Smashed CHP vehicle

Details are limited this morning, but a dramatic traffic collision near the Ridgewood Summit south of Willits left a California Highway Patrol SUV mangled, a pickup truck damaged along Highway 101, and an unidentified vehicle at the bottom of a cliff.

As per the California Highway Patrol traffic incident information page, initial reports at 9:47 AM indicated a vehicle was 75 feet down a cliff side and another vehicle was overturned.

First responders shut down a northbound lane North of the Cal Fire Howard Forest Station as they responded to the incident.Pickup in TC

A witness told us a total of three vehicles were involved, the CHP SUV, the pickup along the side of Highway 101, and the vehicle at the bottom of the cliff which they were unable to see when they drove by the accident. They told us the accident was “very strange” with the pickup on the southbound side of the highway, the car down the cliff on the northbound side of the 101, and the CHP vehicle was on the southbound side.

We will be following up with the California Highway Patrol on Monday when their offices reopen to get the details of this accident.

I hope all the people involved in that accident will be fine. I wonder if the CHP SUV was stopped behind the pickup and got slammed in the rear. I sure hope the officer is fine. Maybe it is him looking in the patrol vehicle.

My experience says a lot of people drive way over the speed limit at Ridgewood Summit.

The Highway Patrolman must have been backing up at a high rate of speed when he backed into something. I didn`t know those SUVs would go so fast in reverse.

I hope all are okay!
This collision, and the wet weather in which it occurred, brings to mind the crash when the young CHP Officer (Adams, I believe) crashed and perished on 101 south of Garberville, after what seemed to have been him hot-rodding it in unsafe conditions. They said, soon after that tragedy, there would be ‘an investigation’ of the accident. Never heard what they concluded was the cause. But I do know they named the highway after him…..
Let’s hope no-one, officer or civilian were driving recklessly.

CHP offices should have someone there 24/7. Or, are accidents not allowed after 5pm daily, and never on weekends?
