Good News: Hopkins Fire–Still Holding East of the Main Eel River, Lots of New Resources on the Ground, and Rain Predicted Next Week

The reasons to be optimistic are threefold–firefighters are still successfully holding Hopkins Fire east of the Main Stem of the Eel River, new resources are pouring into the area, and some rain is predicted next week.
Ward told us that though there was a little “slopover” of the fire on the Zenia Lake Mountain Road near the town of Kettenpom, firefighters are getting a handle on it. He added that although there were news reports elsewhere that the fire had crossed the Main Stem of the Eel River that wasn’t true. Firefighters were keeping flames to the east of there and the fire had not yet crossed into Humboldt County.
The sound of heavy equipment being moved provided background music to the conversation we had with Ward who told us, “Cal Fire Incident Management Team is bringing in a whole team with lots of resources to fight the fire.” He pointed to the sound of heavy equipment as indicative of resources now available.
And, to add to Ward’s good news, according to the National Weather Service, “There is a chance of measurable rain as early as Monday, especially for Del Norte County. Those probabilities increase everywhere on Tuesday. These charts, based on 3 ensemble forecast systems, indicate low chances for rain lingering toward the latter portion of next week as well.”

Still, the fire is continuing to threaten structures and evacuations are in place. The Hopkins and the Elkhorn Fires (as well as others) have burned together and burned into the August Complex. The fire in Trinity County and threatening to mow through Southern Humboldt is now considered part of the largest fire in California history–the August Complex.

We will update here throughout the day as needed.
The Plan:
Firefighters will be trying to push the fire out of the Ruth Valley, protect structures in Kettenpom, and continue keeping the flames east of the Main Stem of the Eel River.
Images from the Fire:
Power came back on this morning. Fire's still out there somewhere – can't tell bc of the falling ash and smoke.

Bless everyone working to save us! Thank you mates from me heart! Yes, bless you!
We depend so much on the professionalism and bravery of first defenders. What would we do without these people who put their very own lives on the line to protect the property of others? A heartfelt thank you to all of you putting your own lives in danger to save the lives of others. May you be protected and may you stay safe. Thank you.
Thank you and yes, bless you! You are our heroes.
The fire not jumping Eel is definitely a good thing. However, this fire can still enter Humboldt without crossing the river. It can still burn north along the Eel all the way up to 36.
Yes, it can. And that is a concern. It isn’t an immediate concern though.
That is my fear. But I don’t think it is likely. I’m trying to manifest containment. My hope is that if it comes close, the ranchers, along with the firefighters, and local construction companies would trench fire lines aside the 36. This article was such a relief to read! Thanks Kim! Thank you firefighter’s! Thanks to all our local hero’s and everyone who is volunteering and pulling resources together. These things are really a community effort, and that is why I love this community! Stay safe. Please lend a hand to those in need if you are capable. These catastrophic event’s are affecting the entire pacific coast! There are so many lives being touched by fires in one way or another. Even the littlest thing can make all the difference to someone in need. Let’s all pull together! Together we stand!!

This map rocks! Shows hot spots and Fire activity with wind overlay.a little activity around the island.
This is great, thank you! It has hot spot info from yesterday late afternoon. Is there some way to update it? This is one I’d like to watch.
Check the box for “Fire Activity” and select “VIIRS 375m”. At the moment the most recent data on the west edge of Hopkins/Elkhorn is 2:36am local time. The satellite makes a few passes each day, and the data may take 2-3 hours to show up on the map. It updates automatically when the data is available (if you refresh your browser). You can also check the “Wind Plot” layer to see current and forecasted wind direction.
Thanks 2020. Great site. I was able to drag map to Red-Salmon area to see what’s going on there.
Fire mappers and US Wildfire Reports keep up to date the best (Fire Mappers now my favorite) but satelites only pass over a couple of times a day so there is a lag time
