Proposition 50 Passing Easily in California and Humboldt County

Election results featureCalifornia voters have approved Proposition 50, a ballot measure that redraws the state’s congressional map and could have major implications for national politics in 2026. The Associated Press reports that the measure “may do the most to shape national politics going forward,” as it “could flip as many as five Republican-held U.S. House seats to Democratic control in the 2026 midterm elections.”

Locally, Humboldt County voters continued to back Proposition 50 by a clear margin in the final election night report. 61.18% voted Yes (14,229 votes) and 38.82% voted No (9,030 votes). A total of 23,259 ballots were cast in the county, bringing turnout to 27.05% of registered voters

According to AP, Proposition 50 is “a response to Trump’s gerrymandering push to keep the U.S. House under Republican control in the 2026 midterms.” With its passage, California joins other states that have recently revised their congressional maps, potentially influencing the balance of power in Washington.

While statewide results are still being finalized, early returns indicate that Proposition 50 is passing comfortably across California. The measure’s approval is expected to trigger the above new congressional boundaries before the next midterm election cycle, reshaping several key districts in the state including ours.

This may be the only redistricting that the courts eventually allow to stand due to the fact it was voted on by the People of California.

. . . looks like we finally brought a fair map to this knife fight. If anyone’s worried this gives Democrats an advantage, don’t worry, we’re only evening the playing field until Texas agrees to put down its map-twisting magic wand. The sky is still up there.
Re. all election results, the Dems just took a big step toward getting their groove back.

If this was truly about Texas, then explain why did Gavin Newsom vetoed 1248 more than 2 years ago in early October of 2023…???

Because, you see, 1248 was all about requiring Independent Redistricting Committees in California in Major Cities…

It happened to be cointroduced by the League of Women Voters of California…

Newsom wasn’t having any part of that, and that was way before Trump was reelected, so NEWSOM vetoed Independent Redistricting Committees, WAY BEFORE whatever Texas did…

And, he dishonesty claimed that he vetoed it due to a “tight budget”, when it would not have cost California a dime until 2030…

Clearly a lie…

So, anyone that believes that Newsom throwing his weight behind California gerrymandering, against Independent Redistricting Committees, way back in early October2023, had anything whatsoever to do with Trump, and/or with what what Texas did, is as gullible as they come…

Suckers…!!!

Every one of you were willingly hoodwinked by Gavin Newsom, and blinded by your bias, that Gavin Newsom used against YOU ALL, TO HIS ADVANTAGE, NOT YOURS….

Prop 50 only passed, because so many people in California that voted yes on 50, are so damn gullible, and/or are so damn democratically unethical…

AKA… …”SO DAMN EASY…!!!”

PERIOD…

Gavin Newsom passing Prop 50 in California, was as “easy” as Senate Democrats taking SNAP candy from a bunch of special needs babies, and then convincing them all, it was all about preserving their healthcare, and that they Democrats took it all, just for the hapless babies’ own good…

You said it, not me…

(You might want to proofread it…???)

Unlike all the “yes” voters, Newsom’s pack of unabashed lies damn sure didn’t make a fool out of me…

That’s why I voted “NO”, along with, and aligned with, my Democratic principles…

Gerrymandering is undemocratic, period.

Prop 50, along with anyone that pushed it, and/or supported it, was, therefore, also undemocratic…

It was dirty pool, and Newsom was the one holding the cue stick…

It ain’t rocket science…

Gavin Newsom vetoed California Assembly Bill 1248 in October 2023, which would have required large cities and counties to create independent redistricting commissions by 2030. He supported the reform’s intent but rejected it over its high, unfunded costs—tens of millions in state-reimbursable expenses, saying it should be addressed through the regular budget process.

Since 2010, state legislative and congressional maps have been drawn by an independent citizens’ commission, which limits overt partisan manipulation. However, because California’s population is overwhelmingly Democratic in most regions, the resulting maps still produce strong Democratic majorities.

https://apnews.com/article/redistricting-california-gerrymandering-independent-commission-553a08590ac29e0dd8115073663e8f2a

“Had Newsom signed the measure, California could have become the first state to mandate redistricting commissions for local jurisdictions over certain sizes, said Dan Vicuna, national director of redistricting and representation for Common Cause.

Boundaries for state and local legislative districts must be redrawn every 10 years to align with the latest U.S. census figures. Historically, that process has been carried out by elected officials who have a political interest in shaping districts to their advantage — a tactic known as gerrymandering.

But California voters shifted the responsibility for drawing U.S. House and state legislative districts to an independent panel of citizens following the 2010 census. Since then, voters in Colorado, Michigan, New York, Utah and Virginia have created redistricting commissions with varying levels of independence.

Some cities — including Austin, Texas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico — also have adopted independent redistricting commissions. But such commissions remain relatively rare in local governments. In California, a 2016 state law allowed, but didn’t require, counties and cities to create redistricting commissions. More than a dozen have voluntarily done so, and separate state laws have specifically mandated redistricting commissions for Los Angeles County, San Diego County and a few other counties.

But the city of Los Angeles is among many local governments that remain in charge of drawing their own districts. A panel of academic experts recommended this year that independent commissions composed of city residents be used for future redistricting of the Los Angeles City Council and school board.

The legislation vetoed by Newsom would have applied more broadly. It sought to require independent redistricting commissions in all cities and counties with more than 300,000 residents and in community college or public school districts with more than 500,000 residents. Elected officials, political candidates, their larger financial donors and lobbyists would have been excluded from the commissions.

Despite the veto, the California legislation still could provide a model ahead of the next round of redistricting based on the 2030 census, said Justin Levitt, a professor at Loyola Marymount University Law School in Los Angeles who created the All About Redistricting website.

“Advocates will certainly press the issue in other states,” Levitt said, “and I’d be surprised if at least some other states didn’t seriously consider what California declined to do.”…”…

“In a statement, the Democratic governor said he supported the “goal of ensuring community control over the redistricting process” but was concerned a mandate to create independent commissions could end up costing the state tens of millions of dollars. ➡️ It marked the second time in four years that he has vetoed legislation requiring independent redistricting commissions for some local governments. ⬅️ ”

“Ask AI”

“When was the first time that Gavin Newsom vetoed legislation to require independent redistricting committees…???”

-AI Overview-

“The first time Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed legislation to require independent redistricting committees was in 2019, when he vetoed a bill by Senator Ben Allen that would have required counties with more than 400,000 residents to set up such commissions.

Newsom’s stated reasons for the 2019 veto were that local jurisdictions were already authorized to create their own commissions and that the bill would create a state-level financial cost that should be addressed through the budget process.

2019 veto:

Governor Newsom vetoed a bill that would have mandated independent redistricting commissions for large counties.

Reasoning:

He argued that local governments were already empowered to create commissions and that the cost of such a mandate should be handled through the state’s budget process.

Subsequent veto:

Newsom later vetoed a similar bill in 2023, AB 1248, which would have required various cities and counties to establish independent redistricting commissions.”

___________________________________

CLEARLY, Newsom has a LONG track record of vetoing Bills against gerrymandering introduced in order to establish Independent Redistricting Committees, going all the way back to 2019…

For Newsom to subsequently push pro gerrymandering prop 50, as if he was only doing it as a response to Texas, simply doesn’t jibe…

Newsom’s M.O. has been “pro gerrymandering”, since AT LEAST 2019…

SO, Let’s not kid ourselves…

People that voted “Yes” on Prop 50 got played…

But wasn’t Texas required to “redistrict” their maps by the court? Right or left, politicians have left honesty and fairness on the back burner and turned to corruption and party agendas over what is best and what is right for all the people.

The scary fact is that one of the party agenda has turned to so much hate and division that it’s party members have normalized violence and hate and can’t even reconize the path they are following Is one that they claim to be against. It is no longer what is best for the people and the country, it is about party agendas built on corruption and greed.

How else do politicians who claim to be working for the people, go from “average income” to multi millionaires in a couple of years. I worked for public service for over 30 years and even with a “livable” retirement, I am still pinching pennies.

Democrats getting their “groove back” simply means more corruption, lost billions in waste and fraud to politician family backed NGOs, more pay offs from the power industries, and more “trains to nowhere”. California is already in the toilet, it is only waiting for the flush.

Although Texas has previously been required by federal courts to redraw its districts because of unconstitutional or racially discriminatory gerrymandering, its most recent redistricting in 2021 was not court-ordered. It was a routine post-census process controlled entirely by the Republican legislature.

Rather than correcting unfair maps, this round of redistricting further entrenched partisan advantages, reducing the number of competitive districts and diluting minority voting strength according to multiple lawsuits. So, the current controversy and reactions from California officials are not about a court-mandated effort to make Texas maps fairer—they stem from a perception that Texas deliberately made them less fair, solidifying Republican control despite the state’s rapid demographic diversification.

Baloney. If Texas pulled back from their redistricting tomorrow, California will not pull back from their’s. The redistricting has occurred and is set until the 2030 census. Whereupon California may reinstate the commission but likely legislators will find another crisis and adjust the commission to suit.

In the meantime what was touted as a brawl between Texas and California has become a free for all where a dozen states are now doing the same thing. And the referee, the Supreme Court, hasn’t even issued their rolling on any redistricting. The dice are in motion and you nor anyone else knows where it will end

But no one else was required to change their Constitution in order to redistrict. So that is not likely to be material.

What might be is the pending Supreme Court decision if they decide race can not used to form districts because California did just that. The Democrats made a big deal of keeping districts where black voters elected black representatives in order to make sure they did get the votes needed to change the Constitution. So if such factors are declared invalid for use in redistricting, the redistricting plan in California will be declared invalid.

“While the new plan dilutes Republican voting power throughout California, it won’t significantly affect racial representation, according to McGhee. McGhee’s analysis found the number of Asian-influence, Black-influence and Latino-majority districts remains nearly identical under the proposed plan.”

You have a point. The supreme Court is extraordinarily biased in favor of Republicans right now.

They’re 2019 decision that they can’t address political gerrymandering is abundantly clear evidence of that.

It may come into play but it seems that the Californians were smart enough to redistrict in a way that would avoid this issue.

Seeing political party in the Courts recently decision means that the same was going on in previous Court rulings but in favor of the Democrats. BTW what was the case you mentioned about political gerrymandering?

But I think that California’s ruling party (never the people at all) was not that smart. While their unabashed political gerrymandering might pass muster under the presumed decision of the Supreme Court, there are many districts created using the voting rights bill that remained from the Commission’s redistricting and they are open question. They can’t go back to the voting rights bill guidance anyway. It will be a whole new game and California is really screwed with left hand threading in charge for the foreseeable future. But race based districts will be a thing of the past no.matter what.

Not only black voter base, but the Hispanic neighborhoods that were not so covertly carved out. It’s literally there in black and white.

And Mcghee is a gaslighting liar when he claims no consideration/impact of race, when in the next breath he said this :The proposal would affect only congressional districts, not state-level representation. Considering Humboldt interests are now ka-noodled up all the way from Marin to Modoc that would be a lie. And I’m embarrassed that my neighbors actually believe all those communities can be adequately represented by a single person and actually voted yes to eliminate the congressional independent districting committee, and approve this trash gerrymandered, cheating map cos-play. Talk about being a pawn, and willingly! 😆 Spank me harder Newsom.

A TRO or temporary injunction is a very real possibility and then Newson and his goons are going to be called on to the carpet to explain his racist manipulations.

Now our honest politicians have the power to redistribute power how ever they want till the next census.
Maybe we could get a politician to make an actual plan on helping small business in California make more money that works?
Actually helping families and people?
I have Trump fatigue. All our problems are because a 80 year old orange fat man?

…and your complaints and description of our president will make sure we all come together, right? You should be aware that he was elected with all 7 swings states, the popular vote and the electoral college by wide margins. Maybe you missed the government class that talks about what elections mean. He is there for the next 3 years and appears to be working for a number of things that would float all boats. So far he appears to be a “working” president.

You have the freedom to say whatever you want, however, trashing President Trump and blaming all the ills on him is also getting tiresome. All of our problems could be laid at the feet of local government. We have empty store fronts and our economy is in the toilet. That’s a local problem not a fed problem. Our virtue is feeding the homeless and caring more about them than the community at large.

Look around. California, in general, is a rudderless ship with no one at the helm who knows what they are doing. Since democrats are in charge of everything and will now have even more power, perhaps we should let some of the blame go to a one party system in the state soon to be even more one sided.

Something to think about.

We voted to keep a dictatorship?? Dictators are notorious for not liking elections; I think this counts as an oxymoron.

Now, if you’d said that in a Democrat-dominated state the majority of voters had chosen to disenfranchise Republican voters in a fistfight with Texas’ Republican-dominated government’s cheating, that would be more accurate.

Would you maybe be happier in Texas, or Mississippi, or another Republican-dominated state that’s not a dictatorship?

Well that was the spin. Keep the government closed to make it appear a critical point has been reached and voters need to take action. Blame Trump then frame every election as a fight against Trump. Spend millions on a proposition to change a perfectly serviceable procedure.

The issue is not that someone else should move away from liberal California. But it is that liberal California can’t deal with different opinions. It will keep hurling towards the cliff telling screaming passengers shut up.

The cliff-

“Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that California is facing a $12 billion budget deficit, spurred by soaring costs for social services as the state’s economy teeters from President Donald Trump’s chaotic tariffs strategy.

But the size of Newsom’s budget proposal remains virtually unchanged from an earlier version in January, when the governor projected a modest surplus, underscoring that runaway expenses for subsidized health care and other state programs are the biggest long-term challenges.”

Democrats have been gerrymandering for decades now, in states mostly in the far east and midwest. Also, California long ago passed a bill that required a citizens committee to redraw any district lines. It required that any redistricting go through this commmittee that was voted on and by the citizens of California.

So, essentially Newsom just jumped on the anti, anything Trump bandwagon and got the Democrats sufficiently duped to vote for this redistricting even though there was an existing approved procedure to get that done democratically. Democracy is truly at risk, or so say the Democrats.

Hypocrisy at its best, brought to you by the “Liberalism is a mental disorder” crowd.

Everything stupid that I have witnessed in my 64 years has been done by Republicans. Everything smart I have ever seen has been done by Democrats. Here we are in 2025 and the place is filled to the gills with more Republican morons who want to make sure they are part of the next stupid thing that Republicans do. Ya’all really are a bunch of dull tools.
