[UPDATE 9:11 a.m.] Elkhorn Fire (New Name for Fire Causing Evacuations in Trinity, Humboldt, and Mendocino) Slowed With Cooler Weather

UPDATE Friday: The most recent information is Good News: Hopkins Fire–Still Holding East of the Main Eel River, Lots of New Resources on the Ground, and Rain Predicted Next Week

The Hopkins Fire that is burning south of Ruth and causing evacuations in southwestern Trinity, southeastern Humboldt and northern Mendocino slowed its westward rush yesterday. According to maps from imagery taken right before 7 p.m. yesterday, the fire has not yet moved into Humboldt County.

However, the fire threatens the communities of Ruth, Zenia, and Kettenpom.

With multiple fires burning across the state, there has been some juggling of which fire is being fought by which team. The Hopkins Fire which was earlier considered part of the August Complex is now considered part of the Elkhorn Fire along with several other smaller incidents which have merged.

The agencies fighting the fire which is burning on the Mendocino, Shasta-Trinity and Six Rivers National Forests will now refer to it as the Elkhorn Fire.  “The reported increase in acreage and the reduction in percent contained are the result of the consolidation of all fires merging into one,” InciWeb reports.

The Elkhorn Fire is now considered to be 255,309 acres and 27% contained.

We will update here throughout the day.

The Plan:

UPDATE 9:11 a.m.: We spoke to Cal Fire’s Jeremy Ward, Fire Captain Specialist, who is working out of Alderpoint. He told us that the plan today is for firefighters to work on structure protection in the Kettenpom area while holding the fire south of Peak Road and east of the Main Stem of the Eel River.

Ward noted that last night the fire was still continuing to move at a moderate rate of spread. “There was short range spotting,” he told us, “And they did have some areas of multiple tree torches… .”

He particularly wanted to thank the volunteer fire departments from across the county and Humboldt Bay Fire who are providing a lot of the manpower on the ground in southeastern Humboldt and southwestern Trinity County.

Keep the fire east of Zenia Lake Mountain Road.

The Weather:

Temperatures will only rise into the high seventies for most of the area. Humidity will rise also generally but still drop into the teens in the afternoon which can push the fire to grow. There are light winds predicted. But generally conditions are good.

The Smoke:

Today winds will lighten the smoke and push it southwards, but expect unhealthy levels.

Kym rips! Just a reminder, ash and water form caustic lye. Praying for even a dew but even that small amount will start pitting the paint on your car or any other valuable surface. Wash it off with soap and water.

The advantage of driving $1000 cars which typically come with pre-pitted paint!

I too, salute Queen Kemp !

My 4.20 donation (free the herb!) dropped monthly out of my PayPal acct isn’t significant, but it adds up. And I invite every one of RHBB’s 100,000+ regular readers and 1 million occasional visitors to consider setting up a similar donation schedule.

Love is our true gold. (But $ helps keep the fridge stocked, helpers compensated, and the power on.)

Keep rocking Kym ! May you live long and healthfully.

Better yet, use a leaf blower or other compressed air to just blow it off.

The Red Cross never manned the evac center at Van Duzen but for a couple hours yesterday. I talked to them and there are evac hotel room vouchers available. Supposedly you can hook up with them at Ferndale Fairgrounds. If that doesn’t work call the local office at 707-577-7600 or https://www.redcross.org/local/california/northern-california-coastal.html

Please donate if you can to house our peeps.

Thank you so much for the reliable information. There was so much Panic yesterday based mostly on false information posted on Facebook. Everybody I know that’s heavy into Facebook was more or less hysterical. I heard rumors ranging everywhere from the fire burned down alderpoint and was heading down the hill towards Garberville, Redway. To people insisting there was a mandatory evacuation for all of the 101 corridor between Myers Flat and piercey.. I know around a dozen people that evacuated their homes for no reason and went to Eureka to get hotel rooms. Taking much needed resources away from people that actually needed them.

This was fueled by the Humboldt Sherif, he announced on KMUD live around 2-3pm that it had crossed the Eel river.
So KMUD reported it as fact and people reposted that.

Sheriff was out Burr Valley today letting people know about mandatory evacuations. They were very friendly but told multiple people that the fire was north of black lassic and that you could see flames from swayback ridge. This is absolutely false. Not helpful for folk who are already on edge and may have reluctance trusting law enforcement and government in general. Than you LEO for all that you do but please let people make decisions based on factual information.

Around 2:00 this afternoon I talked with a guy who had just come over the hill from AP. It was still ok but obviously still threatened depending on wind and weather. I think Blocksburg too but didn’t specifically ask.

There are reliable reports that the fire has not yet crossed the main stem Eel. (Would mean everything on the west side is still ok.)

None of my info is first hand, but I think it’s solid.

Kym, is there anything that your supporters can do to get you into an awards program. You deserve more than anyone I know to be honored and awarded, and from doing a small bit of research in awards programs one thing alot of them look for is a site that works in the public service and until you came around we were devoid of timely or in depth news on fires. Just the love being expressed in this thread should be enough to tell a jury that you are much needed and appreciated. I don’t know how these awards programs work but are some of them like the Nobel Peace Prize where people have to submit your name ( I think that’s how it works).

I keep seeing how Lost Coast Journal, or Times Standard win these awards but when it comes to keeping people truly informed about potential threats from fires, which should be considered the most pressing need in these parts in the summer time, they are worthless. We got to get you recognized so you can be eligible or receive grant money so you can get that helicopter I promised you. Or just some more help.

Does anyone know the timeline or what needs to happen with a particular fire in order for evacuation order to be lifted. If the fire stays at a slow growth rate will the far northern evacuation areas up near 36 remain closed?

Dave Kahan

I don’t know the specific criteria but you can likely expect they’ll be conservative about it. Imagine what would hit the fan for them if they let people back in and then had to evacuate all over again.
