Continue to Expect One Way Traffic on Hwy 101 at Humboldt/Mendocino County Line

Rough road featureTravelers headed south on Hwy 101 face a bumpy road roughly from just barely north of the Humboldt/Mendocino County line on Hwy 101 to .1 miles north of the Hartsook Inn. Caltrans has a one-way traffic control operation in place due to a slip out in the area.

One “lane” is actually on the uphill slope more on the roadside than on the normal roadway.

According to Caltrans spokesperson, Myles Cochrane, “Motorists should continue to expect one-way traffic control in the area as crews and geotechnical experts monitor conditions and assess repairs. Because conditions have been fluid with the weather, we do not yet have an anticipated timeline to return to two-way traffic.”

We requested information on whether the road might close there and Cochrane told us, “Conditions are subject to change but at this point it’s optimistic.”

Went through there last night. Traffic control has you drive on rhe shoulder along the hill. No problem, as long as the slip-out doesn’t slip out more.

It’s one lane. Sorry. Redwood Curtain.
If only…if only, there was a technique to, like stop traffic coming from one direction, then get the traffic from the other direction to go.
Crazy, I know. But hey we’re racing forward in the future, ya never know what kind of new age stuff they’ll be doin!

FYI, methinks this kind of response is what makes the cranky old lady, cranky.
Get home safely! Also kudos for checking on traffic & road conditions, beforehand.

Back in the day, traveling past Confusion Hill in the winter could get interesting. Shut down to one lane, flag man would give you the ‘go ahead’ and you’d make a ‘run for it’. Was a lot like like ‘Russian Roulette’, if you were lucky you didn’t get nailed by a boulder!

Boy I sure remember Confusion hill. Jan 1st early 90s, closed for 5 days. Fortunately we got thru using Bell Springs before they closed it. That was scary looking and still is when you look across river and see the whole picture.

And the mini vans trying to get thru in the snow. Now when the hwy closes they post up chp and won’t let anyone thru without proof of residency. Which as we know isn’t as simple as it sounds for us off grid folks. My address says laytonville

Decades ago I had a flagger frantically waving us on as he’s looking up the hillside as a big boulder is coming down We just made it through as I see the boulder crash on the pavement in my rear view mirror It was a close call My heart was racing!! Today I don’t think they would take such risks

This sounds very close to where the whole road slipped down the hill during the 1964 flood.
