Eureka Man Dies After High-Speed Chase; Humboldt Sheriff Had Active Child Sex Abuse Case Against Him

Death Investigation

A 62-year-old Eureka man died early Saturday morning after leading Redding police on a high-speed chase and then shooting himself, according to the Redding Police Department and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man as Adam James Bean IV. Bean was known locally as Joe Bean and was associated with Z&J’s Asian Subs in Eureka, according to sources familiar with him.

Lt. Jesse Taylor of the sheriff’s office confirmed Monday that HCSO had an active felony case against Bean under Penal Code 288, which covers lewd or lascivious acts against a child under 14.

According to a Redding Police Department press release, officers attempted to stop a vehicle at approximately 1:51 a.m. Saturday near the Interstate 5 and Highway 299 interchange for suspected DUI and vehicle code violations. The driver fled northbound on I-5, looped back southbound through the Mountain Gate area, and exited into the City of Shasta Lake before stopping on Cascade Boulevard near Shasta Dam Boulevard. Lt. Taylor told Redheaded Blackbelt that Bean’s vehicle reached speeds of 140 mph during the chase.

According to RPD, when officers approached, the driver got out of the vehicle holding a handgun and shot himself in the head. Three officers and a police cadet on a ride-along were present. Two witnesses at a nearby gas station confirmed hearing a single shot. Officers provided medical aid until paramedics arrived, but Bean was pronounced dead at the scene. The handgun Bean used was collected as evidence.

Bean had a CCW (Carry Concealed Weapon) permit issued from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Lt. Taylor said that once HCSO learned of the sexual abuse allegations, the agency promptly suspended Bean’s CCW permit.

Redding PD noted in its release that Bean was aware he was under felony investigation at the time of the pursuit.

Social media posts indicate Bean served as a military police officer in the U.S. Army in the early eighties.

Redding police detectives are continuing to investigate the events leading up to the shooting.

Anyone with information relevant to the HCSO investigation is asked to contact the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at 707-442-7251.

140 MPH, what was he driving, the space shuttle? That’s one hell of a ride along.

New cars are fast!!! Here are some top speeds. Most have small, turbocharged engines. Elantra 155 mph, Subaru 145, Mini Cooper 155, Volkswagen GTI 155mph, Mustang 145 mph. (CARWOW)

Those Mini Coopers are fast. Even the S model does 145 mph. How it stays on the ground beyond 110 I have no idea.

I had a unknown sport coupe pass me on the right, whe they were traveling down the northbound Sunset ramp in Arcata. I was traveling on northbound 101 at 65 to 70, and the sport coup passed me like I was parked on the side of Interstate 5.

Why mention the business name in Eureka in such an ambiguous manner? Was he the owner? Did any allegations stem from there? If not, then it seems irresponsible to mention it.

It’s on another link on the same page. This is what you’ll find. They’re a signatory on the LLC. Should note that if there’s 15 people listed as agents, not all may be displayed on a single webpage as they just won’t all fit. But the SoS filings will, thus the PDF versions.

My thoughts exactly. I am all for name and shame, but that seems like an innocent bystander took a hit.

Shameful… but I’m seeing Jesse Taylor (surname Taylor) mentioned… no Taylor King in the article? Maybe I missed it but it’s still good info, having been a victim of perjury myself, it’s very scary and despicable behavior for an LEO. I hope he’s been fired

I grew up with this man and his sister. His father was my school bus driver and janitor in Blue Lake. He was my friend on Facebook. His sister posted that he had died. He and his wife owned the subs place mentioned in the article. He loved to cook and often shared photos of his grilling masterpieces on FB. I feel very sad that this is the way his life ends. We will possibly never know if he was guilty of this accusation. My heartfelt condolences to everyone affected by this. I know he had grandchildren and I can’t imagine if the accusations came from them, how they must feel about this ending. What a horrifying experience for everyone. This is heartbreaking from every angle. Please be kind. We do not know the full story. Hopefully, the alleged victim(s) are getting the help they need to deal with this tragedy upon the possible tragedy of sexual assault. May the entire family eventually find peace and healing.

Guilty or not, his life was forever changed. Considering if it was the latter, the pain of social blowback and the losses he suffered and would continue to, as he was investigated, are immense. If he was guilty, he did not have the time to know that he could be rehabilitated IF he had the willpower and the support to make the change.
Yes. Sad all around!!!

Would have to agree with the people naming the restaurant seems irrelevant but sounds like he probably dealt with some PTSD and just shows that you never really know what someone is struggling with these days! Very sad and tragic from every single angle

“Bean served as a military police officer in the U.S. Army in the early eighties”

Serving as a MP during peacetime is so traumatic that it leads to child sexual abuse? That’s a bit of a leap.

It wouldn’t be trauma from combat per se that led him to become an abuser… I agree with you that it’s a leap, but the suggestion is well within the realm of possibility.

Base security can be anywhere on Earth. It may be peaceful at Ft Benning, but not so much in a forward base in Iraq. PTSD could arise from an attack or situations not on our soils. Or an MP for an ally installation. Or even support for a UN or NATO convo to….Gaza.

He wasn’t found guilty of that charge and it said the officer committed perjury so he may have been innocent but regardless the whole thing destroyed his life because once accused of that shit guilty or not people look at you in a different light and it follows you. If he was innocent the scrutiny of the investigation damaged his image and would drive him to suicide because it follows you.

There are no credible accusations of perjury related to this case. Another commenter got confused and mixed up the names of two completely different police officers.

This comes as a big blow, my friends live right next door to Z & J, found out about this from my buddy that was actually dropping me off at my friend’s house next door and he told me about it, I thought he was pulling my chain until I looked it up myself, what shame, dude gave me one of those Boba tea Keychains for free because I was going for their smoothies because they were good, as for the allegations, that was something I wasn’t prepared to hear about at all, guess no more pulled pork subs and strawberry smoothies no more, Z and J was around for years, what a shame to see it honestly become closed permanently

Just how life can be unpredictable… was a student at HSU years ago and have stopped at Z&J subs two times, loved their food and met him too. Was talking to friends tonight and checking out the places in Humboldt County we went to when we were in college and saw this news… Not sure how to react… It’s unbelievable how people do things that changes their lives and I hope his wife be strong and continue running the business they both loved…and we loved.
