City of Eureka Accepting Nominations for Mayor and City Council July 13 – August 7

city of eureka logoThe City of Eureka announces that the nomination period for candidates interested in serving as Mayor or on the City Council for Wards 1, 3, and 5 will open Monday, July 13, 2026, and close Friday, August 7, 2026.
The Mayor and City Council play a vital role in shaping the future of Eureka by developing city policies, approving ordinances and resolutions, making land-use decisions, and hearing appeals on decisions made by City commissions and committees. Additionally, elected officials represent the City as liaisons to various regional boards, commissions, and Joint Powers Authorities (JPAs), while also attending community functions and events throughout the year.
The Mayor receives a monthly salary of $625 and must be at least 26 years of age and a registered voter of the City of Eureka.
City Councilmembers receive a monthly salary of $500 and must be a registered voter who reside within the ward they seek to represent.
Serving on the City Council provides a rewarding opportunity to help shape the future of Eureka. Councilmembers come from all walks of life and share a common commitment to representing and serving the community.
Individuals interested in running for office are encouraged to contact the City Clerk’s Office regarding nomination requirements, filing procedures, and election information.

It is simply one of the many arbitrary minimum age limits we set and yet we refuse to set a maximum age limit for politicians so folks with clearly diminished capacity aren’t the ones setting policy.
