Two older recreational vehicles were fully involved in a fire Friday afternoon at 10000 Surprise Valley Road near Comptche in Mendocino County, with an initial threat to surrounding vegetation, according to scanner traffic.

The fire, dubbed the Surprise Incident, was reported around 1:34 p.m. Cal Fire responded with air support, hand crews and dozers. The first unit on scene reported no extension to wildland, though a threat remained. Additional resources were subsequently cancelled as crews on scene and those already en route were expected to handle the fire.

Cal Fire air attack was also reported on scene. A tanker returned to base still loaded, suggesting crews were able to manage the fire without deploying its retardant. The cause of the fire was not immediately available.

These “Surprise” fires keep happening. These days there’s a lot of fires that just happen or we don’t always hear the cause of the fire. The majority are caused by people. Thankful we have CalFire and the Air Attack close by to quickly respond.
