Park ACV – crummy airport lot getting upgrades

Airport parking

PARK IT A rendering of the proposed parking lot at the California Redwood Coast Hooven Ranch Humboldt County Airport* Via Humboldt County Department of Aviation

Article used with the kind permission of the Mad River Union:

The parking lot at the California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport in McKinleyville is undergoing a major face-lift that, when complete, will make parking easier, faster and virtually eliminate the need to wait in line to exit the lot.

But before parking becomes more convenient for travelers, it’s going to become less convenient, with 20 to 25 percent fewer parking spaces available during construction in the crowded lot.

The $7,036,562 project, funded by a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, began three-and-a-half weeks ago, with Mercer-Fraser building a new parking lot north of the existing lot in an area previously used as spill0ver parking for rental cars. Later this month, major work will begin on the main lot that is surrounded by the traffic circle.

“If you are flying out this summer, it may be a little chaotic,” Cody Roggatz, Humboldt County Director of Aviation, said at the June 26 meeting of the McKinleyville Municipal Advisory Committee. “My plea to the public is just catch a ride, just this summer.”

The entire parking lot is going to be not only reconfigured, but it’s going to be leveled out using material milled from last year’s runway improvement project. The new lot will become so flat that its slope will meet Americans with Disabilities Act slope requirements.

“We’re adding a ton of spots,” Roggatz said. “Our capacity is going to increase overall by about 40 percent.”

When the project is completed this fall, the lot will have approximately 469 parking spaces, compared to the existing 336 spaces.

Now, when people come home from a long flight, retrieve their baggage and head to the parking lot, they often find themselves waiting in line to pay their parking fees. That will end with the installation of automated booths.

When you drive in the parking lot, you’ll slide your credit car in a machine, which will also scan your license plate. When you leave, you slide your card in a machine, it reads your license plate, charges you and you are free to go. You can also speed up the process and use a machine at terminal’s baggage return area and pay before you even get to the parking lot. When you go to exit the lot, a machine will read your license plate and , being that you’ve paid, the gate will lift.

Roggatz described the new system as “much smoother, cleaner and modern.”

During construction, a portion of the existing lot will still be available for parking, There will also be a new, temporary parking area east of the rental car parking south of the terminal.

Roggatz said his department will soon be releasing a detailed press release with diagrams showing the temporary parking areas.

Why add Hooven Ranch to the title? We don’t call it the Indigenous Peoples land of the United States, or Gary’s house now mine

Now parking will be more expensive than flying. The green bad deal at work here.

I’m not sure how many are flying in, as Humboldt as an (air) tourist destination doesn’t seem to be doing well. But I do fly OUT of AVL several times a year, mostly going to tech conferences. So, I do end up flying back in, so to speak. And I use the lot when I’m gone. Having said that, I can’t say I’ve seen where the condition of the parking lot justifies $7MM, given all our other spending needs.

The parking lot is terrible, literally have to walk through the grass to get to the lower section. Needs at least a $2M upgrade and since its federal grant $ it will likely cost more than $10M

fed money has many strings attached.

What will the new rate for parking be per day? I guess about $14. after this boondoggle.

The parking lot is usual fairly well occupied and most flights I’ve been on to and from Arcata have been fairly full

The failed BOS needs to explain why it is so expensive to fly out of Humboldt. If i fly now its form SAC, Medford, SFO, Oakland, or San Jose. NOT here. Fuel and parking and hotel beat the price to fly form here. I know many people who do the same.

How much will we now charge to park per day long term, Cory?$?

Would have rather seen that money going towards improved bus service to the airport.

Where would I park my car securely in Arcata to catch that bus?

What about the Arcata Transit Center is a safe place to park safe after nightfall?

Have you been there at night? Have you seen the unhoused people sleeping all around the transit building? Not even safe during the day to leave your car there.

Say whaaat? ‘Never ‘ will probably cover your inquiry… a notoriously bad part of Arcata.

I’m not sure? Why do you have to park there?

#1, so I would not have to park in the crummy ACV parking lot.
#2, I would sometimes like to board the bus to somewhere else. Wouldn’t that be better for the environment?
There should a place North of Herrick to securely park and ride.

public transit will not work well. Too many hours to get around a weak system.
If you are comparing SFO and the bus system, that is mostly contract bus lines for hotels in the area. Hotel shuttle. Pretty efficient, but covid had a negative effect on it.

The HTA bus does stop there once an hour on weekends (less often on Saturday, not at all Sunday).

Has that lot ever been full? Why expand it? Wishful thinking?

Shockingly outdated. This will be a welcome upgrade. When I flew out of Arcata last Tuesday, the long-term lot was full. The automatic ticket machine was out of service. The attendant told me that when my return flight arrives at 9pm there will “probably” be someone on duty. If not I drop cash in a box.
