Family of Missing Hunter Asks Community to Help With Search This Morning
The family of John Davis, a Humboldt County hunter, who is missing near Covelo requests the community’s help in a search this morning.
“We need everyone who can come,” his mother told us.
The plan is to meet today, Wednesday, October 27, at 10 a.m. at the 8 mile Bridge on Highway 162 west of Covelo, California.
Davis went missing early Sunday morning while camping/hunting in the area with his son. Davis’ dog has been located, but Davis is still missing.
Davis is a 48 year-old male with brown hair and blue eyes from Humboldt County. He is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 220 lbs.
Davis was last seen wearing a camouflage rain jacket and neon green pants with reflective stripe.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department requests that anyone with any information please call them at 707-463-4086.

Blaming someone who is potentially a victim gives the power to the responsible party and does not hold them accountable.
It’s millions of acres of federal land. It’s not even grow season. It’s hunting season. Thousands of deer tags are issued for SOHuM and Northern Mendocino.
There is no federal land adjacent or even near 101 in the vicinity of 8-mile bridge. The nearest BLM land is several miles to the southeast.

This is at least 15 miles from Covelo, I hope that they have permission to access private land.

Stumbling onto private property might be why this guy is missing. I genuinely hope they find him safe and ok but I do wonder what he was hunting for during that storm. So odd that he was out hunting in that weather.
Deer hunters go out in the rain because that’s when you get a deer. That’s when they’re moving. Nothing weird about that. The weird thing is why he’d go down there to hunt when there is much better hunting around here.
According to you, murdering harmless people who step on your property is a regular occurrence. It is not. Name ten times, no name one time that you know of where a hunter in the wilderness was murdered for crossing some invisible property line. This is millions of acres of federal land. I doubt he was anywhere near any private property.
Not at 8 mile bridge, there is no public land there. Most of the area being searched belongs to Rich Padula’s Coastal Forestlands, Ltd.

I’ve trespassed MANY times in Sonoma and Mendo, including along 162 and the tracks following Outlet Creek. Never been shot, only been admonished a handful of times. Remember, blue line waterways are PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY, and can be used for travel AND recreation, regardless of who owns the land around it.
That is true for “navigable” waterways, but you must remain below the mean annual high water level.
Generally not a good idea to go places you know you don’t belong.

Its one thing for LE/FD to intrude under exigent circumstances, but a mob of volunteers not so much. There’s no “well, I felt like I had a good reason” exception in the trespassing law that I’m aware of.

Sounds like a really dumb plan to go hunting and camping in the most dangerous zone of the emerald triangle. Walking around with a gun at night is sure to draw attention from nefarious characters that are breaking the law. Is there more to the story here. Was he really hunting? Hey stop this right now!!! A man who is loved is missing and you all are speculating,knowing nothing. He has hunted there for decades with no problem. His family reads comments. They are💔 and scared. He’s a son, brother,father,friend,uncle and grandfather. Have some compassion. He’s not out looking for marijuana. He was hunting bucks in the rain which is the best time to hunt.

Who in their right mind wants to go on search for this guy in Covelo? I feel really bad for him and his family, but going to be hard imo to get people involved in this search. If he was out near Willow Creek or the Lost Coast you’d probably get a lot of help, but Covelo?? Seriously?? That’s like saying let’s get a group of white people to go looking for someone lost on the Hupa reservation….just saying…my condolences to his loved ones…..

I thought I’d check DFGs website for the dates B5, or B3 were open. Should be basic. Doesn’t work. Every now and then these agencies need to check how their over priced, over designed websites actually function.
What’s he hunting? Deer season still open there? He was with his son? How old is he? Where is he? Any map discussion? It’s always good to show someone where you think you’re going. Someone: pay attention to what you’re loved one is showing you! The first step to understanding maps is to look at them and try.
How old was his son that he was hunting with? What’s goin on with him? How’s they get separated?
The family isn’t able to see these comments cuz there out there looking for him! So keep ur negative bullshit to your self

Old enough to hunt. People who hunt know that they go separate directions and meet up at a pre planned exit point.

This man is a good man a good father and my friend maybe he is on private land it’s not likes right out your window besides some people just have to much bloody land point remains he’s missing and all that no and love him are horrified and want him home I no let’s do something as a scommunity we never do have compassion for our fellow men my grandma used to say if you don’t have anything nice to say keep your mouth shut

I read through all the comments I thought I would respond on yours since you’re a friend of john’s my cousin Becky asked me to bring my paramotor to the bridge and see if I could do a flyover search for John I’m not familiar with that area I am from Humboldt County “fortuna” I do have concerns with all these comments I’ve been reading about growers and land owners in that immediate area I did call the Mendocino sheriffs department gave them my name and number told them I could assist in Ariel search but no one‘s got back to me yet if you have any updates about John please post I’m very interested.

Ok thanks Jennifer, Ive just heard To many bad stories about police not looking and holding others back who are passionate about helping and actually will put in a solid search, if any of my family member were out there no one could prevent me from searching as it should be.
We forget the police are just doing a 9 to 5 job and have no skin in the game. I can’t believe anybody would try to stop a family member searching for their own…!
It’s A hard situation for everyone but the search and rescue had a lot of people out there working hard and volunteering yesterday when I went out there. I understand both sides of it not being fair to be stopped from searching and them needing everyone out of there so they could use there gear and not follow wrong peoples tracks. I’m just praying for A miracle. Once again thank you very much for the offer to help and if needed I will for sure reach out to you if family ends up needing help.

That’s some strenuous hiking on Brushy Mountain for a 48-yo with a BMI over 30. Wish the guy luck, I’d hate for it to be me or somebody in my circles.

So just throwing this out in case it might be of any help to the family or any other individuals interested in helping search who may be concerned for safety reasons or anything regarding trespassing..
Uncertain if any of the following people might be able to steer this in the proper direction however I know rich padula passed away recently. There’s children and other relatives in the local area who may have social media or can be located in order to get legitimate permission to access the land itself. I assume that at least one of them may know whom the land is or was to be transferred to in the event of the death of said property owner. If anyone is interested in following up on that lead it might be a productive and less stressful way around that obstruction. If it was my dad or son or brother I’d definitely want to contact land owner and gain full permission for search parties as we all know that law enforcement here is not going to humble themselves enough to ask or initiate assistance in a realistic time frame as is clearly visible in multiple separate missing persons cases of much more obvious heinous activity behind.
And I’d be glad to have permission so that could clear up any hesitation in the public for safety concerns and such.
If nobody has tried these people yet maybe Worth it really to go ahead and touch base. I’m sure there is some kind of information and assurance that could be gained by doing so. As I said, Rich has passed but the obituary says he is survived by his son, Logan, and daughter-in-law, Shannon; grandchildren, Finn and Kai; brother James; sister Nancy (Warren) Coffman; nephews Justin (Krystle) Coffman and Kevin Coffman; and niece Allyson Coffman
If nobody has attempted going that route as inconvenient as it may be portrayed by l.e my suggestion is to make contact anyway and disregard any attempt to dissuade your attempt to do so. It’s someone you love.
Go ahead and send some messages out. I believe that you can get some direction and support there..Hopefully. rooting for y’all to find your guy. There are a bunch of trolls that are here on this thread. Don’t let it get you down. It’s not as close to covelo as people are trying to make it sound.
The majority of us locals have all been around that area and I’ve even hunted there with my ex husband AND OUR DOG TOO.
I’m thinking less of the negative side and really trying to get my head wrapped around this. I’ll bet that if anything he may have slipped on the ground foliage very slick in the rain and winter time. He may be stuck in a place he can not easily navigate out of.
I’ve heard of good outdoorsmen being in situations like this for up to three and a half weeks easy in similar weather conditions and aside from being unable to make their way out without outside assistance had survived just fine. Goodluck to ya. Don’t worry about the crappy negative feedback here dismiss that and keep moving forward and don’t take no or any unsolicited pessimistic advice on this from anyone not even the law.
Around here we are all pretty much resigned to the fact that if we don’t do it ourselves..we are not going to see much in the way of action or justice. Sad but the truth.

Look too much speculation. No one here knows who’s permission they had or not. Facts are people get lost in the woods. While lost you may or may not stumble onto property owned by someone. After all you are lost. Not purposely trying to ignore property rights or lines. Plus if I were lost and found a no trust passing sign. I’d be grateful. Hoping I would find some help soon. Considering none of you are even recognizing the fact that all your countries have signed agreement to rob every single one of us of owning anything including the land you pretend is so important to you it’s worth killing over. Maybe you better start looking into how your county plans on relieving you of your land and everything else in their climate action plan. And how they can tax or regulate you right out of it.
