Suspected Arson Under Investigation After Friday’s Early Morning Fires Near Hoopa
Press release from Hoopa Wildland Fire:
At approximately 12:45 AM, Hoopa Dispatch received reports of two separate vegetation fires at the beginning of the Gorge, just outside of Hoopa.
The Hoopa Valley Volunteer Fire Department was initially dispatched and responded to the incident. Shortly thereafter, Hoopa Wildland Fire arrived on scene and assumed fire suppression operations.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the two fires had burned together, ultimately becoming one unified fire. The fire burned approximately 0.5 acres of heavy brush, poison oak, and leaf litter before being contained by responding personnel.
Due to the potential for fire spread and the increased fire activity throughout the valley, the U.S. Forest Service Lower Trinity Ranger District, which had been assigned to the Rodeo Fire, was redirected to assist with the Bluff Fire. Two U.S. Forest Service engines and a Forest Service Fire Prevention Representative responded to support suppression efforts and the ongoing investigation.
Based on the initial assessment, the fires are believed to be intentionally set (suspected arson). The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Hoopa Wildland Fire reminds the community that intentionally setting fires places lives, homes, natural resources, and emergency responders at risk. With warm, dry conditions and the Fourth of July holiday, even a small fire can quickly become a significant wildfire.
As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, we encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly:
- Report any smoke or suspicious fire activity immediately by calling 911 or Hoopa Dispatch.
- Never leave campfires or recreational fires unattended.
- Use fireworks only where they are legally permitted and exercise extreme caution.
- Help protect our community by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity.
Hoopa Wildland Fire extends its appreciation to the Hoopa Valley Volunteer Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service Lower Trinity Ranger District for their rapid mutual aid response and continued partnership in protecting the Hoopa Valley community.
