[UPDATE 5:49 p.m.: Contained] Smoke From Rekindle Fire Seen on Ridge Between Salmon Creek and Myers Flat

A fire reported shortly after 3 p.m. today is burning on a ridge between the Salmon Creek watershed and Myers Flat.

The fire is believed to be a rekindle of a previous burn in the area, according to reports over the scanner.

Smoke from the incident was visible across the region, including from the home of Redheaded Blackbelt editor Kym Kemp.

ALERTCalifornia camera footage shows a visible smoke column rising from the forested ridge, drifting with the wind across the surrounding terrain.

Red dot indicates where the fire is located.

Red dot on this screenshot of GoogleMaps indicates where the fire is located.

Conditions at the time are around 75 degrees with wind, which can contribute to fire activity, particularly in exposed areas along ridgelines.

The fire appears to be located in steep, heavily wooded terrain southwest of Myers Flat, an area that can be difficult to access.

At this time, there has been no official confirmation of the fire’s size, containment, or resources assigned.

This is a developing situation, and information is based on early reports and observations. Further details will be provided as they become available.

UPDATE 3:22 p.m.: The ranch owner is reporting that the fire is about 3 acres in a grassy area being pushed by the wind. However, he told dispatch that the fire is not outside the control lines they have set up.

UPDATE 3:40 p.m.: The fire is estimated at approximately 4 acres, burning in a mix of grass, brush, and timber. It is currently moving at a moderate rate of spread (MROS), with no reported exposures or immediate hazards.

UPDATE 4:27 p.m.: The report from the Incident Commander speaking over the scanner is that the fire is three to four acres with a potential for 10 acres.
A phone report from this reporter’s son who is on scene but not a firefighter indicates the fire is actively burning with several trees torching as heavy winds push the flames.

The property owners have used heavy equipment to cut a line around roughly 75% of the fire. However, fire activity on the southwest flank is too intense to safely bring equipment in to complete the line.

Firefighters are working that area on foot, pushing south-southwest uphill, while a hose lay is being extended in from the north. A helicopter is overhead and is dropping water. (We have video and will be uploading soon.)

Multiple agencies are on scene, including Salmon Creek Fire and Myers Flat Fire, along with additional departments. An estimated 25 personnel are engaged, supported by four engines and an inmate crew.

UPDATE 4:33 p.m.: Video of the helicopter dropping water by Noel Soucy.

UPDATE 4:52 p.m.: Copter 611 is returning to Rohnerville Station for refueling. Then it will return to the Salmon Fire as this is named.

UPDATE 5:37 p.m.: Good News! Forward progress has been stopped.

UPDATE 5:49 p.m.: Salmon fire is now reported as 100% contained

Choppers are pulling water from the river here in Myers Flat. The fire must be on the south side of Kerr peak, no smoke is visible from the Myers Flat side.

I’ll pump out my PSA again…

Dear SoHum neighbors,

I know it’s just the start of spring, but it’s been a dry winter. If you choose to light a fire, please be extremely careful. Good neighbors don’t negligently endanger their community. Be safe.
