[UPDATE 5:46 p.m.: Remaining Closed] Highway 36 Closed Again at Grizzly Creek Slide After Boulder Hits Vehicle

Road closedHighway 36 is closed this afternoon at the Grizzly [Creek] Bluff slide area in eastern Humboldt County after another rockslide incident forced the shutdown of both lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page.

At about 2 p.m., CHP received a report that a boulder struck a vehicle near mile marker 16.00 on Highway 36, east of Bridgeville. The reporting party indicated they were not requesting an officer response for vehicle damage. Shortly afterward, Caltrans began closing both lanes as slide activity continued in the area.

By 2:20 p.m., CHP officially changed the incident classification from a slide to a full road closure. Multiple agencies, including the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, Fortuna Police Department, and Cal Fire, were notified of the closure.

As of 2:53 p.m., CHP logs indicate additional activity near the slide area, including reports of vehicles nearly involved in traffic collisions and a request for assistance from a Caltrans worker on the east side of the closure.

The road has repeatedly closed in the area as Caltrans battles a massive slide. They have built a berm to catch much of the slide material and it has been working but today the berm is not catching everything

Supervisor Michelle Bushnell states that Caltrans “to clean out the east end of the catchment.”.

There is no estimated time of reopening, according to Caltrans. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

UPDATE 5:46 p.m.: According to the CHP page, Caltrans reported that the road will be closed through the night. Emergency vehicles may enter at their own risk, However, the road will not be cleared throughout the night.

Nice…

Grizzly Bluff is near Ferndale, not Highway 36…

Grizzly Creek is on Highway 36 near mile marker 16.

Article says Grizzly Creek Bluffs on Highway 36. That is not near Ferndale.

Old article says “…NEAR GRIZZLY CREEK BLUFFS…”…

This article says “…AT GRIZZLY BLUFF…”

Again much ado about nothing. Grizzly Bluffs is simply shorthand and acceptable. The article states Hwy 36 and eastern Humboldt.

The other Grizzly Bluffs near Ferndale is on State Route 211. Western Humboldt.
The confusion is not with the article.

I thought we had killed off all the grizzlies in California. So there are no grizzlies anywhere in California? This is now getting quite confusing…

Except the flag. Grizzly front and center. Never understood that one. Are we supposed to be proud of it?

Yes just like the lions in Europa, removing the apex predator from a landmass makes room at the top. Its been done everywhere people could do it.

Nope.

You’re wrong…

Grizzly Bluff near Ferndale is NOT
on State Route 211…

It’s on Grizzly Bluff Road, between Blue Slide Road and the intersection of 211 and/or Waddington Road…

It’s not “The other Grizzly Bluff”…

It’s THE ONLY ‘GRIZZLY BLUFF”

CALTRANS has unofficially dubbed the slide area on Highway 36 at Mile Marker 16+-

“the Grizzly Creek Bluffs Slide”

According to Redwood News’ quote of Cody Long, Resident Engineer with CALTRANS…

Thanks for helping me prove my point.
If CALTRANS has unofficially dubbed it something, RHBB can unofficially name it something. Journalist license.

Holler and stamp your foot all you want but last I looked it still said
Grizzly Bluff.

Throw accuracy to the wind all willy nilly,
and see where it lands…

Last I looked, ‘Grizzly Bluff’ is still located between Ferndale and Rio Dell…

I just remember it as Devils’ Elbow, rather than whatever Grizzly people are getting upended about. It’s a nice spot to have a picnic when the weather is warmer.

Editor,

Correction…

‘HIGHWAY 36 CLOSED AGAIN AT GRIZZLY [CREEK] BLUFF[S] [SLIDE] AFTER BOULDER HITS VEHICLE’

https://www.redwoodnews.tv/local-news/highway-36-slide-update/article_a628fb96-f524-4ef4-ad0e-49058bedf6d0.html

“So this section of highway we’ve been calling the ➡️Grizzly Creek Bluffs Slide.⬅️ There’s been three major slides now in the last two years. Three years. We’re currently dealing with the one that kind of showed itself this winter, starting around December. And it’s closed the highway majorly two times. Blocking both lanes for a few day,” ➡️said Cody Long, Resident Engineer with CalTrans.⬅️

➡️ As long as it’s clear what stretch of Hwy 36 is being referenced — which it is —➡️ Grizzly Bluff slide⬅️ is a defensible, appropriate journalistic choice⬅️
➡️I have heard locals refer to it like that. ⬅️ ➡️ Or even as the bluff slide⬇️

National Register #79000476
Grizzly Bluff School
Grizzly Bluff Road Near Pine Creek School Road
Grizzly Bluff
Built 1871Grizzly Bluff, is located in the Eel River Valley, six miles east of Ferndale, California. Settled in 1853, the community grew to include a number of commercial and public buildings, but of those, only a much altered church and this school remain.
The school building at Grizzly Bluff has achieved a remarkable record: it is recognized as the oldest school building in the county of Humboldt. It operated continuously as the community’s only educational facility from 1871 to 1978. It is the only recognizable link with the early settlement of Grizzly Bluff.
