Adopt Me: Humboldt County Animal Shelter Folks Will Go to Long Lengths to Capture Your Attention

The Humboldt County Animal Shelter entered this weekend’s Kinetic Race with a creation that looked like it escaped from a Victorian fever dream: a giant black dog in a top hat stretched across a people-powered contraption with “Adopt Me” strapped to its side.

Behind the goofy spectacle was a real message. The shelter still has dogs and cats waiting for homes, and staff used Humboldt’s annual celebration of weirdness to shine a spotlight on adoptable animals.

If a gigantic kinetic dog can put itself out there emotionally, maybe you’re ready to bring home a shelter pet.

As we’re reeling over the betrayal of animals (and humans) by Miranda’s “Rescue,” here’s two thumbs up to Redwood Pals Rescue (and Sparky’s power train, Chris & Nick) and to the volunteers and staff at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter.

People are well aware that there are too many dogs in the shelter and have been for some time The problem is the food prices and veterinary prices have skyrocketed. The New York Times reported recently 60% increase in 10 years.
I have to start getting creative doing things differently instead of warehousing Dogs use the money to go entirely to the Humane Society for one thing and for another thing set up programs for seniors get help having dogs. Yes there’s a couple of little vouchers for $250 here there but do you realize a trip to the vet can easily cost a couple thousand without warning and that can happen many times over the span of a lifetime. What if there was a program that helped pay for insurance insurance . Good citizen classes that can be a ticket into an apartment or house owner rental mortgage requirements or whatever. People are well well aware that their to me, Dogs in the shelter that’s not the problem..

spay neuter helps, but that’s been going on for a long time and honestly that’s not much money when it goes towards animal care.

Another issue is mobility. People don’t have the stable jobs. They used to it have to move more frequently than they have in the past..

locally it would be nice to have a few dog runs over at Newburgh Park towards the back. I’ve heard of them in other cities and other parks where there are gated runs. The dogs can run individually, and they have a ball tossed for them or whatever but not have to be in the dog park pack such runs can help socialize dogs and get them used to ignoring other dogs while they play. Baby, some money that comes out of the Miranda situation can go towards funding. Dog runs and a few places around the city not everyone has a yard..
