A man was struck by a vehicle and left unresponsive on West Harris Street in Eureka today around 12:45 p.m. 11:30 a.m. A Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was also hit by a motorist while directing traffic at the scene.

The collision occurred near WinCo Foods. The victim, a male believed to be in his 40s, was reported to be unresponsive when emergency personnel arrived. Redheaded Blackbelt photojournalist, Mark McKenna states the man was transported by ambulance and was reported to have only minor injuries.

Witnesses on scene told McKenna that a grey Nissan Frontier struck the man as he was attempting to cross the street.

While Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted with diverting traffic at the West Harris Street and Ocean Avenue intersection, a motorist struck a patrol vehicle.

Both lanes of West Harris are closed at Ocean.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Note: This article has been updated after publication to correct two errors. The original version implied that both a vehicle and a law enforcement officer was struck. Only the patrol vehicle was struck. Additionally, the original article stated an EPD vehicle was struck. EPD clarified, and HCSO confirmed, the patrol vehicle struck belonged to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office who was assisting with traffic control. We apologize for any confusion.

So am I right to conclude that the “grey Nissan Frontier” left the scene of the accident?
One thought… there may not be much damage to the truck given that the pedestrian received only minor injuries.

Was the EPD officer hit as the story says or the EPD vehicle hit as the headline says?

A EPD vehicle was involved. It states that a EPD officer was also hit while directing traffic at the scene. Probably some jackass did not see the officer and hit him. A lot of people drive around Eureka with their head up their a**!

Since when does an unresponsive person only have minor injuries? Are people getting their licenses from a gumball machines these days?!?! Holy hell!!

Come on…. You can’t be referring to these special people who might be late to a lunch engagement. Don’t worry, they are used to driving fast. That zone on Harris by Ocean Street is a freeway.

Minor injuries can refer to visible injuries. Unconsciousness depends on the Glasgow Coma Scale. Plus, unconsciousness might not relate to unresponsiveness. One can be visibly awake but unresponsive. Common ER-speak for that is “Dude’s scrambled.” Not a dx to be entered into the EMR.

Example, a fighter can be knocked out and have no injuries at all.

Wow. Just wow. How can one be so incompetent as to run over a cop while driving through an accident scene???

misplaced attention? eyes on the accident instead of the road. but that’s no excuse…

More like eyes on their screen, be it recording the accident or texting someone.
Im over people being on screens while behind the wheel.

As I mentioned, these are special people who don’t have to abide by the rules like the rest of us.

I walked by and the dude was sitting up. Crazy motorists speed all day long on West Harris. Cops do zilch. Someone is going to die on this stretch. Arrogant pickup and SUV drivers think they rule the road. Its madness out there. Pedestrians are open targets. I have nearly been hit many times. Terrible people behind the wheel. Homicidal Humboldt drivers.

Pisces Party. Neutral ground. All colors, no beefs.

R.I.P. Dave. He was the first one from that crowd that didn’t turn his nose up at our little 200 & 250 cc Hondas. Packed house and a 21 gun salute at his wake.

The curb outs impede the winco driveway. They have created a traffic hazard.

A hint to WINCo.

They need to trim the hedge facing Harris Street.
Obstructs the view of pedestrians and cars as you exit the parking lot.

(Grr. Why can’t I login with Disqus?)

So the pickup was running amok by itself, with no driver? It’s semantics, but they can be important. You never see a headline that reads “Gun Shoots Man”; it’s always about the perpetrator, not the tool. But when the tool is a motorized vehicle, we always see headlines and stories like the above, where responsibility is given to the tool, and removed from the person wielding it. /rant

I hope everyone’s okay, and I hope they catch the driver.
