The Knob Fire Pushed to the North Expanding About 600 Acres in the Last Day

Over the last 24 hours, the Knob Fire grew mainly to the north though it did push a bit to the west as seen in heat mapping done last night which clarified that the fire had moved more than we believed yesterday.

The fire grew about 600 acres in the last 24 hours. According to the Northern California Geographic Coordination Center, the fire is now 2,798 and still 52% contained.

Flames threaten a number of structures and multiple areas are still under evacuation orders and warnings (See Evacuation information below).

Hwy 299 is open to controlled traffic but subject to long delays (See Roads below).

We’ve gathered the most important information about the Knob Fire and organized it below for our readers.

Stats:

 209 personnel, 7 hand crews, 18 engines, 1 dozer, 2 water tenders.

The Plan/Information:

  • The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department held a Question and Answer session yesterday. Below is the video.

The Weather:

According to the National Weather Service, “Widespread smoke after 11pm. Cloudy, with a low around 51. North northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening.”

The Roads:

According to Caltrans,

State Route 299 is reduced to one lane with escorted traffic control from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every 1.5 hours, Monday – Friday, from Mill Camp Rd in Burnt Ranch to approximately 3 miles east of Big Bar, due to the Monument Fire and Rock Slide. Between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. only residents, with proof of residency, and emergency personnel will be allowed within the closure. LABOR DAY WEEKEND (Saturday 9/4 – Monday 9/6) Traffic openings will be at the top of every hour between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Traffic must remain in line at these times to be escorted through fire area. A detour is not available, motorist should expect delay

The following road closures are in effect related to the Knob Fire: China Creek Road at Hodgson Road; Burwood Drive; Gypo Lane; Friday Ridge Road; Butterfly Creek Road.

Evacuation and Help Information:

  • The Evacuation Center is at the Seventh Day Adventist Church 1200 Central Ave, McKinleyville, CA. And another is at First Baptist Church, 1261 Main Street, Weaverville, CA.
  • Large animal evacuation: Large animals: horses, cattle, are welcome at the Hoopa Rodeo Grounds. There are plenty of paneled pens, water and feed there. We have foster homes prepared for sheep and goats, but you should call ahead to arrange. We can haul for you if needed. Animals we can’t house include cats, dogs, fowl, however we’re happy to help find fosters, crates, feed, if needed. Call (707)492-2851.

  • All Klamath-Trinity schools will be closed for the rest of the week.

Maps are not accurate.

I think CA should make logging companies burn stumps within 2 years of harvesting the trees.

Tons of flare ups and hotspots are direct results of underground dead-root-to-root-to-stump-to-forest burns.
