My mentors, my babysitters, my beloved friends, Dick & Phyl. My heart is broken. RIP Dick, see ya on the other side. Wish I were closer so I could be there with you Phyl and Pat.
Dick you were such a kind man. You loved your family, dogs, and cows. One hell of a good cowboy, I sure will miss you. I’m thinking of you Pat and all the family. My heart hurts for you all. Happy peaceful trails Dick, SH.
These old ranchers have certainly seen some changes in these hills. From the good ole days when it was just large ranches, to what it has become today. I didn’t know this man but I bet I could tell you who he was. My condolences to the family.
Not a fair comparison at all – Dick was a rancher, not a farmer, and as one of his neighbors for 37 years I can say with certainty that while this corner of the county has it’s wild side and plenty of wilder history, the neighborhood is to a vast majority regular working people who care for each other and are law abiding folk, not black marketeers or whatever.
I’ve seen the sheriff’s office solve enough cases like this that if there’s any evidence at all, they’ll figure it out. The difficulty won’t be from lawlessness or lack of interest, but in the sheer senselessness of the event. I live a couple miles from where it happened and I drive by there frequently, occasionally seeing Dick or other ranchers out and about. I’ve always loved having the Drewry’s for neighbors – Pat even did roadwork for us and helped with a pond.
And never have I felt threatened in this area or worried that I might be accosted, nor have we ever had such shootings before. Neighbors have tiffs of course, and we’ve had our share, but nothing like this. I just don’t get it…
Where did his family hail from? Ran across the Drewry name in Mendocino related to the man who ran that church of cannabis.
I am so sad. My heart goes out to phyliss and the family such a wonderful couple! Phyliss is an amazing person and was such amazing aide when I taught special education at Redway school, hard to believe this could happen to such a good person!
