Despite Law Enforcement’s Emphatic Denials, Social Media Insists Four Women Are Victims of a North Coast Serial Killer

All four women speciously attributed to an unsubstantiated North Coast Serial Killer- From left to right: Ukiah's Alyssa Mae Sawdey, Napa's Crystal McCarthy, Guerneville's Cynthia Crane, and Willits's Amber Dillon.

All four women that died in the last month and whose deaths are being attributed to a serial killer in spite of emphatic denials from three different county sheriff’s. From left to right: Ukiah’s Alyssa Mae Sawdey, Napa’s Crystal McCarthy, Guerneville’s Cynthia Crane, and Willits’s Amber Dillon.

North Coast community Facebook pages have continued to circulate an unsubstantiated rumor that a serial killer is preying upon women in Mendocino, Sonoma, and Napa Counties. This assumed serial killer’s victims were originally two Mendocino County women but has grown to include one from Sonoma County, and another from Napa County.

Social Media Post circulating.

Screenshot of a social media post.

We reached out to all three law enforcement agencies investigating the deaths of these four women. All, in their own way, made it clear there was no known connection between these tragedies and these cases are not a result of any serial killer preying on women.

These rumors first emerged after two women were found deceased under suspicious circumstances mere days after one another. The first was 33-year-old Willits woman Amber Dillon who was discovered in a field off Highway 101 near the Mendocino/Sonoma County line on January 7, 2022. A press release from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office stated Violent Crimes Investigators combed the area for evidence on the following day deeming the death as “suspicious.”

It was Tuesday, January 11, 2022, when SCSO Sergeant Juan Valencia revealed to us the name Amber Dillon when reports emerged of a body being found in Ukiah. After three days, MCSO identified the decedent as a 22-year-old Ukiah woman Alyssa Mae Sawdey and labeled the death as “suspicious” requiring a forensic autopsy that could take several weeks to complete.

Community members started to concoct this theory of a serial killer immediately based on commonalities between these women: their gender, their youth, their residence in Mendocino County, their characterization as “suspicious,” and the fact the cases emerged just days after each other.

As web sleuths descended on the case, we reached out to Mendocino County Sheriff Matt Kendall about these claims and he said unequivocally after “exhaustive efforts of investigators” there is currently, “no connection between these two cases.”

Soon these sleuths upped this unverified North Coast serial killer’s victim list to four including 33-year-old Cynthia Crane, a woman who was found dead in a creek near Sonoma County’s Guerneville, and 37-year-old Napa County woman Crystal Lea McCarthy who was found floating in the Napa River.

33-year-old Crystal Lea McCarthy was reported by the Napa Police Department as missing on December 20, 2021. Her last known location was the Napa River Trail. Napa Police released the last known image of McCarthy alive taken by a 7-11 surveillance camera on December 13, 2021, at 10:30 p.m.

Ten days later, a Napa Sheriff’s deputy was patrolling the Napa River by boat search for McCarthy when he discovered a woman’s body under the Third Street Bridge near downtown Napa. Investigators recovered the body, confirmed it was McCarthy, and informed her next-of-kin. Her body was discovered downstream from where she was last seen, and details regarding her cause of death are still pending.

We spoke with Detective Brandt Keown, one of the Napa Police Department’s investigators looking into the death of McCarthy. Upon informing him that McCarthy’s death was being tied by social media web sleuths to a serial killer, he simply said, “I did not know there were rumors. I did know about these others. I don’t think there is a serial killer.”

As to McCarthy’s cause of death, Keown said that information will be released pending autopsy results as well as toxicology reports.

As to 33-year-old Cynthia Crane, we spoke with Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Juan Valencia who told us she was found floating in a Mays Canyon creek on December 18, 2021. He told us her death is labeled “suspicious” because she was found in the water and bystanders saw someone floating downstream and called it in. Similar to the three other women, an autopsy is being conducted and more information will be available at a later date.

Sergeant Valencia spoke to law enforcement’s designation of a death as “suspicious.” He understood that the public sees the word as implying malevolence or wrong-doing. When law enforcement uses the word, Sergeant Valencia explained, initial investigations determine the actual manner of death is unclear and more investigations are necessary to determine the cause.

He went on to say that “every time someone dies and it’s not witnessed by somebody, the manner, and cause of deaths are considered suspicious” with follow-up investigation required.

Sergeant Valencia described how if an elderly person was to die at home alone in their bed, investigators would reach out to the individual’s doctor to corroborate ongoing health issues that might have led to natural death. He added that if a person was to die in a car accident, the manner of death is clear with further investigations unnecessary.

Meanwhile, a drug overdose is more than likely going to be considered a “suspicious death” until a toxicology report is completed and investigators can point towards the exact cause.

But, in deaths like these four women in which the means and manner of death are unclear based on the evidence gathered at the scene, the death is considered “suspicious” and investigatory steps are taken to determine the cause. Investigators photograph the scene, collect evidence, and work hard to determine the cause because as Sergeant Valencia put it, “we only have one chance to get it right.”

Regarding these rumors of a serial killer, Sergeant Valencia said, “People are going to assume the worst” and “speculate without having all the information.” He made it clear that “there is no information or evidence there is a serial killer, and if there was we would tell them we would want the community to be on high alert and be aware of the danger.”

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department, The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, and Napa Police Department are asking the public for information regarding these four cases. If you know anything about the circumstances surrounding Dillon’s or Crane’s death, contact Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 565-2650. If you have information about Sawdey’s death, contact Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office at 707-234-2100 or the WeTip anonymous crime reporting hotline at 800-782-7463. If you have information about the death of Crystal Lea McCarthy, contact Napa Police Department Detective Brendt Keown at (707) 257-9592.

NOTE: An earlier version of this story gave death year dates of Dillon and Sawdey incorrectly.

It’s easy to assume the worst scenario when there are so many dead women in so short a window. The one common denominator is they are dead and not by their own design. Indicating there are four separate murderers operating at around the same time? And in close proximity to each other? Is that the ticket?

Ladies, please carry. Learn how to shoot, and always be on the lookout, trust no one, Take defense classes, and always carry, whether to church, grocery store, always carry. There are so many ways to carry concealed, so many products to help you do so. The NRA has many classes to help you, join us, and don’t be a victim.

We know that’s statistically people who carry firearms are more likely to injure themselves or a member of their family than they are to defend themselves against an attacker.

Okay- so what you’re saying is that it’s not for everybody? I agree. Some people are too nervous or ungrounded to have firearms on them. Of course. I would modify Drivers comment to tell women (and men!) to CONSIDER getting a concealed carry permit. Take classes first. See how it feels. CONSIDER your particular circumstances. Only carry a gun if you are sure you are comfortable and you can trust yourself. Never allow others access. Guns are a very powerful tool. Yes- they are a tool. And yes- should always be regarded as a very serious tool. Much danger exists in the wrong people having guns. But then again-that might be why you want to carry one!!

This is exactly why I won’t get a permit or a weapon; I don’t trust myself. My dad taught hunter’s safety classes, and I grew up being comfortable with firearms. Once, after the traumatic brain injury that changed my life, he took me for target practice. I don’t remember what happened, but it was decided that I should never have easy access to guns, and I 100% agree. “Better safe than sorry” took on a new meaning after that day.

Then go ahead and find yourself an objective source and do some research on Wayne Lapierre. He and the NRA are currently under criminal investigation for corruption. By the way…if you’re going to completely ignore anything from a news source that you think leans to the left, you should probably ignore sources that lean to the right as well while you’re doing your research. In the interest of, you know, facts.

Thank you for the recommendation. However, I know for a fact that you don’t want me to have easy access to a firearm, knife, broken bottle, or any sort of weapon if I were to get triggered, because I have a history of acting out against the people I care about RATHER THAN the person responsible for upsetting me. It’s scary and shameful, and I would rather be at risk than to put well-meaning bystanders at risk. This is well documented, and I have been in therapy for over 30 years.

RHBB is reporting on the deaths .. and the social media-fed firestorm.

“People are going to assume the worst” and “speculate without having all the information.”

That’s perfectly natural. But society has changed. We can now anonymous chit-chat in seconds, this site being an example. Online venues, much (much) more than this one, can explode in speculation, ideas growing and sometimes wildly, including BS purposely fed into the mix. (The political-strategist class, of the Bannon mold, has mastered taking advantage of this. First injecting a version of “information” via social and alt media, then watching it fester and explode, as planned.)

If anyone has a good idea, tip, whatever, then stay offline with it and call the sheriffs or tip-line provided.

It’s not uncommon for law enforcement to be the last to realize there is a serial killer. In reality none of us would KNOW, until after a fair trial, after a suspect is arrested. It seems suspicious, and possibly linked, unless LE has firm evidence UN-linking the cases. As in, this one ODd, this one we suspect her boyfriend, this one had an accident, etc. I’d say that four women dead, under these circumstances, in that time frame, in that geography is suspicious. The minimum would be that the detectives from the different jurisdictions at least get together and compare notes. Plus compare notes on other similar cases in the past. Many serial killers became quite good at limiting their forensic evidence. Many barely squeeze by law enforcement incompetence.
One of Jeffery Dahmer’s victims nearly escaped, and was actually returned to Dahmer’s apartment. Cops were in his apartment, with drums full of bodies!(in the bedroom) Dahmer tried to zombify this juvenile, by drilling his head, he ran out, was found sitting on the curb naked and bleeding by a group of women. They were absolutely concerned,(obviously) and absolutely ignored by the cops. Dahmer ran out and convinced the law, they were having a lover’s quarrel. He went on to kill something like 9 more.

I will never forget that story. Yes-law enforcement returned the poor naked guy to Dahmer. Who subsequently killed and ate him… I would never put my trust in any law enforcement agency-unless there was a clear violent aggressor and they were there to make everybody stop attacking. They are very often not the brightest bulbs in the house.

This is strange for me because I was just recently looking into the missing lady found in the lake because I remember some time ago of people murdered on the beach just seemed off to me and now all 4 women in the same proximity but what stands out to me is I read suspicious death and grisly now this changes things to me as obviously the body is really messed up this is the one found off 101. They also say they only have one chance to get this right so they probably have to get there evidence and manner of deaths before connecting the dots if there is any to connect. My personal opinion which BTW doesn’t matter but I think given the areas off interstate and the proximity, time frame there is a killer maybe serial but usually they are very distinct in a certain pattern but need to know more about these women and manner of death. It Def raises my eyebrows though.

I thought the point of journalism was to provide facts as touchstones that would keep wild speculation from running rampant.

Perhaps this isn’t the place for you then. Because Matt and I will keep trying to get out solid facts so that the community is better informed. And when readers reach out to us asking us to clarify if something on social media is of concern, then, we respond by trying to get them answers. To me, that is one of my most important jobs.

It does take the public and the Law to recognize if there are similarities. When there are distances, and multiple jurisdictions commonalities can be missed. At this point, I’m guessing, they are all being treated as separate cases, investigate by different individuals. It takes public awareness to realize you might have seen something relevant. Unless it’s in the media, detectives may not know of the other cases.

Labs are not servicing individual counties is the reason. It’s also a lot easier nowadays for killers (either one off or serial) to find victims on hookup/dating apps than it was in the 90s.

Serial killers also often operate with weeks, months, or years between their crimes.

Sure, it’s possible that one killer killed all four, it’s also possible that all four are victims of four solo killers. It could even be four different serial killers whose other victims haven’t been identified yet.

If there aren’t specific commonalities (selection of victims, method of killing, method of disposal, location of disposal, that sort of thing) by definition it’s not a serial killer.

It would be equally foolish for police to doggedly pursue the idea of a serial killer when there isn’t one, letting three other murderers get away, as it was for law enforcement to insist there wasn’t a serial killer when Wayne Ford (and others) were active.

A radius drawn from the geocentric spot in the middle of the USA would be about 1,500 miles. These four women, were found in Napa, Guerneville, Willits, and the Mendo/Sonoma county line? So a radius reaching each discovery is closer to 50 miles. Describing area, though a 50×20 mile box would encompass 1,000 square miles. Four murders in a month in a 100×40 mile (4,000 sq. miles)area should get some attention. But otherwise I get it. You are really cool, and are not easily impressed.

Murder mountin in Alderpoint got is name in the late 70 I believe from a couple serial killers living there. I could be wrong on the time line. In short we have had a few here over the years. It is a good place for them to operate with remote areas low number of cops and a large population of people that live under the radar ie trimigrants.

Hopefully there is not one loose. People including local LE need to keep an open mind and consider any possibility until the facts rule them out not just say it is not the case until proven it is.

Dept 20,2021, but sorry my bad, they said the remains appeared to be from a male, although a serial killer might not discriminate.

I agree I’m surprised this one wasn’t bigger. Not a lot of info. Why would you dump a body and burn it if it was just an od? Seems like a evidence was trying to be destroyed.

Hmm if she was transient, it could be from another homeless as there seems to be encampments by alot of these murder locations. I may be grasping at straws but crystal was last seen with a homeless man before her body was found. I guess I am alluding to a travelling homeless serial killer?

You know who I trust more than Leo?

Crackheads. Homeless people. Conspiracy theorem.

Pretty much anyone and everyone is more honest than our local “elected” sheriff.

Looks like a serial killer to me. I’m going with that. The woman in guerneville should be included here also.

Based on what connections?

Or just more of the same presumptuous fear mongering rumor milling like what is called out in this article?

Based on my belief that there are always at least one or two serial killers operating in Northern California and Leo lie pathologically about everything and anything even if it doesn’t make sense.

That’s called a thin, uncorrelated hypothesis.
Find some supporting evidence for the hypothesis and maybe then a real theory forms.

Not so much.

You forgot about Troy Edward Driver.

Likely soon to be proven, Serial Killer from the North Coast.

Gvlle girl wasn’t a healthy female to begin w (having to do dialysis and not staying on. Top of her appts), not mention homeless lifestyle, drug user. Does any of this information make her death any less important no, but it does help us w knowing these females lifestyle. And if they all had similar ones then somebody knows something for sure out there, and most likely saw something or someone that may matter to help w these cases. If they were more facts about each of these females put out here for all to learn it just might be more possible to find the ‘who done its’ and ‘ the why’s ‘ , just my opinion but really the only thing from what it sounds like is the napa girl may have been homeless what about the other two girls from up north. Were they all battling addiction ( possibly) were any of them seeming to be raped or were they raped? How come these kind of questions haven’t been answered and if the cops knows these answers why haven’t they undated any one of these stories. MOST IMPORTANTLY HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD THAT THEY ARE ALOT OF. MISSING FEMALES IN AND AROUND SONOMA COUNTY’S AREAS? AND IF THERE IS SO MANY OTHER MISSING PPL WHY HAVENT I HEARD OF ANY UP UNTIL AFTER CYNTHIA CRANES CASE… TO MUCH IS HUSH HUSH W IN OUR SYSTEM AND IT NEEDS FIXING SOMEHOW SOMEWAY

My question is where we’re they when they were abducted? Is there any video surveillance that seen this? Was it on a dating site where they met the person? These would be great info to release to the public in that area so that women can be aware.

The drug fentanyl Is the serial killer everyone needs to be aware of. 33 deaths in Humboldt alone last year. That doesn’t include all of the people that were saved by Narcan . If you want to add the total Fentanyl deaths for Napa County, Sonoma County, Mendocino County, and Humboldt county it would be in the hundreds. Wake up! No apparent cause of death but suspicious does not equal homicide.

I believe that it is better to take precautions, and not outrule a common killer. Even if they are drug overdoses, they could have all been intentionally overdosed. Seems all to often drug addiction in a girl’s history can lead authorities to a lax investigation, deeming her an addict, and meanwhile some Freddy Fyntenol creep could be a predator. Regardless 4 girls found dead outside and alone, sounds suspicious enough to pay attention and be cautious going anywhere alone.

Hmmm… this reply here. Young women are dying. Their bodies are being found in unusual places were they didn’t choose to lie by themselves. It makes sense to be a little more cautious and aware. It makes sense to agree that if any of these women were struggling from addiction they may not get adequate investigations. More often than not if people live these loose lives the responses form LEO to concerned family…”that’s their choice, have they taken off before, they are an adult, they did it to themselves, what did you expect to happen?” Etc. It’s really not okay to ignore “whatever” the issues are because a person is judged un worthy. Shocked! Yes! We can do better as a whole.

How old is Crystal Lea? The article refers to her as 33 and 37. If she is 33, that means 3 of the 4 women are the same age. Not just in their 30s but 33. I am wondering what else they have in common.

Lack of evidence doesn’t mean there is no connection. It means they have not found a connection. But have they looked? Are all women vaccinated? People are dropping all over, all ages.

All the woman have green eyes, and redish brown, or dark burgandy hair. Serial killers dont always kill in the same are each time. Sometimes they kill based on the physical apperance, and all the victims he/she has found have been in the same area,

I’m sorry it was supposed to say I didn’t know any of these beautiful young ladies and I didn’t!!! Thats is why I said there were claims of addiction!!! I’m not saying anyone of them had any kind of addiction because I wouldn’t know!!! I just wanted to know if there was a possibility of bad drugs hitting the Mendocino area so maybe a warning could go out to others!!! GOD BLESS AND KEEP THOSE PRECIOUS ANGELS NEAR TO YOU AMEN 🙏 👼🏻👼🏻👼🏻👼🏻

So childish the comments most had on this . 4 woman were dumped and left for dead .that is very disturbing and all communities should try very hard to think if they may have seen anything around the times of these deaths . It could be something very small . If anyone has any cameras up that may have caught some footage in the area . A killer may not be aware of cameras please let detectives know if u have cameras . Also cell phones ping cell towers and hopfully the killer is stupid and thinks he got away with murder but information from the public will help catch him . If you know anything about how any of these woman was murdered do the right thing TELL the sheriff . Please

Another women died, named Emma Roark in Rancho Cordova(Sacramento). It isn’t just coincidence for so many deaths to happen so close to eachother too. Please everyone stay safe if you reside in Northern California.

A fifth girl went missing on 1/27/22 in the Sacramento area. Emma Roark was killed and found on or along the Sacramento River on 2/2/22 in Rancho Cordova. She was 20 years old and went for a walk by the river and never came home. The police have ruled the killing a homicide. This is within months of the other 4 girls who were killed and ruled as suspicious. I do believe this is a serial killer as the deaths are within weeks of each other and similar circumstances.

This was 10 days before Naomi Irion was abducted, and someone said this was along I-80 as well. A connection to Troy Edward Driver should be investigated in this case as well.

Police say people are going to assume the worst. What other assumption is there when their bodies were found in such out of the way places with no explanation of how they got there? I personally am outraged by the lack of attention given these cases. Add to that the sketchy information given out by law enforcement. There should be much better coverage and info so that all of us can feel our safety is being regarded, not dismissed. Not to mention the fact that these young women deserve to have their possible murders investigated not swept under the carpet. Something is rotten here,
and needs to be looked into. No doubt about it. Anyway, thanks and kudos to Redheaded Blackbelt for the extensive article, and the still continuing thread of comments. At least we have that. I would like to think that maybe law enforcement is holding back to keep info from the possible perpetrator, but it has been more than two weeks now so more info should be forthcoming such as cause of death and the victim’s activities leading up to that time.

Did you guys see the 20 year old woman in Rancho Cordova that was found dead in a river earlier this week? Cops are talking to the people in the area and they suspect it’s all the same person.

Her killer, a transient, was arrested and charged for the murder baded on DNA evidence. I’m curious if hes similar to the transient that was last seen with Crystal McCarthy…

I believe these cases are connected to the slaying of Naomi Irion. The suspect Troy Driver, became family with the vicinities which are shown in his criminal arrest record. Also he still has family living in the area. Where was Troy Driver from December 15 through late January 2022. This just seems to fit his MO.

Wish there was a channel that covered missing persons, homicides & if a suspect has been charged via timeline and map. Solved unsolved etc. My prayers go out to all the families with deceased & missing loved ones.
It makes me sick the amount of homicides that the media doesnt cover. There is definitely something going on and there must be a way that we as a community can keep close tabs to what is going on around us county to county state to state etc
