Driver Crashes Vehicle After Falling Asleep at Wheel in Freshwater

Photos and videos by Ryan Hutson
A Nissan Maxima crashed into an embankment near the intersection of Freshwater Road and Myrtle Avenue just before 11 a.m. today, according to scanner traffic.
Our reporter Ryan Hutson at the scene was told by the California Highway Patrol that the driver of the vehicle fell asleep at the wheel. No injuries were reported, but a mailbox was damaged in the crash.
Please avoid the area while emergency personnel deal with the scene.

Update 11:51 a.m.: Hutson sends us another video from the scene.

I’m glad no one was hurt. Pity about the mailbox; guessing the homeowner will be stuck fixing that.
Thank goodness there was no oncoming traffic! And the victim will probably kick in for the mailbox!
You mean the driver/perpetrator. The victim was the mailbox/homeowner.
Are you assuming the driver is uninsured? Isn’t that the definition of “property damage”?
Check your insurance.
Most people ARE NOT INSURED IF THEY FALL ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL. IT VOIDS THE PART THAT YOU AGREE TO WHEN YOU BUY INSURANCE THAT YOU WILL OPERATE THE VEHICLE SAFELY AND LAWFULLY.
FALLING ASLEEP VOIDS YOUR POLICY
A Nissan Maxima should void your policy
Cops called it an accident
Please stop spreading misinformation
Then hopefully the uninsured motorist addendum covers the sleeping person who is no longer covered by the insured motorist section.
That curve needs a concrete center divider. That could have been fatal. TG it wasn’t. Thank you for the post RHBB.
Flex posts would probably be quite effective, and more forgiving of stupid human tricks. Cheaper too, therefore more likely to get done. Talk to your county supervisor about it.
You would be better talking to CalTrans being on a state highway , and that stretch doesn’t need Carsonites.
Freshwater rd isn’t a state highway
It’s a two lane country road that is really not challenging. Better than most in the county. If it really needs a concrete divider, there would be be no road here that doesn’t.
been driving it for five decades, it’s more driver than a road error.
The driver should not have been driving if they were that tired. Luckily there were no vehicles coming in the opposite direction or they may have been the victim instead of the mailbox. I am happy that the driver was not injured or killed. I hope the driver will pay the homeowner for his mailbox and to have a new one installed.
I like Martin, he always says whatever is on his mind.
Thank you.
True. But I can also understand having to drive while very tired. Slapping my face and singing to get home from long work hours with little sleep. On longer drives I’ve pulled over to sleep an hour or two to be able to limp home but locally….well it’s part of the reason that most accidents happen close to home. Thankfully nobody got hurt!! And I hope that driver can get some good healthy sleep. Some of us must push harder than we should- not an excuse for dangerous driving just a sympathy for the situation here…
