Femur of Missing Woman, Sheila Franks, Identified; Found Downstream of Where Danielle Bertolini’s Remains Were Located
Sheila Franks
The family of Sheila Franks, who was reported missing in early 2014, received news that DNA from a human femur found in June of this year near Loleta matched hers. And, according to a family members of another woman who went missing within about a week of Sheila, Danielle Bertolini, the remains were found downstream from where Bertolini’s skull was discovered.
Although so far the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and the Fortuna Police Department haven’t responded to requests for information, family members of both of the two women who went missing within about a week of each other in early 2014 confirmed that Sheila’s femur was located.
“I spoke to Charlie, the Humboldt County [Coroner] to confirm the information that I received on my sister,” said Melisa Walstrom, Sheila’s sister who was told by her nephew. [We believe but haven’t been able to confirm this is Deputy Coroner Charles Van Buskirk.]
She wrote on a post speaking directly to her deceased sister on Humboldt Missing Five, a Facebook page, “The day has finally come and I am just as much of a wreck today as I was when I gave into the thought that you were missing, back in February of 2014.”

According to Teresa Budd, Danielle’s grandmother, “I was told…that Sheila’s femur was found downstream from Danielle’s.” Danielle’s skull was found near Blue Slide Road north of Rio Dell and Sheila’s femur was located not far from Loleta, according to some reports in the area of Crab Park.
Budd explained for the families of the missing women, the pain of not having justice makes life harder. “Every day it is a terrible thing we live with knowing the person of interest is running around,” she said.
Both Sheila and Danielle went missing from the Eel River Valley in Humboldt County. According to a quote attributed to since retired Lt. Wayne Hanson of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department in article in the Bangor Daily News from July of 2014, “Both women have blond hair and blue eyes, are similar in appearance and build, and travel in the same social circle….[They were last] seen with the same 43-year-old Fortuna man before they vanished.” But he also said, “That person of interest has been cooperative with us.” And, no arrests have been made in connection with the two women’s disappearances
However, Danielle’s grandmother said, “[While the identification of Sheila’s femur] was a shock but a blessing in disguise,..it gives me hope that they will get justice for the girls. Maybe people will get talking…”

You present some facts but not anywhere near all the facts. Indeed women kill less often but men kill men far and away more often than they kill women. That suggests that men do already select out women in their violence far more often then they focus their violence on women. Can it be improved so that few women ever have to fear violence from men? Probably but not by putting all the blame on men. It is a dilemma of society, not just of men. Reducing violence overall should be a start. Less violence could mean less women subject to violence although that’s not always true.

Humboldt co still has some of the most lenient CCW laws in California (due to remoteness and I will give props here, a tolerant and understandable sheriffs Dept). He also happened to be the jilted boyfriend of Sheila Franks CA – Sheila Franks, 37, Fortuna, 2 Feb 2014. Further investigation revealed that James Eugene Jones also knew Karen Mitchell Ca – Karen Marie Mitchell, 16, Eureka, 25 Nov 1997. LE also believes that two other disappearances are part of the same series: Christine Walters CA – Christine Walters, 23, Arcata, 14 Nov 2008 and Jennifer “Jade” Wilmer CA – Jennifer Wilmer, 21, Willow Creek, 13 Sept 1993. Consequently, they have dubbed Jones a Person of Interest, though not a suspect.

It seems that the saying if you wana murder someone and get away with then do it in Humboldt county is true. I remember years ago a security guard at palco was at work and was murdered. That would seem that it should have been top priority but no,it was swept under the rug as usual.
These girls families have had to pay for any searches that have taken place. I always see other communities sticking by families that have had their loved ones murdered. The police many times calling for media conferences and the community many times having money pooled together to help the families but not here and not in this unfortunate situation. I’m truly sorry for this crap!
There are definitely more ppl that know what happened and I beg of anyone reading this that does know something to please come forward. Enough years have gone by and maybe you were scared then but you dont have to stay quiet. Do something about this before it gets worse and it will.
Her name was Sandy Coppini. She was a sweet woman who never hurt anyone except her abusive husband by divorcing him.
Also can everyone please stay one the subject and not argue over ever belief or opinion you have on here. It’s a comment section; pretty much free for all. And believe me if the slow minded detectives won’t even process dna rape kits and other forensic evidence they have in hand, or follow up on statements already made to them, they sure aren’t going to be digging thru the comments on news reports for clues.
