Revisiting the Legacy of ‘Murder Mountain’ in Humboldt County
Humboldt County, with its sprawling forests and remote communities, has earned a reputation that’s as much about its natural beauty as it is about its darker undercurrents. The 2018 Murder Mountain documentary brought national attention to the area’s hidden side, exposing a chilling history of missing persons, violence, and the seedy underworld tied to the marijuana industry.
In a new video, Tyler Oliveira revisits the story of Murder Mountain, offering a closer look at the unsolved disappearances and the eerie truths that continue to haunt the region. The video delves deeper into the mysterious death of Garret Rodriguez and other chilling cases that the original documentary brought to light.
While Murder Mountain helped raise awareness, Oliveira’s investigation adds new insights and perspectives, highlighting how the past still reverberates in Humboldt County today. As the legacy of violence and mystery continues to shape the region, questions remain about how much of the dark history still lingers beneath the surface.

Gee whiz. I wonder if he’s going to tell the unfiltered truth this time, or if it will be another sensationalized docudrama.
https://youtu.be/o6dAkkqE5XE
That was one of the rougher areas for sure. There was definitely a dark side that was always present. The green rush being the most out of control. That really is a very poor example of a average pot grower. Most kept their head down, and nose clean because who needs trouble. And out of sight was always best.
,… Did you say nose clean? ?
Most of the instances of extreme punishment taken by the growers were done by the out of country citizens and organizations that are taking advantage of the climate and geography available in areas of our state. It’s a little unfair to brand smaller family or independent people who are guilty of just trying to support their family and stay off of government support, even if it’s illegal it’s like the Moonshine industry in the south.
The death of Garret Rodriguez wasn’t mysterious. He was killed by Quinton Lenig. When the AP8 had their meeting with Lenig, they convinced him to give up the location of the body. If they hadn’t, it would likely still not have been found. Unfortunately, the methods of the AP8 tainted the information, thus no prosecution. No mystery.
I regret that I watched this trash. These guys are pieces of shit and that was one of the worst styles of video I’ve ever seen. As for the content…… It’s too big of a subject.
Bum fight vibes. Why the hell isn’t there a shelter it’s the middle of winter. These people they clearly have mental health issues and are unable to care for themselves. What is happening to the affordable housing effort in So hum. They have the power from PG and E for a giant indoor but this is what the streets look like?
Humboldt has always been about 40 years behind the rest of modern society. And many like it that way. For some, in days past heading to Santa Rosa or Redding for say, holiday shopping was a pilgrimage and a sign of affluence. And when some of that affluence originated right here, it wasn’t always spent where it could have done the most public good. New cars, power toys and nice dinners at restaurants are good for business. So is healthcare and shelters, libraries, internet access and food pantries full of local grown items that don’t require government funding to stay alive are good for the people.
My grandmother and grandfather, who I lived with, would go down to the City to “shop for my school clothes” with me. Which was fun for me, but I think it was mostly for my grandmother, a cultured lady, who just needed a real culture fix every so often and San Francisco fit that bill. My grandfather just liked to travel so it worked for him as well. Though he was just as happy to drive up 299 to Burnt Ranch or Weaverville.
Of course, in those days it took a lot longer to get there and Grandpa would always take HWY 1 back. I was a very lucky kid.
It being reposted @ RHBB is a just another RHBB facepalm moment.
I wondered but I also see that it might be important for people to know how the area is being portrayed to those who know very little or nothing of the area. Well over 2 million views on a video that was posted only 5 days ago is a lot.
Is anyone else surprised no one opened a ‘Murder Mountain’ tourist attraction in Garberville, selling merch, maps and tours or ever a ‘Murder Mountain’ weed dispensary?
It’s not as funny as Dinsmore Store’s “Who said pigs can’t fly and money doesn’t grow on trees?” Speaking of which, I need to find a couple to send to a friend.
In the first few minutes there were multiple falsehoods. Just another bad video about the PAST in Humboldt. Things are pretty danged tame now. Like we need this for PR? Total BS.
I bet it wasn’t even watched by Lisa.
If it was, and then reposted…Holy shit.
Incredibly poor reporting, I mean reposting.
Tyler is a fraud.
He tried so hard to have his vehicle broken into while in Oakland but couldn’t get it done, even leaving high end items on his dashboard.
Fuck Tyler and promoting his videos.
The only question is why is Tyler being reposted here.
Here, see for yourself:
https://youtu.be/vQV_uFY_snw?si=bAqxXKh-TjhbCVuC
Thank you for posting this. This link should be the real story here not the poorly constructed “documentary.” It is fabricated entertainment.
https://youtu.be/vQV_uFY_snw?si=bAqxXKh-TjhbCVuC
Really, with respect to Lisa, her comments on the fakumentery are ugh….
As the legacy of violence and mystery continues to shape the region…
Really?
Art, I’m pretty sure I know you (perhaps I’m wrong), and if you are who I think you are, you don’t have any real association with AP or Murder Mountain, aka Rancho for those of us that actually grew up on the east side.
While I think this is not really an investigative piece, and like much on YouTube, is for entertainment purposes, those people showed exist and those things can be true about the weed industry. Do I think this is a true representation of the weed industry in SoHum or even MM? No, absolutely not. Neither was the MM documentary from what I’ve heard as I have never watched it. I was there for some of the filming of MM back when the producers were saying it was a documentary about how prop 64 impacted the small farmers, but even then, I had my suspicions that they’d screw up a true representation of this area, or at the minimum, take the most sensationalized and darkest faucets of it and exploit it. From everything I’ve heard, that’s exactly what they did.
Regardless, this is in our cannabis section because it is purported to be about the weed industry in our region and references what is likely the biggest pop culture reference to our area. While I do know many of the people in the video, the producers didn’t even go to MM (tip, AP is not MM) nor did they capture the true essence of the culture here or dig into MM’s claims.
We posted this because it is about our area, and some people want to see this much like people wanted to see MM. You clearly don’t, which is fine, scroll on by, just like I chose not to watch MM, and could probably have done without seeing this YT video.
While I appreciate you sharing the other videos saying that Tyler’s “investigative practices” have come under scrutiny, I don’t appreciate waking up to numerous comments referring to me and doing my job by posting this as stupid.
We all have likes and dislikes, and you can curate your watching/reading/listening content to your preference, Kym curates this site’s content. When I’m told to post something bc it may be of interest to our readers, I do my job.
Have a great day.
So as long as it’s “about your area”, no matter how untrue or inaccurate, your saying your obliged to post it with custom niceties?
Nah.
And you may know who I am, but you don’t know my history in that area, nor must I share it with to make the point that posting Tyler O videos is a stupid decision for a wannabe reputable news source.
I’m not obligated to post anything beyond what this site’s owner requests, regardless of the topic. My point is that this is an area and industry I know well. While I don’t agree with the video production, I do know many of the people involved and the stories they share. Even though I don’t think the video is investigative or a full representation of the industry or region, those are real people expressing their own perspectives and experiences.
You’re welcome to share your opinion about the video and have provided helpful context about Tyler’s reporting. However, repeatedly criticizing our decision to post it simply because you don’t see value in it is frustrating.
If there’s something factually inaccurate in the video, by all means, point it out. But continually complaining about our editorial choices doesn’t add much to the conversation and just makes you look like whiner.
Please explain the specific value you found in it, that I did not.
Please don’t be general or vague.
Art, nobody owes you anything here. Your statements are generalized and vague as well. Come ON.
Art, lay off Lisa. I told her to post the piece and if she was willing to throw me under the bus, I am pretty sure she would have said she wasn’t thrilled about it. But she did it because I pay her.
And I happen to think the stories about our area as they are fabricated are of interest to our readers. I appreciate your opinion on the piece. BUT you can lay all editorial decisions at my feet and direct your opinions about the intellect and morality of posting it towards me. Any towards Lisa from now on will be removed. But have at me, I don’t mind.
Sure.
I would have thunk that you would have watched it, and you would know the innacuracies, to have made the editorial decision to post it.
It seems yet again that your hoping for volunteers to step in and correct mistakes that you paid for and posted as “news”?
Wouldn’t it just be easier to not post from known-shitty-ass sources?
https://www.npr.org/2024/09/20/nx-s1-5112682/springfield-influencers-haitian-immigrants-social-media-trump
How many reputable news sites in Ohio reported on Tyler fakumentering Springfield simply because it was “about the area” (and dogs and cats and MAGA)?
None.
Let alone the wording that accompanied this post, you make Tyler seem dreamy ?
Sometimes it’s good to watch stuff you don’t like so you you can learn about it. MM could have been ok if it was half as long, and just stuck to the Rodriguez case instead of fictionalizing the “Humboldt backstory” with the fake weed deal, the tweaker squatter in Briceland. It was hard to watch MM past the absolutely terrible first episode, but I was glad I did in the end. The first episode is 100% about trying to portray a tragic mental health/bad decision into some creepy murder/disappearance that nobody suspected. The Petrolia woman’s remains were found prior to the shows airing, and were consistent with her trying to “go for a swim” as the last witness heard her say. It was during a huge storm in January. She was known to display some pretty radical bipolar behavior, so it might have been hard to tell if it was just talk or a serious plan.
…but seeing the title art for that Humboldt hit piece, I can’t bring myself to hit play!
Or, as a reporter, don’t post shit ass sources.
There is not time enough in life to know good news and bad news, understand who is providing it and fact check for all the shit postings of fake news that reporters should have known better anyway.
Look, they didn’t do a job, and now they want me to volunteer time and sanity to do it for them.
Nobody is asking you to do anything, Art. You are the one spending precious minutes of life growling at us in the comment section. You do you but I’d move on.
I don’t see them using it as a source, I seem them reporting: “hey look at this dumb shit they’re saying about us”.
Calling this “stupid” only points three fingers back at you. RRHB is a gem and we’re lucky to have them! YOU? Not so much….
I’m going to say THANK YOU LISA for all the hard work you do to keep us informed even if it isn’t a popular piece. Journalists are a treasure and we need to support them, no matter if we agree or not. FREE SPEECH is threatened right now, the FREE PRESS is also. Keep up the good work!
Go complain to Tyler then. Leave a comment on his channel. Also, if you don’t like RHBB writing, once again we’ll remind you that you are free and clear to go start up your own page.
If you’d follow your own advice, I guess your comment should be emailed to me privately, as critical dialog is unwelcome here.
Start a website too.

Shorts, for short minded viewers.
Lisa, it was incredibly stupid to post Tyler once. But twice?
? ? ? ? ?
Your obsession with telling RHBB what they can and can’t post on their own website makes you the “short minded” person
Saying it’s a stupid decision is only that.
They do what they want here.
Your obsession with kissing feet and stroking ego is amazing.
Easy now. They’re married. Just keeping it real
If that’s true, then he’s making it personal, I get it now.
Best to him. Really.
Interesting how free promotion pays off.
This anti-vax film was made by RFK jr and promoted for free here on this website some 6 and 8 years ago…
How’s that for short-minded?
RFK jr.
I wish he woulda gone over to Covelo….
Tyler Oliveira is one of, if not the worst you-tubers out there. Misinformation, outright lying and certainly no, I mean, no fact-checking.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=o6dAkkqE5XE
I Investigated the Biggest Scumbag on YouTube.
How about when he chased MAGA schizophrenia to Ohio to exploit the MAGA racism with the Haitians eating dogs and cats lies?
Incredible that “reporters” don’t know what they are reposting and still consider it newsworthy.
?
Southern Humboldt has had several serial killers set up shop over the years, which shouldn’t surprise anyone as incredibly creepy as most SoHum “men” are. Ever listen to KMUD? (And those on the air are supposedly the high functioning ones.)
most modern women are incredibly repulsive creatures, no matter where they reside, not all, but most of them.
FFS, Both of you. Lumping groups of people together and acting like you know them and that there isn’t a vast variety and nuance in humanity is troubling at best. Stop.
The hate speech directed at local males was posted 20 hrs ago.. and no response from the editor, but 20 minutes after my retort on modern women as a collective whole, here comes the warning notice. ‘Vast variety and nuances in humanity” ? No matter how unique you think you are, a snowflake is still just a snowflake, but I bet they do look prettier through rose colored contacts.
Sorting through the hundreds of comments many of them unpleasant every day is…difficult. And I’m not a perfect human being. I make mistakes. My particular itch is misogyny. Catches my eye for sure. But bigotry towards SoHum males (I have four very varied in my immediate family and none of them fit the description above) should have been caught. Sorry.
Thank you for your honesty, humility , and patiences, and for taking the time to acknowledge the misandrist comment.
Holding both the opinion that women’s value/worth is beyond human measure, and at the same time finding modern women as a collective whole to be incredibly repulsive does not make one a misogynist, nor does one need to be a victim of cognitive dissonance to hold such a view. Extreme caution should be exercised when using personally harmful labels where they are not applicable.
Hmm, calling out a misogynist comment is not labeling someone a misogynist.
And labeling modern women as repulsive is a misogynistic comment. Hopefully, you can expand your awareness to realize that there are rarely entire large categories of people who can be labeled accurately.
It might be helpful if you tried to figure out what was disturbing to you about your idea of modern women.
He’s obviously been rejected by women and has a hate on for them now. He’s only exposing his own need for attention, even if negative.
The fact most of them have a terrible dye job and look like they fell face first into a tackle box. Haha sorry, couldn’t help responding to your last sentence
KMUD is a bunch of volunteers giving up their time to support their community. Its people like you who are so proud of their whiteness that they post about it that should be shamed…
