Family and Friends Ask for Help Searching for Hunter Missing off Hwy 162

Today and tomorrow at 9 a.m. (and possibly longer), searchers for missing hunter Johnny Davis are gathering at the 8 Mile Bridge on Hwy 162/Covelo Road (located a little over 8 miles east of Hwy 101). Family and friends are requesting the community’s help.
Particularly they are asking for help from anyone who lives in the area or has hunted there.
They have set up a Facebook page for anyone who is interested in following their search. Click here to be taken to the page.
The page has suggestions on what to wear and bring on the search. It urges, “Everyone who would like to search is asked to wear reflectors, download onyx map app, and bring walkie-talkies.”
Davis went missing during last Sunday’s heavy rains in the area while camping/hunting in the area with his son. Davis’ dog has been located, but Davis is still missing.Davis is a 48 year-old male with brown hair and blue eyes from Humboldt County. He is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 220 lbs.
Davis was last seen wearing a camouflage rain jacket and neon green pants with reflective stripe.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department requests that anyone with any information please call them at 707-463-4086.

How old is his son? What direction did he leave? That’s all private property. Was he on his friend or families property? Did he have a rifle or bow ? Was he camping at that spot? It’s not an overnight camping area. Did he spot a buck from the road and go after it ?
None of that matters. All that matters is family and friends need help in the search to help bring him home. If you want to know direction he left go up there and help with the search.

Atleast I can use my real name. I’ve gone up there and wish I could go back up but I have A sick toddler at home or I’d be there. I’m tired of the negative comments on these posts. All we care about is he’s found and brought home. If people don’t want to help or have nothing nice to say there’s no need for people to comment. We need as much help as possible so if you want to help there is family and friends up there searching that can give you the info. What does a name have to do with your rude reaction to someone asking questions about the person who is missing again you make no sense. If someone is missing you ask questions like I did. Period. I was trying to help which I think is pretty cool for someone to take time and risk there life to go look for someone I don’t even know. It was extremely upsetting to get a rude comment just because I wanted information so I could help. But for the second time you comment rude about my name as if that matters.
Theres no reason to hide your name on these post if you truly want to help. Most the people commenting negatively are not using there names. If you want to help please go help. All that matters is he’s found for family and friends that care about him. Any other questions can be answered up there.

Some of your questions arent going to help. Like the age of his son. Why’s that matter he’s not missing? There aren’t answers to most those questions and people keep asking questions to try and get info and it’s not to help. I’m not saying that’s what you did or are doing. Just saying others have . The age was asked about because of possible foul play if he’s an older child or an accident happened with a young kid that maybe he is scared to say. Which is why I just wanted to have that answered with out me having to bring up such a possibly offensive question. I was asking certain questions for certain reasons that I don’t want to explain every reason. But also I was just hoping to get a little back ground story I guess so I could think of ideas to help locate this man. I feel bad for everyone involved. I’ll pray for you all. I’m just trying to help. I thought people would be quick to give out info so people could think of ideas and possibilities. But maybe there’s a reason to not.

We think he got injured and can’t walk out on his own. Thank you for the prayers. If you want to help I can give you A number to call and they can probably answer your questions. The bow rifle question is because a gun will sink in the river but a bow may float . So if he had a bow and he got stuck in river it would be good to look for the bow along river banks and then if you find that he could possibly be across the river or got swept away down river and be lost down river not knowing his way back . I’m trying to have a positive out look. Or with a rifle he could have taken a shot from road side of river but with a bow he would have had to wade across to take a shot . Either way bringing a buck back across a river would be tough and could be risky. And if he was camping question then there is possibility of getting lost in the night . Or if he does have a rifle someone maybe could have heard a shot . Or he could shoot the rifle to get attention if he is lost so people should listen for shots . Three shots in a row is a mayday call .
He could be lost or he could be injured no one knows. I don’t know all the most upto date info but I’m sure anyone up there would be more then willing to answer your questions.

John is the father of my 5 niece’s and nephew’s. He is a avid hunter and fisherman. He spends a lot of time outdoors. It is definitely worrisome that he is still missing after all these days.
I wanted to contribute that when my friend Dave Stornetta went missing up there while hunting, the public helicopters were completely inept at finding him. The first day after they stopped the search and his wife hired a private helicopter, his son and the Pilot found him fairly quickly. He had 3 fires going and was walking between the fires to stay alive and active and eating lizards from around the rocks around his fires. Don’t give up! Hope your loved one if found safe.

What is the area of the search, it sounds like east of 162 and north of the river? What is the protocol when closed gates and posted signs are encountered?
Protocol is to stay out and heed the signs, OR roll the dice yourself… there’s only so much ground to cover before you’re trespassing like it sounds like this guy was.

No one is searching areas on private property without property owners permission. The meet sight is at 8 mile bridge off 162.
I have heard from people on the ground that is not correct.

So, let me get the facts straight. Guy goes hunting on private land in Covelo at night in camouflage and a gun then ends up missing. His son and dog come back, but not him. It’s been 2 weeks and there has been no BIG sheriff’s rescue posse and he has not been found. This location is obviously near homes, roads and the town of Covelo, but somehow he has failed in 2 weeks to contact anyone. Is this correct? Just trying to help. He must have a cellphone. Has anyone tried contacting his cellphone provider and ry triangulation to identify his Last location?

Look at the list of missing people reported. This is so sad and such a tragedy. What is going on with the Emerald triangle missing people? Where is law enforcement? Where is the FBI? Why does the most recent missing persons family and friends have to beg people to help with the search and not have the help of law enforcement. Shouldn’t qualified search and rescue teams being coordinating this mission with the assistance of the FBI? When are we going to stand up as citizens of the triangle and demand justice for the missing? We need help! We need the FBI! We need to figure this out or more families are going to be traumatized forever when their loved one is the next victim!
They found at least a dozen other bodies in Florida while searching for Gabby Petito.

He wasn’t up there looking for weed. He was hunting and the season was still open at the time. My comment was not rude. All that matters is he’s found and that’s what everyone’s forgetting. If people have questions there are people up there that will guide them.
Went out to help look but couldn’t get any details on how to get to the area his truck or camp was? All I found was a locked gate where it said command post??? I did spend time searching downstream towards dos Rio’s. Any updates or info would be a big help

in the area he is missing everthing drains down to mill creek and the eel walk downhill in any direction and you get to the road.
in fact it is where mill creek which daring long valley and little lake valley meets the eel river- please correct me if im wrong but i dont think so.
indeed it is all private land ( there may be some blm mixed in) but basically youre parking on the hwy to access the woods if youre not on someones land. something doesnt add up here. anyone can simply walk downhill back to civilization. lots of super sketchy stuff in the area, ive lived in the area my whole life – sinse the 70s

this is actually a really hard place to get lost in due to terrain, there are lots of roads and quite a few houses in the area. im pretty sure there is good cell service in the area too.
maybe the concerned family member could share that the missing person was on private property with permission- and yes it matters-alot
i think if the family could clarify these things they would get help in finding him. lots of us know the area really well and are pretty good at finding stuff, but again its all private property and without that info i wouldnt want to wander around there and again ive been in the area my entire life.
i do hope hes found, remember even people who may or may have done something ill advised or stupid are still loved by thier families and friends
We don’t know if he was on private or BLM. But all but one person has gave permission to family and friends to search the private property area. But of course if going to search ask for permission. He could be in high country injured or lost. His family or friends that park up there by 8 mile bridge would have the most upto date info on what has been searched and which areas have permission to be searched. No cell service where everyone is parked off highway 162 mile marker 8. Thank you we all are praying he’s found safe.

What kind of Hunter was he One to Hunt down into the valley or ravines Do you know his usual access point to 8 mile Ridge
I don’t know his access point. I assume he went up the water way but that’s just an assumption. He could be injured anywhere up on that mountain. There is family still up there searching that has more info.
