On this day in 1868, the 14th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, guaranteeing citizenship to all persons born within the United States.

Fun fact: Folarin Balogun, the soccer player Trump intervened on behalf of, is a US citizen through birthright.
His parents are Nigerian but were visiting the US. Airline staff did not allow his mom to board the flight out due to safety concerns over the advanced state of her pregnancy, so he was born in New York.

While Trump was having a fit, and trying to print his own red cards to throw, Balogun had a civil conversation with the Belgian coach after the loss. It went well. Because that’s what rational adults do.

Secretary of State and acting National Security Advisor, little Marco Rubio is also a birthright citizen. Parents were illegal Cuban immigrants.

A relatively easy and natural way to combat potential wildfires that doesn’t involve raking may be coming to an end.

“RED BLUFF, Calif. — A Red Bluff-based goat grazing company says its herds could be gone from the Northstate unless a state wage issue is fixed.
Western Grazers owns about 5,000 goats, split among eight herders. The goats are used across the Northstate and beyond to eat dry grass and brush that can fuel wildfires.
Owner Tim Arrowsmith said goatherders and sheepherders had been paid the same, but a state sunset clause tied to goatherder wages was not removed. He said that change took effect July 1.”

This all looks pretty screwy. The owner says the he effectively pays goat herders $20k/month. That’s just business weasel wording to say that they don’t get $20k/month, in the same way that ‘up to’ and ‘as much as’ mean ‘less than’ and ‘as little as’ means ‘more than’.

Regardless of how much they actually earn, it’s a sad commentary on America that we must import foreign workers to do a job so simple that it pre dates civilization. I suspect that if goat herders actually earned $20k/month they’d have Americans lining up to do it.

Umm… to anyone I invited over for dinner this weekend,
I’m afraid I’m going to have to cancel.

I find it rather strange that researchers believe that early man would’ve made the connection between a behavior like cannibalism and disease when the doctors didn’t make the connection until the mid 19th century. By then, doctors and researchers were well aware of the existence of microbes but they weren’t sure about the connection to disease. Couple the practice of cannibalism to religious rituals, and I just can’t feature some cultures figuring it out.
