A major traffic collision on Broadway in Eureka this afternoon left one woman with major injuries after reports of a reckless driver moments before the crash.

According to Eureka Police Department Commander Leonard LaFrance, officers were dispatched at about 12:41 p.m., for reports of a reckless driver on Broadway, roughly 20 blocks north of where the crash later occurred near the former Kmart location in the 4200 block of Broadway.

Several callers reported that a vehicle matching the black GMC with out-of-state plates was swerving in and out of lanes. While officers were responding, police received reports of a collision at the Broadway location.

When officers arrived, they found three vehicles involved in the crash. Two vehicles sustained major damage, while a blue pickup truck reportedly suffered minor damage after being struck or sideswiped somewhere between the Bayshore Mall area and the crash scene, according to preliminary information from investigators.

LaFrance said the vehicle previously described as a Denali is actually a GMC Sierra truck with a “Black Widow” upgrade package. Police said the Sierra had been traveling southbound on Broadway, while a Hyundai Tucson was traveling northbound. For reasons still under investigation, the Sierra crossed into the northbound lane and collided with the Hyundai.

Both drivers, two adult women, had to be extricated by Humboldt Bay Fire and were transported to the hospital by ambulance. LaFrance said the Hyundai driver suffered major injuries, while the Sierra driver did not appear to have visible injuries when she was removed from the vehicle, though she was transported for evaluation.

Among the debris near the Sierra were cardboard boxes that appeared to contain cannabis-packaging supplies, including boxes labeled for 50mm child-resistant jar lids commonly used for retail flower containers. Several cannabis flower jars with labels appearing to read “Humboldt” were also visible at the scene. LaFrance confirmed they came from the Sierra.

LaFrance said there has been no arrest related to the crash and added there is “no indication that marijuana played a role” in the collision.

Investigators documented the crash scene and collected evidence this afternoon.

The crash shut down northbound U.S. 101 traffic through Broadway for a period Tuesday afternoon and caused significant backups in both directions, but, as of 4 p.m., the backed up traffic is largely flowing normally

The investigation remains ongoing.

Well…as an armchair quarterback who is very tired of people behaving terribly and facing zero consequences I’m gonna say it….IF the driver of the Sierra is the reported reckless driver who was swerving into and out of lanes then she needs to be charged heavily for the injuries to the innocent woman. Assault with a deadly weapon (the Sierra) comes to mind. I hope the injured woman recovers fully and quickly. The weed jars- well that’s just wonderful because I’m sure they are all for a permitted “white” weed business- you know the “good players”…

Every trip on Broadway, I stay in the slow lane with my flashers on. I have already seen too much, and avoided a few probable accidents. You will notice an ’03 gold Sierra pickup with the emergency flashers on. Wave when you do.

wait a minute. Reports of crazy driving, crossed the center line, severely injured an innocent driver, struck another vehicle getting to that point, and no arrest? None of that is at least a misdemeanor? Who is that driver related to?

They said it’s still under investigation. We shouldn’t jump to conclusion, at this time.

Sounds like the Sierra had a downgraded operator plugged into the interface.

It’s probably most accurate to say no arrest yet.
Law enforcement knows who she is and where she is.
They will also have access to more information than was printed here.

Correct me if I’m wrong but if the PD arrests or holds her in custody and she’s admitted to the hospital doesn’t the City pay the hospital bills? Perhaps that’s why there’s no arrests?

Out of state plates. Hmm, no possibility of disappearing.

No arrests? How is that possible? So many people called in the moron in the Sierra. Shameful.

I have a real problem with jackass drivers driving all over the road for one reason or another. It seems that they are generally intoxicated and can’t control their vehicles. The Denali driver is a good example of that. I pray that the woman who was severely injured and the other woman will be fine. The Hyundai driver is lucky to be alive. Pot packaging materials from the Denali with out of state plates was making a drug run. Fill the Denali with the drugs and weave their way home. Just a stupid A–hole!

Humboldt Emerald Triangle is owned by “Chicago Jon” real name Uonan Uonan. Looks like after the bust a couple years ago they’re still in business.

They have the exact same logo, DCC website lists them as still having their license revoked. https://search.cannabis.ca.gov/results?searchQuery=humboldt%20emerald%20triangle

IMHO: WOW.

Interesting:

Read this article: https://humboldtgov.org/m/newsflash/home/detail/5438

Portion of article:

As a result of the search warrants, the following items were seized for asset forfeiture purposes:

— One seized assest was a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 ‘Black Widow Edition’
— LEO’s report Denali is actually a GMC Sierra truck with a “Black Widow” upgrade

— Is this the vehicle involved in the accident ???
— Wonder who ‘owns’ it ?
— What happened to the court cases ???

John Chiv also had some articles on his court cases.

Dont jump to conclusions. They dont have all the facts yet. You dont know anything about either driver, so maybe dont assume someone is a bad person who deserves to be arrested. Accidents happen.

In general, a good philosophy; however, the fact of several calls reporting this vehicle weaving dangerously, driving erratically, etc., for minutes before the crash leads one to believe the person should not have been behind the wheel at all. Possibly, it was another large black GMC truck that was reported, and it disappeared; and just when it would have gotten to the far end of town, another driver of the same type of vehicle, unable to stay in her own lane, appeared and drove into oncoming traffic, nearly killing the driver.
I will keep that consideration in mind!

N/a, you seem very invested in defending this person. Driving so recklessly that you put others in danger is indefensible. Sometimes people just need to take responsibility for doing terrible things. No one was holding her at gun point, forcing her to drive like a maniac so, it’s all on her.

‘Under investigation’ should have been the lead, not the VERY FINAL SENTENCE’, using damning words and photos, emphasizing ‘black widow package’ insinuates ‘killer’, ‘reckless’ insinuates intentional and without care for consequences, including *numerous* photos of empty cannabis containers insinuates the driver was intoxicated. I hope all parties heal fully and that the driver sues law enforcement, kymkemp and redheaded black belt for libel.

Kym Kemp your platform is toxic and your “journalism” is reckless. Make this right. This was in fact a medical issue. The owner of the vehicle and previous owner of the jars was not involved in the crash.
