Students Dispute Cal Poly Humboldt’s Investment Claims After Siemens Hall Protest

University officials told Redheaded Blackbelt that approximately 30 students participated in the Feb. 20 protest, no arrests were made, and that the university holds no direct investments in defense companies or Israeli-issued securities. Officials estimated potential indirect investment tied to defense-related or Israeli-linked holdings at “less than 1%” of the university’s more than $54 million endowment.
Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) Humboldt issued a written statement Saturday arguing that even indirect holdings are unacceptable.
“The university states that it has no direct investments … and that potential indirect investments amount to ‘less than 1%’ of a $54 million portfolio,” the group wrote. “First, this confirms what students have been saying all along: there are indirect investments tied to defense and Israeli-linked securities.”
SDS argued that the size of the percentage does not address their central demand for a permanent policy prohibiting investment, directly or indirectly, in military industries.
The group also criticized the university for not directly addressing protesters’ demand for a formal non-cooperation policy with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), calling that omission “noticeably absent.”
On the issue of Teamsters Local 2010 wage negotiations, SDS rejected the university’s explanation that bargaining occurs at the CSU system level, writing that “passing the buck is not neutrality” and asserting that campus leadership could still advocate publicly for workers.
Students also pushed back on the university’s description of participation numbers, arguing the sit-in reflects broader organizing efforts on campus beyond the approximately 30 demonstrators who entered Siemens Hall.
According to SDS, Associate Vice President Mike Fisher agreed to participate in a public forum on the main quad at 8 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 27.
The group wrote that they “remain ready for meaningful dialogue” but said that “dialogue without concrete policy change is deflection.”

Students who don’t like CPH policies are encouraged to go spend daddy’s money at another college or university. Quit whining and study…
Reminds me of when the Dixie Chicks were told “just shut up and sing”
that was good advice.
And they didn’t have another album released for 14 years after that. There’s any number of artists whose personal beliefs or politics that don’t jive with mine but I like their music. Mostly. Like any number of actors. I want to see their movies. I don’t care what they spout off about off-screen.
Although watching Trevor Noah bait Bad Bunny at the Grammys was irritating. They tried hard to goad him into making political comments and taking sides. And that’s why I try not to pay attention to what they do out of the studios.
I love Bruce. Love his songs of working class Jersey life and love and such. Not so keen on his latest Hate On Trump riffs. I don’t like Trump but I won’t buy into all the HATE messaging. I’d rather hear about good stuff we can do instead. Still like old Bruce and the E Street Band tho- not gonna let his new stuff ruin that for me…
Funny to see people I know glomming onto him now! They never listened or liked him much when he was young and killer. But now- he says Hate Trump and they’re buying tickets LOL! And trying to pretend they always loved Bruce LOL! I guess he’s “singing their song”. It’s embarrassing to watch…
Reminds me of the type ting that was likely said to, or about prison guards at the death camps.
Does anybody outside of their little bubble of importance even care?
Expell these students. Do not negotiate.
What kind of educational system are you hoping to achieve with such an idea?
One with actual educated students not an education system filled with communist agitators who derail actual education.
These kids literally walk out of the classroom and spend their time outside protesting shit and then at the end of the semester wonder why they’re retarded and didn’t learn anything and blame the teachers and the institution for their lack of education.
“Hurr durr I’m $120k in debt to a college for a liberal arts major and I didn’t learn anything except how to complain about everything! Now I want the government to bail me out and clear my tuition debt!”
The colleges should expell them immediately and sue them for defamation. And to be quite frank, if they didn’t want their money going to israel they should not have given tuition to that college in the first place and should have done their research as to where their tuition money would be applied.
These people are idiots. Send them home.
The timing is “a tell”! The protest is more about Iran than Palestinians and Hamas – beneficiaries of Iran. Protesters got the “message”. They couldn’t exactly protest for a Country that (by some a counts) murdered 40,000 + of their own people protesting their regime. If the US gets involved militarily – the local protest “groupies” will show up.
SDS = Students For A Derelict Society.
A perfect example where the inmates want to run the asylum!!!
Why does this even get reported? It just encourages the behavior. And yes, i know they have a right to peacefully protest, and be stupid.
Protest involving a public university building, administrative response, and policy demands about investment, immigration cooperation, and labor contracts is inherently newsworthy. It involves public funds, public officials, and public space.
True enough, but it’s still ridiculous on the protesters ‘knowledge level’ of how the system works with the university.
Well they wanted attention and they got it. The lesson also learned is that attention might not be what they were hoping for (e.g. internet comment sections). The only way to control that is to not have comment sections at all, and that’d be boring.
So true, kudos. How ever the term ‘wikipidiots’ still comes to mind.
Spring Xing protests provide wonderful, kinetic learning experiences, and they must be non-violent and non-destructive.
That’s what they told the non-violent protestor that exercised a kinetic learning experience in Portland Oregon by throwing a rock at the feds – hitting one in the head. He’s convicted and looking at a learning experience of possibly 20 years.
Like the protesters attempting to overthrow the 2020 election. Good point. Violence is a loser.
Yeah … like bringing a gun with two extra clips as a non-violent protestor – protesting ICE. What could possibly go wrong?
Yep, the Second Amendment sucks.
You mean common sense.
Yeah guns suck… until you need one. That’s the “Butch Cassidy Principle” (Hollyweird style). Giant dude wants to fight and pulls a big glimmering knife and comes at him. Butch pulls his gun and drops him! First, Butch gives him the “really?” look! Bringing a gun to a knife fight – it ain’t fair.
And….what happened? the person who did NOT pull nor show a gun is the one that got shot. Repeately. Not in the knee to disable. Straight up blown away. How many clips did the LEO use to kill a man two feet away? At least a full one.
Yeah and the gal that got wasted by a trigger happy guard in the Capital – didn’t even have a gun! Just thought I’d bring that up to balance the BS. Where were you with the same rhetoric when that happened? Hypocrisy aside from the Democrats, Progressives – ICE protesters – both scenarios are bad! It’s what can happen when “it” hits the fan.
Ignoring the context is impressive…. Alex Pretti was on an open street and was attempting to protect a woman during a chaotic situation. He was overpowered by multiple officers and on his knees with his hands on the ground. Ashli Babbitt was climbing through a broken window into a restricted area of the U.S. Capitol, at the front of a large crowd that had violently assaulted police officers and chanted about killing Mike Pence that had already breached the building. Lawmakers were being evacuated and a single Capitol Police officer was positioned between the mob and members of Congress.
So here’s the hard question: at what point is an officer justified in using deadly force to prevent a breach when elected officials are feet away and a violent crowd is advancing?
Both incidents are tragic. But if we’re going to compare them, we have to compare the circumstances honestly — location, threat level, what the officer could see, and what they were trying to protect.
If you got a job as a police officer you would have to make those types of decisions, and you would probably make more money.
but I guess you can judge them how you want from your view
You ignore that the guard shot an unarmed person. The guy that was packing also got shot. In a very inflammatory situation who was the greater threat? The guy “packing” or the woman who was not. All bets are off when violence and accosting law-enforcement occurs. We would like that neither were killed – but it’s a dangerous world when you decide to put yourself in such situations. That’s the tragedy. Spare me the honesty lecture. “We” includes you to compare them honestly. Both folks are no longer a threat to anyone.
Also Kym… I see in your assessment of Ashli that you left out she had guards/law enforcement standing right next to her (it’s archived on film). Luckily, one of them didn’t get shot when the shooting started!
There was no hail of shots fired like in the Alex Pretti case. One shot was fired. I’m going to lay out one more time the situation and unless you have opposing info, I’m not going to bother responding.
This is the scene. Multiple police officers have been badly injured trying to keep a mob away from lawmakers doing a lawful transfer of power. THe fight went on for hours with the mob breaking down barriers to get into the Capitol. There are multiple threats to kill the lawmakers. About 2:30 p.m. law makers were being evacuated on one side of some doors down a hallway so close to the mob on the other side of the doors that “I could look them in the eyes,” said Representative Jim McGovern. officers had piled furniture up to help keep the mob from breeching the doors and killing the lawmakers. Between the mob and lawmakers was a single officer with 36 bullets to his gun. Byrd fired a single shot.
The 3 officers on the other side of the door near Babbit were vastly outnumbered by hundreds of people there. They left just previous to Babbit climbing through the smashed window.
An unarmed attacker (she actually was carrying a knife on her person but I would agree that she was basically unarmed) backed by hundreds is a vastly different threat than one man on his hands and knees with a holstered legal concealed carried gun being beaten by seven officers. One is the point person on a wave of attackers. One is no threat at all.
So you are saying with your last statement that a guy shows up to protest with a loaded gun and two extra clips is no threat at all? Good luck with that! I reiterate: both these folks who were killed were tragic. Likely by dangerous actions that were a bad situation and mistake. Comes with the territory. You can’t take it back.
So let me get this straight.
You think Ashli Babbitt was wrongfully killed–even though she was actively breaching a barricaded doorway with an angry mob waiting to follow her while lawmakers were being evacuated behind it. This after multiple officers had been beaten by the same mob.
But you think Pretti’s killing was justified because he showed up with a firearm? He didn’t even touch it. He was lawfully carrying it. He never threatened anyone with it. In fact, seven officers beat him to the ground and he never went after it.
If Babbitt’s case hinges on whether there was an imminent threat in that specific moment, then the same analysis applies to Pretti. What was he doing at the moment force was used? Was he advancing? Aiming? Firing?
You don’t get to argue Babbit was Wasted by a trigger happy guard in one case and then in the other excuse seven officers who have beaten Pretti to the ground while he never touched a weapon were justified in shooting him.
You aren’t even trying to be consistent. As a society we have to apply standards evenly/fairly–or it isn’t about principle, it’s about who is on my side.
Don’t put words in my mouth. I’m saying both those “killings” were wrong. Both look to me as unjustified. To the contrary, you seem to be the one saying Ashli’s killing was justified. Stop the not trying to be consistent BS. I’m embarrassed you you!
You say that Pretti was trying to protect someone…???
So, please explain why after Pretti was pepper sprayed, Pretti started momentarily physically rag dolling with both hands, violently, the woman on the ground you allege he was trying to protect…???
Did you somehow miss those few seconds that he was violently rag dolling her, before he was separated from her, and was taken to the ground by the agents…???
Because I did not…
And the Capital police officer could have easily be retreated, and as I recall seeing, there was another officer possibly armed with a rifle, that was down the hall from him, that he could have at least retreated to…
You say the state should receive “more scrutiny”, unless it’s Ashli Babbitt getting shot…
But, then somehow, when the narrative crumbles, you scrutinize the citizen, to a much greater degree than you scrutinize the “state”…???
Nobody missed anything TRG. We went over all this already, ad nauseum. This is stirring an old pot.
I’m glad you didn’t miss Pretti rag dolling the woman on the ground…
Because it was pretty obvious…
He may have thought it was the agent that pepper sprayed him, that he was violently rag dolling, after he got such a big dose of pepper spray…
Maybe I will look it up again, and provide a link and a time stamp…
Pretti starts violently rag dolling the woman he was supposedly “protecting” at about the 3:23 minute mark…
https://youtu.be/MOMXJvbCEtk?si=4ISR4f7EAetE4bZ-
That’s Pretti, below, still with a grasp on the woman he just got done violently shaking, ashe gets pulled off of, and away from, her…
Ok I’m not going to sit and rehash all this with you as you seem to just want to cherry pick what you want to fit your own narrative. Go back and look at some of the longer videos I posted the day it happened. I mean, I was the one that started the comment shitshow here that day. We’ve gone over all of this already. Find someone else to argue your beliefs with.
Not sure why the screen grab didn’t post…
Here it is again…
It’s willful revisionist delusions.
To couch Pretti’s behavior as some kind of altruistic mission – he was “running to the aide of /defending” the woman- with whom ICE was actively engaging- is so wildly out of touch it hardly deserves a reply!
Under no circumstances does a sane person insert themselves in the actions of federal agents . It’s dangerous . Felonious. And frankly, stupid. Defending those actions? Draw your own conclusions.
The unasked question is just who do these students think they are to make these demands on anyone or any organization? Is there to be no consideration of the many students who disagree with the protestors simply because they don’t form a loud mob and make demands?
Forming a loud mob and trying to intimidate or low key bully others into doing what you want based on your subjective morality is really obnoxious. Especially if you would reject others doing that to some aspect of your life.
BLM riots taught many things….
Yeah like what happens when you don’t pay your grazing fees for 20 years on government land and expect that to continue. Then throw a fit when it doesn’t.
They just want to harass the University.
While “less than 1%” is not zero, these kids have obviously not learned to choose their battles wisely.
It’s the optimistic and obtuse naïveté of youth – relatable, and temporary.
Would throwing tea into the bay make you stone throwers happier?
Maybe throw weed into the bay. It’s cheaper and more relevant…
Agreed, it is newsworthy.
But mostly it involves a few dozen activist students trying to coerce, intimidate and manipulate their elders, and discombobulate preexisting institutions.
all this done through the non-democratic means of demands made during protest, backed by implicit threats of further mob action.
is this democracy?
it’s not very appealing…
having to listen to a bunch of yelling dissidents, no matter left or right.
who could handle it?
SDS are full blown communists and mostly La Raza radicals from Southern California. When I attended HSU 70% of students were from SoCal. Spoiled anchor baby brats go home. Find a revolution in your grandma’s country. punks
I support the SDS students and their goals 100%
I support the 70 & 80 year old women reliving their hippy protest days of the Vietnam War in Trinidad. So validating when you’re soon to test Heavens Gate.
I believe there are still Holocaust survivors that tour US colleges to speak to history challenged students about real life and Jew hatred. These idiots could use some enlightenment. Meanwhile parents everywhere see this kind of publicity and and say to themselves: ” isn’t this the same place that traded an economics major for a dope growing major?? Nope, no way my kid is going there”
A Business major is a good choice for a pot grower. Learning accounting might help a grower buy that Tesla.
Oh the downsides of home automation. Man reverse engineers his autobot vaccuum cleaner so he can use a game controller to operate it. Gains access to 7000 more globally and can peek into living rooms due to lack of security protocols.
SkyNet won’t kill us because it can. It will because nobody changed the passwords and told them they couldn’t.
This confirms the report that came out last week saying that for the first time since records have been kept Gen Z is dumber than the previous generation. And the worst part, They’re proud of it!
That’s why they’re Gen Z- it’s the end of the road!
Your Government spent $30 billion to replace books with laptops and now AI teaching. The results were terrible.
“Earlier this year, in written testimony before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath said that Gen Z is less cognitively capable than previous generations, despite its unprecedented access to technology. He said Gen Z is the first generation in modern history to score lower on standardized tests than the previous one.
While skills measured by these tests, like literacy and numeracy, aren’t always indicative of intelligence, they are a reflection of cognitive capability, which Horvath said has been on the decline over the last decade or so.”
BLESS THESE COURAGEOUS STUDENTS!!! It’s inspiring when youth ACT!
All of you who complain are enablers of, and excusing investments in murder, destruction and genocide! The state of California, much less our educational system, should NOT be making $$$ from WARfare! Shame on you!
And yes. Thank you Kym for publishing important stories about our cultural struggles!
I have some savings invested. But NONE of it goes to the military industrial complex, to oil companies, etc! It’s ‘socially responsible investing’. I may earn a little less from that decision, but I act, live my values, and sleep better at night.
The way RHBB shamelessly embraces blatant antisemitism is horrifying.
It’s shocking how Nazism is taking hold of the protests against the University. SDS demands the University never has any little thing, even indirectly and out of their control, to do with (Jews) Israel. Because that is what this is about.
Israel has made real advances in desalinization, agriculture, land restoration, and all the techs a Poly Tech could want. It is short sighted and hateful, it isn’t a benefit to the University that is now billing itself as a Poly Tech. All because of October 7th.
Evidently these student organizers need to learn about personal investing. Diversified Mutual funds are the tools of many investors. And look up the jokes about how ESG Funds or (ESR) fund performance compares to non ESR Funds.
If they are complaining about less than 1 percent of the holdings… The students need to return to read more about finance and mutual funds.
