The victim of a shooting that rattled the Hoopa Valley Tuesday evening has been transported to the coast and subsequently flown out of the area for medical treatment. A tweet from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office stated that the male victim was in critical condition as of 8:04 p.m. tonight.
The shooting, which occurred on Little Moon Lane at the south end of Hoopa, prompted a large emergency response Tuesday afternoon and left the close-knit community shaken. The victim was transported to the coast before an air ambulance carried them out of the region.
Investigators continued working the scene into the night. Just after 9:30 p.m., an evidence tow was requested for a Chevrolet Cruz located on Tish Tang Campground. No further details about the investigation have been released.
Hoopa Valley Tribal Police directed questions from this outlet to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, which noted that an update would not be available until regular office hours Wednesday morning.
As of this reporting, law enforcement has not publicly confirmed whether any suspect(s) has been identified or taken into custody, and no description has been released. Whether an arrest has been made remains unknown at this time. In the meantime, residents should remain aware of their surroundings and report anything suspicious.
In response to the shooting, the Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District notified families Tuesday evening that all KTJUSD schools will be closed Wednesday, March 11. District officials cited the off-campus incident and said the closure is intended as a precautionary measure and to give the community time to process the events of the day.
Anyone with information related to the shooting is urged to come forward. Hoopa Valley Tribal Police can be reached through their non-emergency line at (530) 625-4202, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office can be contacted at (707) 268-2539. As always, in the event of an emergency or if you have urgent information, call 911 immediately.
This is a developing story and will be updated as confirmed information becomes available.
Statement from Superintendent of KTJUSD:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Due to the off-campus shooting that occurred this evening, all schools will be closed tomorrow. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution and to allow our students, staff, and families time to process this tragic event.
Our thoughts are with the family and everyone affected by this incident. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority, and we are continuing to work closely with local law enforcement.
We will resume school as soon as possible to provide counseling services to any students or staff who may need support.
We will share additional updates as information becomes available. Thank you for your understanding and continued support of our school community.
Sincerely,
Jacqueline McCullough
Superintendent
Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District

Whatever happened to a good old fists fight? Now it’s guns n knives.
Hell you want to shoot someone get on a damn video game. Stop shooting your classmates, friends or family.
Get a freaking life
1969 West Campus Berkeley High = guns and knives. Kind of a war zone back then even. Lots of posturing.
Hoopa and covelo. Two of the same lawless places.
Excuse me? Humboldt has the highest crime rate. The worst state in America for disappeared and murdered is Alaska. And the rate of missing people is actually higher in humboldt with over 700 per 100,000. For perspective new mexico has a area that people go missing around Farmington but the rate is 50 per 100,000.
We also have 2 towns that have shared the prestigious award of being the murder capital of “california.. hoopa and covelo didn’t make the list. Alderpoint and mckinleyville did!
I might believe that too if I had never been out of Humboldt County before. Get a bus ticket south someday and you too will see it is a wild, wild world out there.
They already left town but keep coming back to the comment section.
I don’t recall they ever said that the rest of the world didn’t have crime, but ignoring that crime rates are higher in Humboldt is extremely illogical.
700/100000? Do you have a source to back that up? Your numbers are way off.

“244 of those were juveniles, and out of those 242 were located. So actually, only two people who were reported missing last year are still missing, so to speak,” said Honsal.
The number of adults who go missing in Humboldt County also considerably decreases.
“So out of the 238 that were reported last year, 203 of those were located and determined to be removed from the system,” said Honsal.
Your stats don’t change a thing. If the shooter is a minor, the parents are responsible for the actions of their “child” and by the law, should be jailed and face charges. Tribal court won’t “fix” this.
Argument can be made for the entire county
Wait til’ you
hear about
this place called,
‘Eureka’!
Or, gawd-forbid,
Washington DC!
We’re all waiting for the rest of the story.
