As fires rage in California, firefighters across the country have come to the aid of the beleaguered state. The remote area east of Hoopa has crews from as far away as Maine helping fight the huge fire. The Red Salmon Complex, as the fire burning in that area is called, continues to march towards covering 100,000 acres. It has 91,672 under its belt already and is poised to swallow more today. And firefighters have only been able to achieve 16% containment–most of that in the northwest corner of the incident.

The community at the Forks of the Salmon received an Evacuation Order yesterday when a spot fire jumped off the northeastern part of the fire. This further impacted the communities in Siskiyou County which are already reeling under the effects of the deadly Slater Fire.

The Plan:

Firefighters will be working in the southwest corner of the Complex using fire against fire to remove vegetation before the main fire can use it to push even closer to the Hoopa Reservation, Willow Creek, and communities along Hwy 299.

To the south and the northeast, firefighters will continue building lines and setting up community and structure protection.

The Weather:

According to the team working the Complex,

Areas of smoke will blanket the fire today. Winds should remain terrain driven at lower elevations, with southerly gusts at times on ridges and in aligned drainages.
