Humm…at that mile marker this has been the 3rd single car roll over in just about a year. The highway is rough and curvy with the speed limit reduced. The roadway is often slippery through there, it hardly ever dries out.
Glad they walked away from it. Expect more similar events as the tourist season is upon us.
I, for one, think it is about time to build a road higher up on the mountain where the terrain is stable. At one time there was some talk about building a tunnel, but I think that flopped. The land is owned by one of the Indian tribes, I not sure which one, but I think they would be in agreement with that plan as they have to travel the Last Chance Grade also to go North up the coast.
The actual road exists. Behind the coastal mountain from Hamilton road around to Wilson Creek road. Oh no, caltrans didn’t want that alternative. I brought it up at the public comment meeting. Most of the big trees were taken from there many years ago. Basic roadways are already there from the logging days. The project I mention would be finished sooner than 2039 as planned for a tunnel project.
There was also a lot of support for “Alternative F” which was the tunnel version that they’re going with.
Project document library for those with a month of free time to read.
As far as I know, CalTrans has a $1 to $2 billion billion ‘tunnel’ planned to go through the mountain. Where they are going to find the money… I dunno. Maybe print it I guess.
The plan requires a fully manned (365 days X 24 hours) maintenance station to maintain the ventilation, lighting and perhaps deal with accidents.
Bozo, if Cal Trans has one billion to two billion dollars for a tunnel, I would surely think that “should” cover the total cost. Waiting much longer to build the tunnel and the cost will rise up to the moon!
How do you even roll a vehicle? There are so many of these accidents; i can’t understand it. How much faster than a safe speed would you have to be going to roll over? And why would anyone do that?
One way to roll a vehicle is to turn the wheel sharply at a high rate of speed without braking.
It’s a technical section of road, (not highway) you have to pay attention or your toast.
