Today Marks the One Year Anniversary of the Unsolved Shooting Death of 85-Year-Old Rancher, Richard Drewry

Richard Drewry

To the left: Not far from where a gunshot took his life, Richard Drewry’s family built a memorial to him. “[U]nrest still happens every day we drive by his family built memorial,” his son told us. To the right: Richard Drewry.

One year ago today at about 10:45 a.m., a couple found well-respected 85-year-old rancher, Richard Drewry, shot dead in his blue 2010 Ford Explorer near Bell Springs Road just north of Dugan Mill Road and the Humboldt/Mendocino County line.

Patrick Drewry, the son of the victim, told us in an email interview, “Today marks the 1 year anniversary of the day somebody needlessly put a pistol to my fathers head and pulled the trigger…Changing our lives forever.”

But, he said, that law enforcement has been investigating his father’s killing. He explained, “Over the months leading up to today, The Humboldt County Sherriff’s office, The DOJ, and the FBI have been working slowly and methodically to locate the parties responsible for taking our father away.”

He added, “Through months of serving search warrants and following up on rumours and hearsay, we have slowly been able to get a picture of what most likely happened that day as well as possible people involved! With the warrants for satellite intel, cellphone tower dumps, and land line phone records the case has been steadily moving forward.”

Like many in the border area, the victim, Richard Drewry, lived in one county, Mendocino, but maintained deep connections to the neighboring county, Humboldt. Drewry’s family had been ranching in both Humboldt and Mendocino Counties for generations. Patrick Drewry, his son, explained, “His great grandfather settled the ranch in the 1860’s and [it] has stayed the same through 5 generations.”

Born in 1935, Richard Drewry grew up in both counties. The largest part of the ranch he would eventually inherit was located in Mendocino County but he graduated from South Fork High School in Humboldt County and, went to college at Cal Poly after which he married his wife, Phyllis, in 1958. He eventually became a Humboldt County Ag Inspector where he worked for 28 years, according to his family.

Patrick told us that his father, Richard, “loved his ranch and heritage.” He wrote, “[Dad] loved the Winter nights when the rain was hitting the roof and sending him off to sleep. As Spring came closer he was already planning the Spring roundup and branding.” He went onto describe some of the other work that the family did on the ranch. “We had fences to mend and horses to get shod,” he explained. “Also in Spring our dad always planted a garden. A little smaller as he got older.”

There were fun times beyond the hard work, too, Patrick told us. “Summers had my dad making sun tea and lemonade,” he wrote. “We really liked his homemade ice cream and he was proud of that. My dads favorite time of the year on the ranch was the Fall. Deer season, acorns, the leaves falling from the Oaks.”

Bitterness seeping through the words in his email, Patrick wrote, “While driving through his cattle ranch, somebody took the life of an innocent 85 year old man.”

On that morning, one year ago, efforts to save the man’s life were attempted after Drewry was found slumped in his vehicle by a couple. According to a Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department press release, “Upon arrival, deputies located an elderly male gunshot victim inside a vehicle parked along the roadway. Deputies performed lifesaving efforts on the victim, however, the man succumbed to his injuries on scene.”

Patrick said, “The person/people that were involved in this killing have had a whole year to go about their lives but we havent quit looking. To the people that know who i am talking about i would like to ask you to come forward earlier than later! The wheels of law enforcement turn slowly but you should know your window of freedom is slowly closing! The sooner you come forward with information will be better than when that window shuts!”

Patrick’s wife, Jennifer Drewry, told us, “Life has not been the same since he was taken from us. We don’t feel safe on our own ranch not knowing who!!”

Samantha Karges, spokesperson for the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department told us that “because this case is an open and ongoing investigation, our Major Crimes Division is unable to talk with you about it at this time. However, we continue to urge anyone in the community who has information about this case to please come forward and speak with our investigators.”

If anyone has any information about this case, please contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department at (707) 445-7251.

Just looking at it from this side of a screen, some things don’t make sense. Perhaps the family knows more than they are saying, but shooting somebody for NO reason seems an unlikely scenario. Is there someone out there that has a motive? Popular notions might include weed farming, but a murder nearby doesn’t smooth out a rough year. Why murder someone over say, water, if it brings down the whole operation? A rip off? Ranchers grow weed. Self inflicted? Did he have a gun of his own in the car? The original radio traffic said self inflicted. Could be accidental or on purpose, presumably investigators compared bullets to eliminate that possibility. Was the car in park, or drive? Motor running, or ignition off? Did they ever recover a bullet casing? Pistol, or rifle round? There’s just few possibilities that I can imagine where someone would shoot a stranger on a rural road, besides extreme rage and extreme value. There wouldn’t be 1,000lbs, or 1,000 acres on the line without someone else knowing what’s going on. Was he known to yell racist insults at strangers driving by? I’m not trying to be disrespectful, these are just questions that come up from outside the bubble.

Probably 1000 acres and 1000lbs on the line. The rancher dealing with trespassing or other threats such as dogs, water theft, armed incursions, etc. from growers on or near his property that had effects on the safety, security, and livelihood of his ranch and his family. Unfortunately, these days, its not a rarity. Old timers like that don’t scare easily and my guess is he went to have a word and got shot by some less than human scumbag for his trouble. People don’t respect other people’s property or livestock and assume if there is an open piece of land with few people around it’s their’s to do as they please. Narcissistic criminal mentality. Shooting an old man is a coward’s errand. I hope the Drewry family gets some kind of closure and the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Did you even bother to read any of the other articles linked at the bottom of the screen? Most of your speculations are answered there. I’ve known this family for my entire life. Stopping to ask why people are stopping on your property is very common. Not always to run people off even though it’s your property, to see if people need help, directions, whatever. That’s what living in the country has been like for years. But times change, like it or not, and this time some one shot a gentle soul in the head, from behind. Policed the casings and ran off, leaving Dick sitting in his running truck. No gun. Speculation can be a dangerous thing and most times is wrong. If you don’t want to take the time to check facts, ask questions, or care even a little, don’t speculate. It can be very hurtful for the people involved and give others a wrong perception of a good man.

I apologize for coming off as calous, and no I did not re read the articles past the first couple, but I appreciated the quick summary. I don’t know anybody involved so I’m trying to imagine what motives there were, and then why there’s been no arrest. I can imagine a local dispute, with known suspects, I guess, but that seems to shorten the suspect list. A self deportation would complicate an arrest. In some dis organized crime syndicate the perp himself could have been murdered for doing stupid. Happening upon a crime in progress, or a tweaker in extreme psychosis is possible, but still in the crazy less likely category. Somebody trying to demonstrate what they’re capable of doing to somebody else, there watching? Something stupid like domestic violence? Still bad timing/bad luck. There’s no logic to something like this, just weird possibilities until the trial’s over. I know speculation alone doesn’t get to the truth. Good luck

There’s a special hole in hell waiting for the perp(s). As well as a crow bar and an off road shallow ditch to take them there.

A year already! We think of Dick when we leave our home every time, driving thru his land at the head of the ranch, remembering his cheery waves thru his open window in greeting if he was on the road. Or him tootling along Bell Springs Rd in his Rhino with Phyllis at his side on their way to the Harris store. He was one of the first ranchers to accept us hippies arriving in the early-mid 70s out here, and gave my baby son and I rides to town when we were hitchhiking. Always a soft spot in my heart for Dick and I hope the family gets closure SOON!

It is hard to reconcile the slow pace of modern justice in this scenario.

5 generations ago, the murderer(s) would probably have been swiftly dealt with: I sincerely hope justice is served for this man and his family.

Weed money does strange things to some growers. Value of life with some have a low meaning. It could mean finding the person who murdered Drewry may never be found. Growers don’t rat each out. Mums the word. I have a college friend I roomed with when this friend earned him Botany degree. When ever I see him in Garberville and we have lunch at the Calico’s he tells me there are eyes on us to see who I am. And an innocent 85 year old means anything to them. So we role play and I pretend I am a buyer. Nice clothes and a BMW. It’s what it is in Humboldt County. Money rules!

Maybe LE is gathering more corroborating material to build a stronger case.

Once our communities cemented the social and financial contract with the street drug industry, only fools assumed the days to come would be just like the days before we sold out. Stated another way: Mr. Drewry had it coming for a long, long, long while. Old man, you refused to adapt to the new and ugly reality and therefore you joined the ranks of the extinct as a result. Truth.

What the hell is wrong with you?
Since you talk so big why don’t you tell us who you are.
It is people like you who bring down an entire industry.
It is people like you who’ve cemented a contract with street drugs, not our counties or the industry in general.
The reality doesn’t have to be ugly. People like you make it ugly for themselves. For most of us it is beautiful & we won’t allow those with your mindset to destroy that for us.
Enjoy your life of darkness & negativity!

You sound like you might have some insight here, or are you just that delusional? I didn’t know that we had changed that much that you can be on your property and have someone kill you for not adapting. Adapting to what? Free range murder? If you have info, speak up. If not, slink away back into whatever hole you popped out of, street drug industry on private property?
