Deceased Person Discovered Near Jacobs Avenue in Eureka

Commander Wayne Rabang of the Eureka Police Department spoke to us at the scene. [Video by Ryan Hutson]

Around 5 p.m. on Monday, a deceased individual was discovered in the 2600 block of Jacobs Avenue just north of Eureka. A reader told us, “I was there for a viewing and [police] rolled up as we left and taped off the area.”

The Eureka Police Department responded to the scene and conducted an initial investigation. EPD Commander Wayne Rabang told us in a video interview that there is currently no suspicion of foul play. While the cause of death has not been officially confirmed, he said the circumstances suggest the individual may have died by suicide.

This is a developing story, and additional details may become available as the investigation proceeds and next of kin are notified.

We want to take this moment to remind our readers that mental health struggles can affect anyone. If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress, help is available.

Very unfortunate this individual was not able to get the help they needed to keep going. And they may have solved their problem but friends and family are usually left with unanswerable questions and unresolved feelings.

With few exceptions, terminal illness being one, taking your own life is a permanent solution to a temporary problem – and even in cases of terminal illness there are times and places to do things in a way that won’t come as a shock to friends and family.

All judgy now? Sometimes “help” is worse than pretty much anything else because it comes on other people’s terms. Sometimes those terms are unacceptable for individuals who treasure their independence more than life.

Did they commit suicide right next to the funeral home? Odd.

“Loss of a life partner.”
At 20+ years in and both Wife and I now preparing for retirement, I feel for the elder in this story. In another 20 years (fingers crossed) from now, I can’t say the idea wouldn’t pop into my head were I in a similar situation.

My condolences to the family and friends. Rest in Peace my dear elder. May this person’s god have mercy on their soul.

Seeing a partner, a loved one, or someone who has been a part of the fabric of your life gone can cause many who seem fit and strong to break. If this is true, Kym, this is why funeral homes need to have trained counselors present for viewings. For many, hope flies away at that moment, and sometimes you need another to ground you, so you too don’t fly away.

For clarity, the viewing at the funeral home was unrelated to the person who took their life.

WHAT!!!!! You dont say the inept epd is declaring a dead body not suspicious. You don’t say. When was the last time they truely investigated anything? Eureka must have the highest per capita none suspicious random deaths of any city. If they believe it was suicide why not say why they believe that? How did they come to that conclusion and are willing to state that but refuse to state how they came to it? Can we get at least one law enforcement agency up here to do their jobs?

Fortuna takes a month to get a search warrent on a child molester, they crash their vehicles on simple traffic violations, epd is well know for murdering people (#remembertommymclain), anyone else remember the shootout they did also over a stolen vehicle that riddled businesses and other private property with bullet holes throught 6th and 5th streets. CHP is functionally useless as they REFUSE to do anything that isn’t going through Eureka or on a highway(deputy kyle nielson does traffic enforcement meanwhile he and his wife drive little suped up rice rockets that wouldnt pass any state ref inspection). APD can’t solve a murder with dozens of witnesses. And Jesus christ the problems with the sheriff’s department, why is honsal one of the highest payed sheriff’s in the state, and the highest payed county employee yet they have budget issues and can’t retain officers because they pay shit. Why was deputy Mathew Arellano who crashed his vehicle and lied about it in 2021 aloud to “resign” and keep his post certification instead of being fired? Why was deputy Howard Ryan Hill not fired after he crashed a sherrifs vehicle fresh out of the academy after receiving an award about being a good driver, then jumped the fence to his neighbors property to weedwack it because he didn’t like the way it looked and injured his shoulder, goes out on disability for 6 months then is PROMOTED to detective just so he can leave a few months later to take a job with the DA, he now makes 200k a year(transparency california is a fun resource to see how we are being fucked) after violating many laws.

Law enforcement in Humboldt is a joke to say the very least.

How would me spending time in jail change the fact that our local law enforcement are pretty much useless. The property crime is off the charts they refuse to do anything about. Damn near every dead person is deemed not suspicious. Not one agency can do their jobs correctly. The corruption is rampant in our local LEOs. Run an audit on officers using their access to information and see how many of them abuse it for personal gain, I know for a FACT many officers who use their access to run back ground checks on their exs new boyfriends(small community everyone knows everyone and everyone has slept with everyone). Maybe you should spend a night and see the corruption first hand.

Everything you state may be correct, but, there are a plethora of other articles to post this. People are grieving.

“Discovered” was poor word choice and does not represent what took place. This is a horribly sad case. I heard the details over the scanner. I haven’t been taken aback by a situation like that in quite some time. I hope his loved ones can eventually recover.

Perhaps with your attitude, life is giving you what you expect, eh? This is not the appropriate thread for your politics and angst. I am concerned about your mental health and inability to “read the room”. Take a breath, take a walk, chill.

Just humans humaning, not a local issue at all. Typical of the comment sections all over the internet. Humboldt is no more, no less than the rest of the on-line madness that has been unleashed since 2015. Perhaps you’d be happier living somewhere else that fits in with your opinions.

A very sad read. I feel so very sorry for the person who has died. It really does not matter in which the way they passed. The sad fact is that they chose suicide to end their grief. May the person forever RIP. Condolences to their family and friends.

He was my neighbor and he didn’t have much time left he was 93, and lived a good life and experience so many wonderful things life had to offer, it was time he felt and it was definitely for his sake from his health.
