Emergency crews are responding to a reported fire along northbound U.S. Highway 101 near the Redcrest off-ramp, with firefighters requesting that the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans respond for a possible highway closure. According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page, the incident was reported shortly after 4:10 p.m. on the shoulder of northbound Highway 101 near the Redcrest off-ramp. Initial reports indicate there is a fire “on the right shoulder.” A reporting party also advised there was an unknown truck stopped on the right shoulder, though it is unclear whether the vehicle is connected to the fire.
By approximately 4:20 p.m., the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) requested assistance from CHP and Caltrans for a possible closure of Highway 101, suggesting the incident could affect traffic in the area.
CHP units were dispatched and en route as firefighters continued their response. An air attack is on the way overhead.
The extent of the fire and whether any lanes have been closed has not yet been confirmed. Motorists traveling through the Redcrest area should be prepared for possible traffic delays and use caution around emergency personnel.
Information is based on CHP dispatch traffic and may change as the incident develops.
UPDATE 4:21 p.m.: According to radio traffic all air resources are being cancelled and there is hose lay around the fire. However, the northbound lane of 101 is closed as emergency vehicles deal with the residual fire.
