McKinleyville Intersection Getting a Mural Makeover Later This Month

Press release from the Humboldt County Department of Public Works:

The Humboldt County Department of Public Works is pleased to announce the McKinleyville Community Street Art Project will begin on Friday, June 26.

This project is collaborative effort in partnership with the McKinleyville Municipal Advisory Committee’s Subcommittee for Active Transportation, Humboldt County Public Works and Sea Goat Farmstand & Folk School that aims to beautify the intersection of Hiller Road and McKinleyville Avenue while celebrating local culture, community identity and active transportation.

“We are excited to bring this community-driven art project to McKinleyville,” said Humboldt County Fifth District Supervisor Steve Madrone. “This project is about more than creating public art. It’s about bringing people together, enhancing a highly visible community intersection and creating something that residents and visitors can enjoy. I would like to thank everyone who helped bring this project to life.”

What to Expect

Work on the mural is anticipated to take place Friday, June 26, through Sunday, June 28.

With support from project volunteers and coordinators, local artists Sam Jones and Ben Goulart will lead the installation of a community street mural that reflects the character, creativity and spirit of the McKinleyville community.

To ensure the safety of the artists, volunteers and the traveling public, traffic control will be in place near Hiller Road and McKinleyville Avenue for the duration of the project. Motorists are asked to drive cautiously, watch out for workers, volunteers and pedestrians, and follow all directions and traffic control instructions in the project area.

The McKinleyville Community Street Art Project is made possible through grant funding from the McKinleyville Area Fund and generous support from community donations, with Sea Goat Farmstand & Folk School serving as fiscal sponsor and mural project coordinator. Paint for this project was donated by McKinleyville Ace Hardware. The Humboldt County Department of Public Works and all project partners would like to especially thank these organizations and individuals for helping make this community vision a reality.

IMHO:

So… they are going to er… ‘paint’ the street ?
You mean apply rain-slick toxic chemicals to the asphalt ?

If so… good go. Aquatic creatures will love it !

Oh c’mon Realist. You don’t see what a huge asset this will be for the community? Eureka has painted murals on everything that doesn’t move and look at what a happy prosperous place it is. They’re even getting ready to spend millions on yet another “Homeless” gathering area.

It sounds like this is funded by a mix of grants and private donations. I didn’t see it mentioned who the grant source was, so it may be some public entity like the state or it could be another private source.

If you know of private donations that are available and able to cover the costs of the county bus system you should let the county government know about them
