, and that Humboldt county can stand united against hate as a collective.
The photo choice is less than tasteful, but people’s lack of care and disregard towards human life is even more sad. It is sad that kids are raised in a society that teaches you to teach others a lesson instead of talking it out, and it’s sad that this mother will no longer have an opportunity to hug her son for the holidays.
Finally, not all Black people are in Gangs. The stereotyping really needs to end. ADP, we are all watching how you handle this case.
My mother Jennifer and i just watched the show aired on Tubi regarding this and really think this is very heartbreaking for the black community and for the Humboldt county as well. This is not a case of who did it. We know who did it. We have seen cases with less evidenced convict black men before. Where is the justice for this young man and this young mans family. For the killer why is he allowed to have a future when he took away Josiah right to one. I blame the killer for his actions and the county and court system for the actions that follow after that fatal night at that party. #justiceforJosiah.
