Crescent City Father Seriously Injured After Device Explodes While He Picks Up Beach Litter

A Crescent City father is facing a long recovery after an explosive device detonated in his hand.

According to a GoFundMe campaign organized by his daughter, Ashley, Jason Turner was walking along the beach with his girlfriend, Pamala, picking up discarded Fourth of July fireworks and other litter when he picked up what was described as a bomb-like device. The device unexpectedly exploded.

The blast resulted in the loss of one of Jason’s hands. He has already undergone an amputation and is expected to undergo additional surgeries.

An update posted to the fundraiser says doctors have also identified serious eye and ear injuries. According to the family, Jason has metal fragments lodged in his eyes, blood pooling behind his left eye, and a ruptured right eardrum that has left him without hearing in that ear. The family says it is still unknown whether his hearing or vision loss will be permanent.

The accident has also created significant financial uncertainty for the family. The fundraiser describes Jason as the sole provider for a household of seven, including two children who are still in school. Because of the severity of his injuries, he is expected to be unable to work for an extended period.

Funds raised through the campaign will help cover transportation to medical appointments, medications, and hotel expenses for Jason and family members during his treatment and recovery.

“Jason has always been the kind of person who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need,” the GoFundMe states

His daughter thanked supporters in an update, writing, “Thank you everyone for your support. My dad will be going into additional surgeries for his eyes… Thank you for your continuous love and support.”

The incident has transformed what began as a simple act of community service into what looks to be a months-long medical ordeal, with family members now asking for community support as Jason begins what is expected to be a difficult recovery.
