Friends Ask Public to Support Widow of Fortuna Police Sergeant

Friends and family are asking the public to help support the widow of a longtime Fortuna police officer.
Sergeant Scott Hillman, who served the Fortuna Police Department for 27 years, died unexpectedly at age 58. Friends and family have set up a GoFundMe to help his wife, Melinda Hillman, who is unable to work due to an injury and is facing financial hardship on top of her grief.
Scott and Melinda were married for 22 years. According to the GoFundMe, the two were not only husband and wife but best friends.
Funds raised will go toward household bills, daily living expenses, and support while Melinda recovers from her injury.

Surely there is both life insurance and a widow’s pension to support this long time public service man’s widow. If not, shameful.
State payroll data shows total compensation for Fortuna Police Sergeants ranging from ($140,872) to ($196,836) due to overtime, incentive pay, and retirement contributions. WTF did they do with all that money?
I understand the intial costs of a death and medical emergency can be pretty hefty, but I also know that spouses of public servants tend to get quite a bit. Not only are they the recipient for all the deceased’s life insurance policies; they are also the recipient for any retirement benefits (401k, pension, SS, etc) of the deceased spouse. There is really no reason outside of an astronomical healthcare bill that that a police officer’s widow should need any help from a gofundme. This just seems like she’s trying to maintain the standard of living she’s used to. For shame.
Then don’t donate. It’s that simple. Using this an opportunity to push a negative political agenda is pathetic. Why Kym allows hateful comments like this to stand against her own rules is difficult to see.
