Press release from the Eureka Police Department:

On February 13, 2026, at approximately 4:17 p.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department (EPD) responded to the intersection of W. Wabash Avenue and Broadway following a report of an injury traffic collision. Upon arrival, officers located the involved vehicle and a pedestrian. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.

As standard protocol, personnel from EPD’s Criminal Investigations Unit and Major Injury Team responded to conduct the investigation. During the investigation, several witnesses were contacted. The following are the current facts known about the collision:

  • The 83-year-old, male pedestrian was crossing westbound across Broadway within the marked pedestrian crosswalk.

  • The RV was turning northbound onto Broadway from W. Wabash Avenue.

  • The RV collided with the pedestrian prior to the pedestrian reaching the double yellow line designating the turn lane for Broadway.

  • Preliminary investigation indicates the collision was caused by the driver of the RV failing to yield to the pedestrian in the crosswalk while turning.

  • Alcohol or impairment do not appear to be factors in the collision.

  • The victim had a dog with him at the time of the collision. Animal Control has confirmed the dog is alive and is with associates of the decedent.

This incident remains under active investigation. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information that may assist investigators is urged to contact EPDs Criminal Investigations Unit at (707) 441-4300.

Most likely wrongful death in civil court.

I know that this is no excuse but driving on Broadway is like a video game with traffic, pedestrians and bicycles coming at various speeds from too many directions, there are driveways, side streets and people making lane changes all at once. Lots of people are just passing through and don’t know the road. Big trucks mixed in. Then there are either no traffic lights or dozens in the same location. It’s hard to see it all of it at once. I try to avoid going there for any reason.

A good pre-license test to drive would be pushing a shopping cart around Costco without crashing into another cart or shopper. Would eliminate a few drivers.

One better: navigate a parking lot with people shoving shopping carts AT you and you have to miss every one of them AND stay in your lane.

I grew up in New Jersey/ New York/ New England. We were taught from birth to never trust the drivers. Never, Crosswalks don’t protect you. Never allow them the opportunity to run you over. I am not blaming the poor victim- may he RIP. At 83 years old he’s probably moving pretty slow and must trust the drivers to see him. But I am saying that I have seen pedestrians in CA walk directly in front of moving vehicles just assuming the cars will stop! Crazy back where I come from…Do not trust the drivers! They have metal cars and trucks and you are only flesh and blood…Please teach your children

From years of cycling and having been hit a few times, you learn to not just look at the vehicle, but right in the eyeballs of the driver to see if they even notice you. You have to adjust for perceived intent. Nothing matters if they’re not aware you’re there, even if they’re only travelling at walking speed. I would not expect an elderly person to be environmentally aware as someone much younger and not able to move out of the way quickly but that goes back on the driver to be absolutely sure no one is in the crosswalk to begin with, regardless if that person is paying attention or not. They have the right of way. Use your horn if they’re just bee-bopping around. Don’t just go.

Yes, i try to make eye contact with people in the turn lanes. If they’re wearing sunglasses i move my hand, palm upward, in the questioning “Okay?” or “WTF?” gesture… then when they nod at me and motion me through, and all other drivers are firmly stopped, I proceed. Sure, i respect the laws; but i don’t trust humans to reliably follow them!

I was taught the same, many decades ago. But, eye contact goes out the window, so to speak, when the windows are too dark to see into on a sunny day.

I am saying I have seen drivers in CA drive directly towards pedestrians who are visibly, lawfully, safely using the crosswalk just assuming the pedestrians will get out of their way!

Intersection in one of the worst Countywide. Head on traffic coming at you if leaving Costco while trying to make left hand turn onto Broadway. I’m all for the Eastbound traffic heading West towards Costco getting a red light. It’s worth the extra minute or two while waiting. I have missed pedestrians crossing. Option 2. Take the crosswalk out all together. Drivers are looking directly into the Sun. No studies needed. Take action plz City Council. Prayers to the driver. We all could be in the same shoes.

“Head on traffic coming at you if leaving Costco while trying to make left hand turn onto Broadway.”
The universe’s way of delivering punishment to those who choose to give their money to Costco.

Option 3. Redesign the intersection so it’s not so dangerous for everyone.

Really? Someone wants to keep the intersection dangerous?

I think that is a particularly dangerous intersection, with three streets meeting. It’s seems a disproportionate number of accidents are there, especially involving pedestrians. There should be a left turn lane and signal for eastbound Wabash traffic. Everything I make that turn it feels dicey. You have to avoid westbound traffic on Wabash and keep an eye on the crosswalk too, all on the very broad Broadway. This intersection has taken too many lives.

Now will Caltrans work nights to install left turn only arrows, before straight ahead traffic is allowed at both of those intersections (Wabash & 14th turning left onto Broadway 101), holding back the GREEN TO CROSS LIGHT FOR PEDESTRIANS UNTIL ALL CARS HAVE TURNED LEFT, SO CROSSING IS DONE ONLY WITH CARS GOING STRAIGHT? Do we need a petition?

While visiting Carlsbad I observed the traffic. Pedestrians and vehicles never go at the same time. It seems much safer. And another thought for safety here, all the lights should be the same. Right now it’s hard to know which ones are protected and which ones aren’t and I’ve lived in this area for3ver.
