This section includes announcements of important events in our lives–births, graduations, engagements, marriages, and deaths. If you want to share an event with your community, please send a photo and a written piece to [email protected].
Richard Grayson Drewry, a lifelong and 4th generation rancher of Humboldt County passed away suddenly Jan. 26th while checking his livestock on the family ranch on Bell Springs Rd. Richard was an Agriculture inspector for 28 years in Humboldt and knew an amazing amount of people from his years of working around the county, In 1990 after retiring he became a full time rancher on the family ranch at Bell Springs. Richard was a part of logging on the ranch as well as the cattle operations. Best of all, he was a great entertainer when friends were visiting. Having lived 84 years i cant tell you all the great things my dad did for people and the great advice/laughs he was so good for.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Richard Drewry, and Barbara Zora Drewry. He is survived by his wife Phyllis Drewry, sons Perry, Patrick (Jennifer) Drewry. Grandchildren Westley, Brenden, and Kai Drewry. A celebration of life will be held at the home of Richard at Bell Springs on Sunday May 30th at 1 p.m. We are having a potluck so any salads, desserts, or deli trays would be welcomed. A folding chair also if you have one.

Rest in peace old timer.
Rest in peace old timer, you were taken too soon.
To remember Dick is to remember many, many fond stories of good times. I will miss him.
A longtime friend will be missed.
Condolences to his family~
Jeannie & Charlie Thorp
I’m so very sad to hear this. The Drewrys were very close to my family in so many ways. Loved them all. My memories of the ranch are with me always.
This good mans family has been in the same spot since the 1890s. I can only hope they find peace and that Mr. Drewry is able to rest in peace. A very good man taken to soon.
RIP Dick, but an event like this could be a super spreader. Sorry to have to say this.
Didn’t know the man but the elders here spoke very highly of Mr. Drewery. Yep all elders I knew felt that he was a foundation guy. Back in 92 Roy Heider and I walked and knocked on a lot of doors and during that time Roy reflected on a life on 101. Dick Drewery was high on his list of the genuine article.
Condolences to the family. Taken under terrible circumstances. Rest in peace, may there be justice for you.
My condolences to Phyliss, Perry and Pat/family. It was a pleasure to grow up calling Dick and Phyliss “friends of the family”. I remember well my visit to the ranch as the teenage babysitter. May there be justice in the search for answers. RIP
I was sad to hear about how his passing came to be. A long time resident of the County and good man.
Kym,
Not wanting to be inconsiderate but are there any more details out there about this incident?
Words can not describe what a true loss this really was. My father, Roy Strout, had known Dick & Phyllis the majority of his life, going back to high school. I spent a great deal of time with Dick and his family at our homes, vacations, and of course the ranch. Perry and I were pretty close friends growing up and he was my best man at my wedding. Pat and I were also close growing up and truthfully I consider them both as brothers rather than friends. When I lost my Dad in 2003 Dick let me know that if I ever needed anything I could count on him. Truthfully he never needed to say that as I already knew that, that’s just the kind of guy he was. The world lost a good man when he was violently and senselessly taken away from us. This man would give you the shirt off of his back with no hesitation. My heart aches for Phyllis, Pat, Perry and the rest of the family through this tragic time. I can only imagine how they must feel because I know that I will never be able to heal from this and it has to be even worse for them… God’s speed Dick, you ARE missed.
Ed (and or Kym),
Do you know anything about this case and why this man was senselessly killed on the ranch? I want to respect the family during this time and know that this man was a solid community member and was very sad to hear about what happened.
Sincerely,
Bill
Bill,
As far as I have heard is that is actively under investigation but I do not know of any significant leads. Senseless is the word that seems to describe it best. In all of my years of knowing Dick he was a kind and generous man. He could be firm when he needed to be but always maintained his composure and was not confrontational. Like may people that know him have done, I have spent much thought into what could have happened and can come up with nothing that could result in this kind of violence. Hopefully the sheriff’s department can come up with some sort of lead that brings whoever pulled the trigger to justice.
I wish I had better things to tell you but that’s all that I know.
Ed
I know that Dick was a very kind person. There’s no answer to why such violence ?. My condolences to the family,. I am deeply saddened. R I P Richard (Dick) Drewry. You are and will be missed.
