Emergency communications received multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooting in progress, with callers stating someone had been struck. Law enforcement units responded code 3 — lights and sirens — to the area. Later reports to dispatch confirmed the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
Dispatch initially reported the subjects involved were still in the vicinity of the high school. That situation shifted when subsequent calls indicated the victim had been placed in the back of a grey Honda Acura, and was being transported toward the Hoopa Wildland Fire Department, apparently in an effort to intercept incoming law enforcement and first responders.
According to dispatch, the victim could be heard breathing and moaning during an active 911 call, indicating the person was alive at the time of transport.
Tribal police made contact with the subjects shortly afterwards. Given the severity of the victim’s injuries, an air ambulance has been requested to respond. An landing zone has been established at Berry Summit on Highway 299 where the ground ambulance will meet the awaiting helicopter.*
The condition of the victim and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear. No suspect information was immediately available. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.
Update 6:33 p.m.: The shooting victim has been transported to a hospital on the coast. The Reach air ambulance is en route to transfer the victim to an out-of-area hospital.
Redheaded Blackbelt spoke with an officer of the Hoopa Valley Police Department who was able to confirm that though scanner traffic indicated the victim was near the high school and then the Hoopa Wildland Fire Department, the shooting is reported to have occurred south of there on Little Moon Lane at the south end of Hoopa.
Law enforcement are in the Hoopa Valley actively searching for suspect(s).
UPDATE 9:23 p.m.: Hoopa Valley High School officials have notified families that all Hoopa Valley schools will be closed Wednesday, March 11, 2026, following the shooting reported Tuesday evening in Hoopa.

In a message sent to parents and guardians, school officials said the closure was made “out of an abundance of caution and to allow our students, staff, and families time to process this tragic event.”
The decision comes after law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting Tuesday evening that left one person with a serious gunshot wound. The victim was transported by ambulance to meet a helicopter at Berry Summit before being taken to a hospital on the coast and later transferred to an out-of-area hospital.
Authorities have said the shooting is believed to have occurred on Little Moon Lane at the south end of Hoopa, not directly at the high school as some early scanner traffic suggested.
Law enforcement officers remained in the Hoopa Valley Tuesday evening searching for the suspect or suspects involved. The condition of the victim has not been publicly released.

Has the the shooter been arrested?
There are several people reporting that this was a known threat for several days and the kids have been begging for the threat to be taken seriously.
The update seems to indicate that it isn’t really related to the high school.
This is so tragic. My heart goes out to the parents and family. Also yo the Hoopa valley Reservation because I know this effects Hoopa as a whole.
