Students Vacate Nelson Hall Overnight; No Arrests Reported

About 20 individuals who had been occupying a meeting room in Nelson Hall East left the building voluntarily around 2 a.m. Saturday, allowing Cal Poly Humboldt to clear and secure the facility, according to a statement from the University. Officials reported no arrests and no injuries.

The University said individuals were free to leave at any time and vacated the building after multiple dispersal warnings. Campus operations have resumed as normal, though some buildings remain locked. The University also stated that several individuals who occupied the meeting room have been identified and will be addressed through “appropriate campus and legal processes.”

“We respect everyone’s First Amendment right to free expression–regardless of their viewpoints and backgrounds,” the statement read. “We also support the rights of all students, staff, and faculty to a safe and respectful learning and working environment that is free from disruptions.”

Reporter Ryan Littleton, who was on scene, said that at approximately 1:45 a.m., multiple police vehicles arrived near Nelson Hall and Library Circle. He estimated about eight police cars entered campus and positioned themselves at main entrances to the building.

“They played the speaker — the arrest warning from last time,” Littleton said, referencing a prior campus protest response. According to Littleton, once officers began moving in, “the students knew how to get off campus” and “they all left once the cops were going in.”

By about 3 a.m., the building had been cleared, he said. Littleton believed the vehicles were from the Arcata Police Department.

University officials said they do not have additional details at this time but will provide updates as more information becomes available.

I think it is only speculation to suggest that all of them were actually CPH students…

Someone working class blue collar is going to have to clean up after these bucket pissers & clean up the mess. They don’t actually care about the working class.

I think picture of that piss bucket emptied out would have rounded this article out and brought some closure to those of us/we/them who are concerned about the inhumane treatment of these brave warriors.

That would be hazmat stuff under the circumstances. If they didn’t take it with them, Hazmat Response should have been called. and the protesters billed. Unknown bodily fluid exposure to janitor’s is not in the job description. Hope they have their Hep B + C and other vaccines up to date.

Lol for real. The bucket : unsung villain and hero in this story. Did they take it home? Or was someone appointed hygiene coordinator post protest ? Did they leave it and is that – not just morally wrong but – against the law? ….or will it be further documented as evidence for their retaliatory lawsuit?
So many questions.

In all likelihood, it was left for janitorial staff to deal with, along with probably all manner of other mess as well. Arguing about investments that are pretty meager in the grand scheme of things, claiming to do it in the name of the oppressed, while treating actual members of the community as less than by making them clean up after them. Really undercuts any validity their message may have had. If these people actually wanted change, they would be attending the boring meetings where decisions are made, but anarchist sleepovers are much more fun and get them this kind of attention

Wow. No arrests. A few who were identified will be communicated with by “appropriate campus and legal processes.” Ha Ha! Well…expect this kind of crap to continue! Unless you draw a firm line these belligerent morons will not learn. A university that doesn’t even know how to teach teenagers how to behave properly is a sad institute indeed. Lots of police time and expenses all around for everybody else to pay for…and these children just walk away. They owned you Cal Poly…

Arrest them for what? They were given a trespass warning, they left. That’s how trespass warnings work.

Used to be the point was to get arrested to bring attention to the cause. It was how to make vlear the seriousness of the protest. This seems more like gorilla warfare.

I think you’re right, until your last sentence. This is deeply unserious protest. Something redundant about ice, something irrelevant about Palestine, and something about the local union that had it’s own well organized protest during it’s labor dispute. And they can’t even make it a day in their sit in plus they whine about the bathrooms getting closed after business hours.

Seems like some college kids who got stoned after an intro to sociology class and decided to do some heckin social justice!

Hopefully they learned something about the degree of sacrifice people made to actually move the needle on social issues. Most likely they are going back to social media activism since it’s easier

Along with up to 40 top leadership. DOA.

…Apparently Israeli intel agents infiltrated Iranian security forces to coordinate the attacks that happened this morning.

I came across some substacks late last night about international NOTAMs to aircraft being put out, and sure enough airspace in and around Iran and the tip of Oman started to clear out, so something was up. Then noticed a train of US military on ADS-b on the way back and over again. Might only have been an hour or two after that when attack craft entered the chat.

I kind of figured that this wouldn’t be a one-and-done strike, but a sustained one, given the number of support aircraft heading to the region. But if I’m not mistaken, Qatar is where a lot of it was being staged as the UAE and the Saudis and even Iraq said no launching direct attacks from their territories

Some people see the best way to win a debate is to assign their opponent a position and the proceed to berate them for it.
It’s unfortunate, and it is unlikely to result in any meaningful dialog or finding of common ground.

A new go-to is calling the other person a bigot (or an “ist” or a “phobe”), followed by the classic finish of sticking your fingers in your ears and repeating, “Na na na na boo boo, I can’t hear you”.

“Is it reasonable to use the phrase, “…as I and most sane folks would say…”…???”

“Whether it is “reasonable” to use the phrase “as I and most sane folks would say” depends heavily on context, as it is a polarizing, loaded statement rather than a neutral one.

Here is a breakdown of why it is generally considered unreasonable or ineffective in polite or productive discourse:

It is Highly Condescending:

By implying that only “sane” people agree with you, you are implicitly labeling anyone with a differing opinion as “insane” unreasonable, or mentally compromised.

It Shuts Down Debate:

The phrase is a form of fallacious reasoning (specifically, an appeal to common sense or ad hominem). It is designed to silence opposition rather than engage with counter-arguments.

It Creates “Us vs. Them” Divides:

It encourages polarization, often used to frame an issue as a battle between logical, normal people and unreasonable, misguided ones.

It Makes Assumptions:

It assumes a false consensus, asserting that your personal opinion is the widely held, logical default, which is rarely true for complex or subjective issues.

When is it used?

The phrase is often used in emotionally charged, informal arguments—such as in social media comment sections, political debates, or when expressing strong, personal frustration—to assert dominance over a topic.

Better Alternatives

If the goal is to persuade or have a productive conversation, you are better off using phrases that focus on evidence or subjective, shared experience:

“In my experience…”

“Most people I have spoken to seem to think…”

“From a logical standpoint, it seems that…”

Conclusion

While it is not “forbidden” to use, it is generally not a reasonable way to engage in constructive, polite, or persuasive dialogue. It is an argumentative device that often backfires by making the speaker appear condescending or closed-minded.”

Yes- it’s called “The Straw Man Argument” and it is a classic logical fallacy. Only in this case I am actually repeating actual comments made here in the past. I am not inventing them. I am simply repeating them in an attempt to disarm their stupidity from jumping back out at us all. So we can move forward ie. “be progressive” in our debates. You’re welcome. Now…why should we have left the Ayatollah alone to kill his own people and develop nuclear weapons with missile technology? Because Trump’s action WILL be vilified here any moment. Yes- I am psychic- I can see the future of this comment section lol!

Those identified should be banned from all state campuses.
Any building damage is paid for in full or jail all of those involved. Get the parents involved, they have the deep pockets of money.
Permanently close the campus.
