New Evacuations in Place as Hill Fire Continues to Grow

Hill Fire on the Six Rivers National Forest, July 17, 2024

Hill Fire on the Six Rivers National Forest, July 17, 2024

UPDATE: Latest information here:

———————————-

As of the latest report from Incident Command, the Hill Fire located in eastern Humboldt County has spread to 5,248 acres and is only 2% contained. Despite the challenging conditions in rugged, remote areas, CAL FIRE reports that fire behavior has been moderate “with short runs aligned with slope and the majority of fire flanking and backing downslope into drainages. Moderated conditions allowed for continued tactical firing operations in Division A to have success.”

The fire-fighting efforts involve substantial resources, including 1,512 personnel, 49 crews, 99 engines, 18 pieces of heavy equipment, and 4 helicopters.

In spite of the overall moderate conditions on the fire, late yesterday, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department issued new evacuation orders for areas threatened by the advancing flames.

Expect moderate activity on the fire again today, according to the Fire Behavior Forecast.

We’ve gathered the most important information about the Hill Fire which started on July 15 during a lightning storm and organized it below for our readers. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Plan:

According to this morning’s Cal Fire update (See map below for where the divisions are located),

Division A: Fire should hold along the control line on the west with smoldering and isolated pockets of heat still posing a threat. Continued spread to the south towards Grouse Mountain.

Division D: Backing and flanking fire with occasional upslope runs when in alignment. Roll out will continue to be an issue. Fire has potential to continue to spread to the North, though rates of spread within the 2022 Ammon fire are lower compared to areas outside this footprint.

Division L: Fire has spread into the Mosquito Creek Drainage with potential for slope reversal and uphill runs towards Route 6.

Division Z: Fire continues to flank and back down towards Packeka Creek and Grouse Mountain. Uphill runs possible when fire aligns with slope and NW winds. Fire is likely to cross Packeka without suppression action as southward spread continues.

The Weather:

The National Weather Service is reporting temperatures in the eighties today over the fire. Overall the weather will be warm and dry through the weekend.

The Roads, etc:

Redwood Acres is closed to the public as it  is now a Cal Fire Camp for the Hill Fire. “All upcoming fairgrounds events have been canceled for at least the next two weeks,” Redwood Acres wrote. “Please drive cautiously in the area as increased traffic is expected.”

Humboldt County says,

Humboldt County Public Works has closed the following roads:

    • Harris Street at Hubbard Lane
    • Hall Avenue at Myrtle Avenue

due to the activation of the CAL FIRE Incident Management Base Camp at Redwood Acres.

These closures will be in effect for at least the next two weeks.

Please use alternate routes.

I find the fire evacuation zones very difficult to understand. Is there anywhere a map that shows these zones overlaid with a topo map or any map showing landmarks that can be used to figure out their boundaries?! I don’t know anybody in the hills who knows their “fire zone” nor do I know mine…Such an important thing deserves better maps…

Yup. Good evacuation maps should be an important issue to fix.
Overlay them on the ‘operations map’… that has a good base topo.

I agree 100% with farce. I myself have lived in this area for over 50 years, and I cannot tell from the maps where the evacuations zones are-
The evacuation zones should be overlaid on a regular map that has landmarks people understand like highways, cities, water, courses, etc.

Farce we often disagree, but i know you are one intelligent person, dont the route signs have some fire evacuation scale or route system to evacate fire prone areas. Most important thing is vacate when told. When you loose a person and for that matter a pet, all other stuff is just plan garbage.

I agree with you here! People and animals are the most important. I wish the best for everybody here- yes, even those people I often disparage. Wildfire has us all on the same team for real….

I use the watch duty app and it is pretty awesome with maps and evacuation zones. My mom who lives in Red Bluff has informed me of my zone number here in mck. I don’t know if she could it on the app, but regardless, the app gives you instant updates on the fire as they are obtained and has all current information. It’s extremely helpful. I was able to keep an eye on a fire that was threatening my moms place in Red Bluff, and was able to see the minute by minute updates learning the fire became under control and evacuation orders lowered before she could tell me. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to suggest the app to anyone who would be interested 😊
