Charlie Moon and the Chinese Expulsion from Humboldt County, Highlights from the Willow Creek – China Flat Museum
Tucked along the banks of the Trinity River, the Willow Creek – China Flat Museum has always been a quiet treasure — a place where old photographs, weathered tools, and the echoes of early settlers offer a glimpse into Humboldt County’s layered past. But this year, something new is stirring behind its historic walls. After a year of transformation led by a newly energized Board of Directors, the museum is stepping into the 2025 season with fresh exhibits, bigger ambitions, and an invitation for the community to rediscover the stories that shaped the region.

On Saturday, the museum will throw open its doors for a festive Opening Day celebration, unveiling displays that bring new voices and long-overlooked histories into the spotlight. Visitors can expect activities for all ages, a newly expanded bookstore, and first looks at exhibits that tell, for the first time, the harrowing and heroic stories of the area’s early Chinese immigrants and the explorers who mapped the rugged landscapes of Northern California.
For the next few days, we’ll be featuring some of the stories the museum has to tell. Today, information on the Chinese expulsion from Humboldt County and Charlie Moon.

Chinese immigrants in the nineteenth century faced much discrimination from residents in Humboldt County, as well as throughout the entire United States. Early racism and stereotyping by fellow miners and union leaders led to job exclusion and legislation against the Chinese. Much of this was fueled by the idea that Chinese immigrants were taking jobs from whites. Nonetheless, large groups of Chinese were living and working throughout all settled parts of Humboldt and Trinity Counties. So much so that there were Chinatowns in most all settlements, in which opium dens, taverns, and brothels were common.

In 1885, a Eureka city councilman was shot and killed by a Chinese gambler in Eureka. Angry whites promptly compelled all of the coastal Chinese to depart for San Francisco by boat, leaving only a few of their countrymen remaining in the hills of Humboldt County. Charlie Moon was one of these few.
The Charlie Moon story can be found in
‘Traveling the Trinity Highway’ by Ben Bennion & Jerry Rohde [Image courtesy of the Willow Creek – China Flat Museum from the Clarke Museum Special Collection]Charlie Moon left his home in China when he was 11, traveling in the hold of a ship until he reached San Francisco. He soon headed north with his brother and some other men who planned to work at the Klamath River mines. Believing that he was too young and small to work with them, the group left Charlie in Arcata, where he got a job cleaning up burned houses.
Then Tom Bair came along, taking Charlie to his Maple Creek ranch, where he learned to cook, keep a vegetable garden, and do other work. Charlie had firmly established himself at Bair’s second ranch, on Redwood Creek when, in 1885, a posse of 10 vigilantes from the coast came for him. Boldly, Tom Bair stood up to the posse claiming they would have to come through him and his shotgun to take Charlie Moon.
Charlie remained at the ranch for many, many years. He married Minnie, a local Chilula woman and raised a large family. He was one of the very few Chinese immigrants who remained a resident of Humboldt County after the expulsion of 1885.

Just like modern day immigrants the 19th century Chinese were doing hard, dirty dangerous and/or menial jobs that most whites wouldn’t do — and just like today they were scapegoated and discriminated against by stupid, lazy, ignorant white people.
racist much?
You?
Yes, many of the comments directed at immigrants are racist.
WRONG TBT Illegal is a problem !!!! Immigration is not !!!!
In reality there was a fierce competition between Irish immigrants and Chinese immigrants for jobs. That was a lot of the source of violence. It’s only ignorant that recast history to suit their current personal spin that non-white people were doing jobs that whiite people wouldn’t. Wasn’t true then like its not true now. Both groups were used to get cheap labor.
Ethnic violence is a constant in the world. Everywhere. To wallow in delusion thay it only applies here is only self indulgent.

I have a fair trade for you. How about we deport all the white screeching liberals, who hire the illegals as their landscapers and maids on the cheap, to Mexico and allow our brothers and sisters from Mexico, without criminal records, to remain here. Sounds good to me. Where should we get started. Hmmmm, Arcata goes first with the ghost white raging grannies, originally from Santa Barbara of course, at the top of the list. They can rage in Mexico at Sheinbaum the President and the Cartels. They won’t be raging very long……they be sitting in a desert penitentiary for a decade or three eating beans seven days a week while still mumbling about Trump and Hillary.
I like your idea. Unlike your average white liberal the average family coming here from Mexico LEGALLY are good hard working honest family orented people. Liberals on the other hand think they are above doing manual labor.
I will bet you none of them were illegal immigrants.
One should examine the historical context of immigration laws and how they changed over time before making such a statement.
Any ideology that refuses to acknowledge that any ethnicity uses whatever tools it can use, including especially government, to promote its own well-being is barking at the moon. It’s a clear inability to know what is real and what is not. It’s especially idiotic in a country that has a clear and recent history to see.
If liberals really found racism objectionable, they would be careful not to assign racism to one race but would attack the issue from every side. Not just from their own agenda.
The Irish got the same welcome and were some of the first slaves in the colonial US when the British ran things.
Later on the Irish were in the same position in society as the Chinese aka not wanted or welcome doing the same jobs so there goes your skin color narrative.
That’s an equally oversimplification as Truth Be Told’s narrative.
Yes, the Irish and other immigrant groups were exploited and discriminated against but only the Chinese were systematically burned out of their homes, driven out of town and banned from further immigration (Chinese Exclusion Act, 1882) — with the Irish prominently featured in anti-Chinese agitation (e.g., Denis Kearney).
It’s pure gas lighting and a weak attempt at revisionist history for the “yeah buts” and “what abouts” to pretend the Chinese weren’t singled out for violent and virulently racist attacks.
Truth be told…. Nothing has changed.
Unfortunately there are still socially inept mean spirited individuals who pack, up prey on certain groups with negative consequences for all. Thank you Tom Bair for doing the right (christian) thing taking in, providing for young Charlie Moon and protecting him from the evil pack.
So were a lot of other immigrants subjected to prejudice. Poles, Italians, Portuguese, Slavs , Mexicans,Jews and Protestant sects.Nowadays its mostly directed at Jews, thanks to the far left lunatics, who from the other side of their mouths preach dei. I went to school with Pamela Moon, one of the most beautiful and demur ladies ever to grow up in Eureka. Her Chinese and Indian heritage was unique.
Move to Jefferson City, MO if you want almost everyone to agree with that
Is Bair Rd named after Tom Bair?
Yes. His ranch was along the route, and connected over the hill to Fort Gaston in Hoopa.
Maybe. But maybe he was just your average, run-of-mill independent sob who protects his own. Charlie Moon worked for him.
Reality is we make heros and villains out of history based on mostly our own biases. Study to understand context is usually too much work Christianity had nothing to do with categorizing either.
There weren’t many lazy whites back then. This area was booming, to the point of needing more labor. That’s why the Chinese were here. Not because the whites were lazy.
But yes, in the end they were railroaded.
How sad it is that you view the rule of law as such , when in reality most people do not have a problem with others coming to our country as long as they follow the process set up for them to do so legally . Most of the problems people have with those that do not follow these processes are varied however they consist of main points , they would not meet the requirements if they followed the process , which means they do not qualify to come here . They jumped the line , the government sets limits on the number of people from the different nations that we can accept per year in order to ensure that those that do come here can have the life they wish , when people do not flow this process it reduces the numbers we can accept and over loads our resources .
The comment you made about skin color being related to jobs certain people do not wish to do is racist and offensive . Look at the construction trades and how licensed contractors are having to contend with illegal labor . How many dry wall contractors or roofing or framing contractors can compete and still provide respectable living wage jobs without having to cut corners in order to compete with those who hire illegal labor ? The blue collar jobs have always been the jobs of the middle class and while some migrant labor still stays in the fields the majority come to backfill blue collar jobs that are only not filled by the middle class do to deflated labor prices brought on by illegal labor
Wrong. It is the availability of illegal immigrant labor that has allowed compensation and conditions to be abysmal in many jobs.
What percentage of minors were white? Of course the majority of them.
What a disgustingly racist way to end your post.
I thought the local Moon Family was Native American. Are they descendants of Charlie ???
Yes
It says Moon married a local Chilula woman. I believe the Chilula were one of the many groups of Yurok peoples inhabiting the redwood creek area.
Wrong Chilula is a tribe of over 18 villages from maple creek to the mouth of redwood creek.
Chilula, Bald Hills Indians, whose dialect was closest to the Hoopa Language. Most survivors of the attempt to annihilate the tribe were sent to Hoopa, or they migrated here for safety on their own, as we were already historically well established with each other and had families married into each other’s tribes.
Many of us Hoopa today have Chilula ancestry. I am one of them, as well as being a descendant of Charlie Moon.
Every comment on here about illegals are different than immigrants. Liberals are the laziest mooching whiners who should be deported to Mexico too. Very simply, you are the bad people in History. You are the racists that allow differences to turn into hate and dehumanization of people. Trumps approcal
is 39%. In the World it’s probably just the dictators who support him so maybe 10-20%. The rest of us see the fascism and racism, speeding towards us.
I am approaching 80 years old. I worked many hard jobs, and worked all of my working years. Signed–Lazy mooching Liberal.
That Tom Bair fellow, he was a good man.
Chinese miners WERE taking jobs or competing with equal class European miners.
just like todays immigrants took over labor in the weed scene…
if we are to feel so bad about Chinese exclusion, then let them loose in modern times on Indian country again with suction dredges… 0k?
we can’t have the “poor Chinese miner” narrative and the “land back” poor Indian narrative at the same time.
so the left wants hydraulic mining?
so the left wants cheap labor?
so the left want international capitalism and not tariffs?
America was not founded for the Chinese immigrant, it was founded by and for European immigrants.
the the left blames us for it because we all know it’s true
