Motorists traveling over Buckhorn Summit on State Route 299 will see much more progress on emergency slide repairs. Caltrans is reporting the project is on schedule for completion by mid-July.

Crews began paving the eastbound lane this week and expect to complete paving by the end of the day Friday.

As a result, State Route 299 will be fully open to traffic throughout the weekend without construction-related traffic controls.

Beginning next week, however, drivers should continue to expect intermittent daytime traffic control for the final two to three weeks of the project. Caltrans said delays of up to 15 minutes are possible while crews complete the remaining work, which includes guardrail installation, roadway striping, minor drainage improvements, site cleanup, and erosion control.

The emergency repair project is located just east of Buckhorn Summit near the Shasta-Trinity County line, where severe winter weather earlier this year damaged a pullout and part of the eastbound shoulder.

On June 5, Caltrans announced it would implement 24-hour one-way traffic control beginning June 8 after crews discovered minor cracking in the eastbound lane during repair work. Officials said the cracking did not compromise the roadway’s integrity but required preventative repairs to prevent more significant problems from developing.

With paving now nearly complete and the project entering its final phase, Caltrans expects to restore the roadway fully by mid-July.

Caltrans reminds drivers to slow down, remain alert, and watch for construction crews working in the area as the final repairs are completed.
