As the Boise Fire continues to burn across northeastern Humboldt County and into Siskiyou County, firefighters are facing shifting weather conditions. Yesterday’s lower humidity and higher winds ahead of an approaching low-pressure system caused fire activity to intensify, particularly in the China Creek drainage. Despite these challenges, crews have made significant progress in their containment efforts.

As of today, the Boise Fire has grown to 12,842 acres, up from 12,622 acres yesterday. However, containment has seen a considerable boost, now standing at 28%, compared to 14% the previous day. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

California Team 11, led by Fogle, will arrive later today to begin shadowing California Team 10 on Friday and Saturday. Team 11 will assume command of the fire on Sunday, August 26, at 7 a.m.

Operational Update from Fire Command:

Firefighters patrolled the areas closest to structures overnight, as well as the Black Mountain Road area, where the fire has come down to the road. They are watching carefully for any still-smoldering material which can roll off the steep slope and ignite the unburned area across the road.
Firefighters completed the northern-most indirect line yesterday, leaving it prepared and plumbed should fire reach it. They have now hiked off the ridgeline and come back to camp, just in time for inclement weather.
The fire’s spread on the eastern side yesterday was well within indirect containment lines in the China Creek drainage. Crews estimate that they have another day of work on that line before it is completed, and they will continue that today as weather allows.

I hope the rain we got here in Arcata really dumps on the fire.

To compare the August complex fire of 2020, we lost 130,000 acres in 4 hours. Hard to imagine.
