The Eureka Police Department reports officers are on scene of the crash and are asking drivers to avoid the area while emergency crews respond. Fire trucks and multiple police units have been dispatched.
Caltrans reports that “both northbound lanes on Broadway (U.S. 101) north of Herrick Avenue in Eureka are FULLY CLOSED due to a traffic collision. Currently there is no estimated time of reopening.”
Multiple people called in before the crash stating that a black Denali with out of state plates was driving erratically.
Traffic monitoring through QuickMap shows southbound lanes south of Allard Avenue are also heavily impacted, with vehicles moving very slowly or stopped as congestion builds around the incident.
Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.
UPDATE 2:03 p.m.: Southbound traffic is squeezing around the crash but traffic is still backed up in both directions. Avoid the area if at all possible. Video and photo by Ryan Hutson.

Emergency crews have begun clearing the roadway, though the damaged vehicle remained blocking the northbound lane as of the latest report. A tow truck was en route to remove the vehicle while investigators continued examining the scene.
Officials are also looking into a report that a blue pickup — possibly a GMC or an older Ford F-250 — may have been struck or sideswiped somewhere between the mall area and the crash location.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional details are expected as authorities continue evaluating the scene and reviewing evidence.

First, I would like to say that I hope no one was seriously injured or killed in that traffic collision. The small Hyundai is no match for a big Denali. The Denali driver must have had a medical issue, on drugs, etc., to be driving erratically. With out of state plates my guess is a drug runner or just not paying attention.
What state is that? It looks like Louisiana, but I don’t think so.
Sometimes it’s doesn’t have to be an issue of any kind … unfortunately, sometimes, people just should not be behind the wheel. Does this Denali driver even possess a license (with a nice rig like that, you’d think so, but one never knows anymore, didn’t a teenager just wreck not too long ago)?
Ready the article please. People called in to report the Denali was driving erratically and had OUT OF STATE LICENSE PLATES but did not say what state. Hope this clears in up a little better for you.
People driving erratically through eureka is common place.
And your point?
They need to be held accountable. Unfortunately, our society and political class are obsessed with orange man bad and other nonsense instead of doing their jobs and actually protecting people.
Are you actually saying that pedo orange man and pedo Pam are “nonsense” and less important that Humboldt traffic? WTF?
She almost hit me. This was beyond erratic driving.
She?
How old? Did she look like she was distressed?
Accidents like this can cost us all money too.
AI’s reponse concerning nearby car accidents affecting your inurance rate.
Question: Do the occurrence of car accidents in your area affect car insurance rates in your area?
Answer: Yes, the frequency of car accidents in your specific area significantly impacts your car insurance rates. Insurers use ZIP code-level data to analyze local risk factors—such as high traffic density, theft rates, and accident frequency—meaning if you live in a high-accident area, you will likely pay higher premiums.
She almost hit me head on going the wrong way down Broadway. I swerved and laid on my horn. She almost hit a couple other cars when she switched back into the the correct lanes. Either drugs alcohol or a mental break. Hope everyone recovers from the accident
Of course, i hope the Hyundai driver recovers completely and sues the other… and i hope the GMC driver recovers from her slight injuries as she is charged with all the appropriate crimes.
Remember a few months back, a crazed young woman blazed at high speeds from Fortuna to around Leon’s/Fiesta Cafe in Eureka. She crashed and burned, and died at the scene. (Which is a horribly high price to pay for her behavior, which could have caused the same horror to others.) But the bummer was the massive number of online commenters whose attitude was, “Don’t blame her; she was upset! You don’t know what she might have been going through… AND… she was young and very beautiful, and nice, too!” Which freaked me out, the idea that the same exact behavior, if exhibited by a crusty old guy, would have been roundly called out and condemned; i’m sure the majority would have said he got what he deserved. But a beautiful young woman– NO! Never could she do any wrong. She was precious and perfect, and i need to shut my mouth!
First, I hope the driving of the Hyundai is ok.
Guy in the truck can FOAD.
UNPOPULAR OPINION, but we as a society are focusing on the wrong things.
Our obsession with guns (while ignoring highest statistical root causes like inner city gang violence) needs to be set aside while we focus on the real killers:
Assholes who drive poorly.
I am hard pressed to drive 5 miles to work these days without some inconsiderate clown raging at me for not driving 90, or some equally stupid bozo getting made because they merge on the freeway going 50. Hilarious how people in a hurry always have time to pull over and fist fight.
If we are going to regulate anything, we need to start with driving and vehicles.
First order of business: DRAMATICALLY ramp up enforcement and especially PENALTIES for speeding, excessive lane hopping, and generally reckless driving. 1-2-3 process: Warning, suspension, permanent revocation of driving PRIVILEGES. I say it in caps because it is a PRIVILEGE not a right like some other highly regulated things… If you are caught driving with suspended or revoked privileges, you sit in jail for 1 year.
Next, we have too many assholes poorly driving large, fast passenger trucks. New rule: If you are not hauling something, you cannot drive a truck. ESPECIALLY if you drive a truck simply to feel tough and bully people because you have an inflated sense of self importance and want to be firsts to the next stop light or group of slower traffic.
Finally, phones. My phone knows when I am driving and even asks to use driving mode. Phone manufacturers can easily program a verification system to allow passengers to use their phones, but prevent drivers from accessing anything other than navigation and emergency phone use.
Are these authoritarian ways of dealing with seemingly basic issues?
Yes.
But we clearly lack enough intelligenct people to responsibly use large fast vehicles safely. People are always screaming about safety issues in society, well, maybe we should focus on the largest killers in this country. Aside from heart disease and obesity of course.
ETA “she” as driver of the GMC.
