[Update: Major Injury Collision] Toyota, Lay’s Truck Collide on Lake Earl Drive in Crescent City

Ambulance RequestedA traffic collision involving two vehicles was reported late Tuesday morning on Lake Earl Drive in Crescent City, according to California Highway Patrol dispatch information.

The crash occurred in the 2400 block of Lake Earl Drive and involved a Toyota sedan and a commercial Lay’s truck out of Oregon. CHP logs indicate that both vehicles were in the roadway following the collision.

Scanner traffic indicated the occupant of the Toyota sedan was not moving, with injuries initially described as unknown. Due to the situation, responders requested a second ambulance to the scene.

Multiple emergency units were dispatched, and traffic in the area is being controlled by first responders on scene.

This incident remains under investigation, and information may be updated as more details become available.

Update 10:50 a.m.: CHP has updated their information system to list this collision as a major injury incident.

Update 11:03 a.m.: The Lays chip truck, a Ford Transit van, is reported to have lost its left front tire and sustained a bent front axle. Robertson’s tow has been requested to recover the vehicle.

So the tire failure was the culprit, or was due to crash? Usually if latter, we are not given that info as it is not germane to the issue.

The information about the bent axle was probably transmitted as part of the tow request, and not “given” to anyone.
Lake Earl Drive, at that location, is perfectly straight for 1/2 mile, so my money’s on some distracted driving.
Also, per the incident log, this was reclassified from major injury to minor injury, at 11:48.

Wonder if this is the same Lay’s truck that crashed into the Smith River a few months ago.
