Press release from the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office:

Today, a Humboldt County jury found Miles Keola Neiva (39) of Fortuna guilty as charged on multiple child sexual assault charges.

In September of 2021, 13-year-old Jane Doe disclosed Neiva had been molesting her for several years.  Neiva, a firefighter, was a trusted family friend who occasionally lived with the family.

Doe bravely testified at trial and gave impactful testimony.

Investigation led by Fortuna Police Department Detective Ryan Richardson uncovered evidence, including suspected child pornography, that corroborated Doe and tended to prove Neiva’s sexual interest in children.  The Child Abuse Services Team (“C.A.S.T.”), and the Northern California Computer Crimes Task Force (NC3TF) further supported the investigation into Neiva’s crimes.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Whitney Timm with assistance from District Attorney Investigator Ryan Hill and Victim Witness Advocate Keosha Chambers.

Judge Greg Elvine-Kreis presided over the trial and is scheduled to sentence Neiva on February 15.  Neiva faces up to 23 years to life in prison.  Zack Curtis represented the defendant.

His photo is now posted on your fb page by commenters as well as in these comments. Can you now update the photo you have of the child’s hand on glass and put HIS photo? I’m fearing because he was a firefighter—and maybe even know him—you might be protecting him.

Wow, what an accusation! Kym herself provided the link to the photo on John Chiv’s website. A little-known fact that keyboard warriors rarely have to deal with is that we cannot simply pull photos from the internet… it’s called plagiarism. We have to have permission to use a photo. We always try to include a booking photo with charges. They are not always available. Sometimes other news sources are able to obtain them elsewhere.

We do not currently have access and permission of use to a photo of the convicted man. If/when we get that permission, we will update the article.

Who do you need permission from?

The person that owns the rights to the photo, usually the photographer. We are able to use photos from public agencies, however, they don’t always make them available. Some press releases from law enforcement agencies include photos, some do not.
Trust me, if we had a photo to use, we would use it.
Mendocino County has an amazing booking photo online source that we can grab from when press releases don’t include a booking photo. We would love it if every law enforcement agency and county had that availability. Unfortunately, they do not.
The photos we use on this site are from our photographers, those sourced from government entities, those sent in from readers that took them, those we’ve obtained permission from the photographer for, those that are shared on media sites with attribution requirements dictated by the photographer, or those we purchase.
I can’t tell you how many times a photo reshared on fb has to be tracked back to the original photographer for permission, or how many times we have a photo we want to use but can’t due to permission issues.

the hand on the glass picture is a disturbing image any way, maybe something less triggering?

It was poignant and brought home the terrible trauma these victims face. It did so without words, because there were no words to describe the pain. But, that doesn’t mean they don’t have a voice.

I remember when you posted that story and photo. The easy way out would have been to ignore the story. I had always appreciated your local news but that action showed me you were a serious journalist. News is news, whether those involved are friend, foe, family, or stranger. You are the go to news source for a pretty big area. Thanks for what you and your team do.

It would be appropriate for you to apologize to Kym for that remark.

Nah. No need. This is the internet. She’s a journalist and has tough skin. I’ve followed her page for decades. And besides: my comment elicited some very helpful and educational information for all to read. It’s laughable you think I should apologize~~~I asked a genuine question in a very appropriate manner. If I can’t do that, then there is a serious problem.

Ridiculous. You stated you did not trust her and suggested she was protecting the pedophile. A good person would apologize because you had no right. Your statement that you won’t apologize because she has a tough skin is very telling because you knew you were trying to hurt her. There was nothing appropriate about your question. You sound like a narcissist.

You’re kidding right? So basically because plagiarism is a thing, and you don’t understand what that is, you basically are saying that the author is trying to protect a child molester? Wow! [edit]

Mustaches are common on firefighters and pervs, he happened to be both so he probably hid the fact that it was a pervstache until now… glad he was caught!!

Really? Where is your evidence that firefighters and child molesters have more mustaches than the general population?

Just look around. The mustache is a common feature in todays firefighters. My neighborhood is loaded w FF and all but one has the shaved head and mustache look. That’s 4 with. 1 without.

Give ,me a break. Suggesting you can tell whether someone is a pedophile by the way they look is nonsensical, unfair, and dangerous.

they dont do anywhere near that extensive a background check, no fingerprints or psych test, no lie detector or anything of the sort to be a firefighter…gotta be vigilant, cant trust someone just because they have a good job…look at the rapist cop in england that was recently busted…

I know growers w fingerprint cards. One has two domestic violence charges and the other is selling real estate and doobage. Background checks only catch those w a standing charge or criminal record.
