James Edward Shinn
James Edward Shinn
Born Jan. 13, 1968, passed away Sept. 6, 2025. Jim grew up in Honeydew on the Shinn Ranch. He helped with the sheep and had his own flock of Suffolks which he showed at the Humboldt County Fair while in 4-H.
Jim attended grade school in Petrolia and high school in Ferndale where he played football for the Wildcats. He graduated in 1986.
He lived in the Mattole Valley most of his life doing many different jobs, including commercial fishing, construction and wood cutting. Fishing and hunting were his main hobbies, but being a jokester was his favorite.
He was preceded in death by, his father Don Shinn, daughter Lisa Shinn, brothers Rex Shinn and Luke Mullins.
He is survived by his mother Betsy Mullins (Greg), sister Lindsey Mullins, son Lee Shinn and daughter Samantha Hampton.
Thank you to Robin Chambers, Zach Davis, Tom Carpenter, Margret Cook, Jerry Johnson and Hospice workers for the kindness you showed Jim in the last part of his life.
I gave you life and you chose to live it the way you wanted. It was so sad and very hard to watch meth take your health and then your life. Rest in peace Jim, you are loved and missed.

Samantha never got to meet her daddy. He would have adored her, but I had to keep her away from the monster that is meth. I loved Jim so much, he was such a good guy when sober. Betsy is the sweetest woman I’ve ever met. I wish the family, including our dear daughter peace.
