Humboldt County Reaffirms Commitment to Sanctuary Protections

Press release from the County of Humboldt:

Humboldt County iconThe following is a statement on behalf of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors:

“We acknowledge the climate of concern within our community. Many residents have expressed deep apprehension about the hateful rhetoric and the growing divide currently evidenced across our nation–concerns that we fully share.

We seek to assure our community that we will continue to stand firmly in support of our family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors, no matter where they are from, what language they speak, who they love, how they worship, or how they vote.

As local government and community leaders, we specifically and unequivocally reaffirm our commitment to supporting all residents in our community. A relationship of trust between individuals and local agencies, including law enforcement and first responders, schools, hospitals, and service organizations, is essential to carrying out the basic functions of our community and assuring that all residents feel safe and healthy, and have access to the resources necessary to help make our community a safer and healthier place for all. We will ensure transparency of all immigration enforcement action conducted within our community. We acknowledge that trust cannot be cultivated or maintained when the county cooperates with ICE.

We commit to taking all necessary steps to ensure that this trust remains intact and that county and elected officials within the County of Humboldt make every effort to safeguard justice and equity for everyone. We stand prepared to assert and defend these commitments, including through multiple layers of legal and policy protections already in place at the state and local levels:

  • County of Humboldt’s Sanctuary Ordinance (Measure K Ordinance 2618): We reaffirm our support for Measure K, our Sanctuary Ordinance.
  • California Values Act (SB 54): This act prohibits state and local police from using funds or personnel to support immigration enforcement. This includes preventing police from asking about an individual’s immigration status, sharing a person’s personal information with immigration authorities, or arresting anyone only for having a deportation order or for most other immigration violations.
  • TRUTH Act (AB 2792): Ensures transparency and oversight regarding local law enforcement’s communication with federal immigration authorities.
  • TRUST Act (AB 4): Limits the circumstances under which local law enforcement can detain individuals on behalf of federal immigration authorities.

Whatever the future holds, we are resilient and ready to meet any challenges presented to our community. We, the County of Humboldt’s elected officials, remain committed to ensuring that our county is a place where all individuals are valued for their unique contributions and where every resident can live without fear.”

Community members are encouraged to contact your district’s supervisor if you have questions about laws in place to support all Humboldt County residents, including Humboldt County’s Sanctuary Ordinance.

You may also reach out to the Humboldt County Human Rights Commission, whose primary purpose is to recommend actions to the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors to address issues related to human rights in Humboldt County. The Humboldt County Human Rights Commission may be reached by email at [email protected] or by calling their toll-free voicemail line at 1-866-809-4373.

100%. I will remember this when my supervisor runs for reelection. Sadly, she’ll likely run unopposed.

Two questions:

1.) When did the Supervisors approve this statement?

Unless they did so while discussing an agenda item during an open meeting they likely committed one or more violation of the Brown Act.

2.) Why take an openly defiant stance when you know the Trump Admin is going after sanctuary cities, counties and states and potentially millions in funding are at risk?

Instead of putting a target on their backs it would be smarter to wait and see how the issue plays out on the ground and in the courts — but no one ever said the current crew is smart.

These people should be thrown in prison for knowingly aiding and abetting criminal illegal aliens. Really though, the deportations are just getting started, and the deportation rate will continue to accelerate.

Really? You really want people to be thrown into fucking prison because they think differently than you? What happens when the way you think is demonized by our current administration and they come after you? The othering has to stop, we’re all being played. We argue while the rich take control of our country, don’t you see that? Anything that can be done to divide makes us more easily conquered. While we throw neighbors under the bus they get richer, and don’t give two shits about any of us. We’re ALL expendable collateral damage to them, you can take that to the bank, because you aren’t going to be depositing all that money you’re going to save on eggs!

The rich were firmly in control over this country the last 4 years too. They play both sides. The rich you’ve been supporting are the same rich behind the scenes now. Former darlings of the left, Zuckerberg, Gates; sucking up to Trump. The left loved Elon Musk too, but maybe that was before your time. Like 15 years ago. Guess who was president then? A slickly packaged puppet for the rich. Imagine that!

I agree. I’m not a fan of politics or politicians of either side. None of them care. The crap that’ s been happening the past few weeks is beyond the pale though.

No I want illegal aliens thrown out of the country and people in supposed positions of authority who knowingly break federal laws to be thrown in prison, simply because that’s how a normal tax-paying peon like me would be treated. Why should there be a two-tiered justice system?

“harboring illegal aliens is a federal crime in the United States. The penalties include fines and prison time.
What is the law?
Title 8, U.S.C. § 1324(a) prohibits harboring unauthorized aliens.
The law applies to any place, including buildings.
The law applies to anyone who knowingly harbors an undocumented immigrant.
What are the penalties?
The penalties can range from fines to prison time.
The penalties can be enhanced if the violation involves:
Monetary gain
Serious bodily injury
Life in jeopardy
Death

ive never been a snitch, but maybe someone should bring this written testimony by the supervisors to the attention of ICE

Would the supervisor being punished make you feel better? Make you sleep more soundly at night? Make you more safe? No matter how you feel about any supervisor or anyone else personally, why would you wish to see community members hurt or punished? Ask yourself why you wish to see them reported. It’s insidious, don’t you think, for neighbor to turn against neighbor? Where would it end, do you think?

How would you feel if one of John Fords illegal aliens killed someone? Would you sleep better at night? Ford and his Cronies are really putting their necks on the line here. Plus they’re blatantly breaking the law. I don’t agree with our representatives going against federal law, especially if it results in the death of one of our community members.

I’d feel sad. Just like I feel when a white person kills someone. What I’m asking is why would you want to rat out neighbors? That’s also sad. I guess we just have different ways of looking at the world.

Actually yes, it would make me sleep very soundly at night, it probably would make me safer, and I think people abusing positions of government authority should be punished. I don’t think it’s insidious, it actually would give me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside, cause none of those assholes are my neighbor and I wouldn’t want them to be one. I’d probably leave a flaming bag of dog doo on their doorstep if one of them moved in next door.

Ok. You’re entitled to your opinion and world view. Mine differs from yours. My first inclination was to say something shitty to you, but what would that accomplish? Just more hate. But, do you not think the current administration is abusing positions of power? Are you fine with Musk? No one voted for him.

I’m not a big fan of musk for a lot of reasons, or any of those tech bros honestly. Presidents create agencies and departments all the time and appoint people, that’s their job. I don’t think that’s an abuse of power, at the same time, I don’t have to like the people the president appoints or the departments the president creates.

Illegal is illegal meaning against our laws. I am perfectly fine with immigration when they come in the front door, legally, however many of those who entered in the past four years are criminals committing heinous crimes so they are on the list to be deported. We aren’t worried about our ‘neighbors’ but I am definitely worried about the rise in crime here in Eureka. If it’s illegals committing those crimes we should report them to ice and have them deported. I also wish both the supervisors and our city council would concentrate on our economy here and reach out for businesses or industries to fill the void left after COVID and the Progressives took over. Virtue signaling has created nothing but empty buildings and struggling small businesses. All I can say to these elected officials is: “DO YOUR DAMNED JOB”!! The homeless are not interested in “affordable housing” on the parking lots downtown. Work on getting our economy out of the red with new tax dollars from some thriving businesses that might want to locate here. Give the citizens a chance to make a living wage. The goody two shoes approach to problems simply creates new problems. Solutions that work are what we need. Blocking ice is not an issue we should concentrate on, it just creates new problems i.e. more illegals moving in because we claim we will protect them.

Hateful rhetoric? Huhh? Turn off the corporate news. I am a citizen of this community and 100% support ICE rounding up criminals and deporting them. Where’s the compassion for me and my family? Every Law Enforcement officer in this county took an oath to support the US Constitution…….their overlords ignoring that and choosing to instruct them to violate their oath and Code of ethics is disgusting and just shows what cowards the BOS are. Let’s be sure when they want federal $ for some goofy trail project they’ll be right in the front of the line with their hands out and licking the feds’ boots.

You forgot to say… And the California Constitution. Which also goes for elected and nonelected County Employees, who serve at the pleasure of the BOS.

Funny thing about publicly elected officials’, they’re like Slinkies. They aren’t really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when they get pushed down a flight of stairs.

If you are here illegally you are a CRIMINAL, period. You are NOT a member of the community, coworker, friend or anything else this article mis-represents you as. If you are a citizen AND sworn in to support and protect the Constitution of the United States and its constitutional laws and you fail to do so by participating in the illegal “sanctuary” status you are a traitor and should be treated as such. Hopefully ICE will make raids over and over again until all illegals are gone for good and all the traitors and tried and convicted. Anyone who tries the sanctuary crap on my property will find that “My Property My Choice” is very real. I would definitely call ICE before any local law enforcement.

Who’s going to try that on your property? Do you think your property will be a super secret hide out and you’ll have to use all your spidey senses to suss out the illegal aliens hiding there? Simmer down now, Dirty Harry. Boy, oh boy.

Sanctuary cities, counties and states are completely illegal. Their leaders will soon be arrested for aiding and abetting criminals, if they stand in the way.
