Peter “Pete” William Miller
December 13th, 1972 – May 5th, 2026

Peter “Pete” William Miller, of Laytonville, CA, passed away at 6:00 AM on May 14, 2026, in Ashland, Oregon.  Pete was born on December 13th, 1972, in Ashland, Oregon.

He graduated from Humboldt State University with a B.A. in liberal studies with a focus on German.  He had spent summers working in Alaska processing salmon and considered working there as a tour guide.  Instead Pete ended up staying in Humboldt and later moved to a property he purchased in Laytonville.

Pete loved all kinds of music, from Reggae, to Johnny Cash, to Frank Sinatra.  He was an avid world traveler and would travel without any plans and would always travel off the beaten path.  He loved to hike, camp, read, and listen to music.  He often had KHUM or KMUD playing in the background of his home.

Pete loved animals and had a close bond with his three dogs.

Pete was someone who had close friendships that lasted for decades.  He had friends that traveled from all over the country to spend time with him.  Pete was well loved by his neighbors, his childhood and college friends, and others that he met along the way.

He left this world way too early and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  Rest easy old friend, I know that you are off on many new adventures.

Note: Peter’s death date has been updated to reflect the correct day.

Pete was an old soul, something about him felt already too seasoned for his age. My first memories of him are listening to the radio and reading the newspaper only to disappear into the woods without a word. The song “That’s Life” by Frank Sinatra comes to mind when I think about him. My favorite thing about Pete was his ability to listen to a conversation and interject a clever statement at the just right time—if you weren’t paying attention you might miss it. He was easy to be around, to pass the time, and for a good laugh. Travel on through Pete.

A damn good neighbor and friend! He will be deeply missed. The mountain feels empty without him. I’ll miss seeing him sitting out front of his place reading a book.

A chill poem for my friend Pete:
He rolled through this world like a loose reggae beat,
no map, no hurry, just bare feet on strange streets.
Johnny Cash in one ear, Frank in the other,
campfire smoke curling, three dogs at his feet like brothers.
Pete didn’t chase the finish line or the nine-to-five grind,
he collected sunsets, backroads, and real good times.
Loyal as an old hound, quick with a laugh or a hand,
the kind of friend who shows up from miles across the land.
Some folks aren’t built for the long slow fade—
they burn bright, roam wide, leave a mark that won’t dull.
They’re just passing through this life like a warm summer wind,
touching everything beautiful before they roll on again.
Only the good die young, they say,
and damn if it ain’t true today.
Rest easy, traveler. The music keeps playing
wherever you wandered next. We’ll be listening.
Pete lived exactly the way a lot of us wish we could—free, kind, and full of good tunes and better stories. The world feels a little quieter without those souls.
