Road to Lost Coast Trailhead and Needle Rock Visitor Center and Campground to Close for Road Repairs
California State Parks (California Department of Parks and Recreation)
The Needle Rock Visitor Center, Campground, and Lost Coast Trailhead at Sinkyone Wilderness State Park will be closed for the period of August 6, 2024 – November 16, 2024 due to a road repair project managed by Mendocino County Department of Transportation. Briceland Road (Mendocino County Road 435) will be closed from the intersection of Usal Road to the end of Briceland Road at the Needle Rock Visitor Center during the construction period. No vehicle or pedestrian access will be permitted during the construction window.
The Lost Coast Trail and trail camps will remain open for through-hikers only during the construction period, however, hikers must access the trail via alternative trailheads. Hikers should consult with the King Range National Conservation Area for Lost Coast Trail access from the north, and Sinkyone Wilderness State Park for Lost Coast Trail access from the south. I hope they don’t fix it up too nicely. I have great memories of the first time I made that hair-raising drive. In a 98 Civic!!! Started at Ferndale and made it all the way back to Hwy 1 at Usal with the stop off at Bear Harbor. Does the gate at Usal ever open any more?
